Across the Short Divide Exhibition

  • October 3, 2014
  • 6:00-10:00 PM

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Film and Free event

Broadway Gallery Space (1324 Broadway, Knoxville, TN, 37917)
Curated by Eleanor Aldrich

Itziar Barrio lives and works in New York.
Grant Billingsley lives and works in New York.
Rebecca Kaufman lives and works in Knoxville.
John Pearson lives and works in Los Angeles.
Yara Pina lives and works in Goiânia, Brazil.
Jered Sprecher lives and works in Knoxville.
Barbara Weissberger lives and works in Pittsburgh and New York.

This show is a collection of videos that have a material physicality, and images that have something of the look of the digital world despite being singular and physical. Creating the look of the digitized with its internal light source, transparent surface, and aligned vectors seems ill suited to painting, but Rebecca Kaufman’s work is a low-fi approximation of all three. Their printed digital images are frozen, angled, and flooded with unreal color- a reminder of the limits (and the beauty) of the screen. There are other quirks of the host materials that lend them self to the physical, like the confusion of offset grids that create the moiré patterns reconstructed by Grant Billingsley, and the mechanical linear printing—mimicked in Jered Sprecher’s work. The flat surface of Barbara Weissberger’s photos feel like a determined last move, to force the objects, images, and objects with images on their surfaces back into the realm of illusion.

The videos are textural and visceral despite their dematerialized state. In Yara Pina’s Sem título (Untitled) 2, 2011, the charcoal that is released by her actions envelopes her in its shadow while it slowly shades the lens of the camera, creating an atmosphere similar to the grainy prints of early photography. Itziar Barrio’s BAILALO, 2009, sets up a strip-tease scenario with a gyrating torso and eye-catching colors, which becomes complicated by the words slowly revealed by successive shirts; ‘You have to know your customer’. With each reveal, the viewer renegotiates their position to the subject (“You”, ”You have”, “You have to”), and materialization of that which seems guaranteed from the beginning is thwarted by mention of the transaction as such. John Pearson’s Daylight Landscape, 2001, is a reminder that the camera is not just an eye, but an eye contained inside a mechanical body, which we hear and sense through the jolt produced when it comes in contact with palm trees. The space is collapsed not just between our eye, Pearson’s, and the camera’s, but also between our bodies and their negotiation of the LA landscape.

Clarence Brown Theatre: The Miracle Worker

9343.jpg

Category: Theatre

Few stories are as timeless -- or reveal the courage and resilience of the human spirit -- as “The Miracle Worker,” which will run on the Clarence Brown Theatre mainstage October 2 – 19, 2014. The production tells the story of young Helen Keller, deaf and blind since infancy, who finds her way into the world of knowledge and understanding with the help of Annie Sullivan, her gifted tutor. In some of the most emotion-packed scenes ever presented on the stage, Helen overcomes rage and confusion to triumph over her physical disabilities.

The cast is comprised of guest professional actors, faculty, UT Theatre graduate actors and UT Theatre undergraduate actors.

The Clarence Brown Theatre will hold three Deaf Night at the Theatre performances during the 2014-2015 Season. The performances include: The Miracle Worker on Tuesday, October 14, A Christmas Carol on Tuesday, December 9 and A Midsummer Night’s Dream on Tuesday, March 3. The performances are supported in part by the Tennessee Arts Commission. For tickets, please call the CBT Box Office at 865-974-5161.

  • October 1, 2014 — November 30, 2014

Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event

The show is open to fine art photographers working in any photography medium, (alternative, traditional, and digital approaches) - we care about well-done art more than the specific medium, technique or format. Fine Art Photography refers to photographs that are created in accordance with the creative vision of the photographer as artist. Fine Art Photography stands in contrast to photojournalism, which provides a visual account for news events, and commercial photography, the primary focus of which is to advertise products or services. Juror - Colby McLemore, Professional Photographer

The show will hang at the Morristown Hamblen Library from October 1, 2014, until November 30, 2014. The “Awards Presentation and Meet The Juror” will take place on October 4, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., in the Periodicals Room Exhibit Area.

Erica Beck ‘04 and Mary Louise Sullivan ‘06 Alumni Exhibition

October 1-31, 2014
Reception for Last Friday Artwalk, October 31, 2014 6-8PM
Artist Statement (Erica Beck '04):
The artwork I am presenting in the gallery represents an exploration of my illustration style. It started with the name for my stationery line, Stag & Lucia. It is a nod to both my husband’s and my heritage as these words are rooted in German and Swedish culture. I knew I wanted to create an identity that was both uniquely mine and deeply personal. My dad and my grandmother both were amazing artists and I wanted to honor that legacy. I also strive to pay homage to the region in which I was born and raised - the Southeast. I love the South for its charm, easy elegance and wit - all things I hope to convey in my artwork.

Artist Statement (Mary Louise Sullivan '06)
“Works in Progress and Production”

“Every blank book contains the potential to be a living, breathing organism that changes every time it rests beneath a scratching pen, a record of the soul of the individual resulting from the intimate interaction between the mind, the pen, and the page. A book that is too precious, blank or printed, is a book that can be lost to a shelf; and a book on a shelf is one that can be forgotten.”

This collection of work represents an evolution in product design. Included are blank book prototypes from my MFA thesis show in May of this year as well as subsequent iterations and products. My decorative papers stem from a love of printing, mark making, and production and allow me to indulge in intricate handwork.

Knoxville Museum of Art: Latino Art Exhibit

Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event

The Knoxville Museum of Art presents the Latino Art Exhibit in the Corridor Gallery. The select works of nine local Hispanic artists will be featured including works from June Crowe, Susana Esrequis, Astrid Galindo, Angel Luna, Cecilia Stella Martin, Rosalina Tipton, Irene Torrealba, Loren Velazquez, and Luis Velazquez. The exhibit captures the diversity in styles of Hispanic artists residing in East Tennessee and of those who support the mission of LoLa Hora Latina.

Notes about three of the artists in the show:
Rosalina Tipton always tries to express beauty and spontaneity in her work even though her style borders on the abstract. She aims to have a connection with the real world and her personal life experiences. She primarily uses oils, mixed media on canvas, and wood and was influenced by the culture of her native Brazil.
Irene Torrealba, who was born and raised in Santiago, Chile, displays special interests in realism in water color and oil. She especially enjoys painting country landscapes that connect with her memories of her childhood, family, and travels.
For Susana Esrequis, painting is a time when her imagination and feelings come together and when she finds peace in genuine and simple things. Her works often depict pristine landscapes from both South America and North America.

Athens Area Council for the Arts: "Our Town"

  • September 25, 2014 — October 4, 2014

Winner of the 1938 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Thornton Wilder’s Our Town has been hailed as the greatest American play ever written. The story follows the small town of Grover’s Corners through three acts: “Daily Life,” “Love and Marriage,” and “Death and Eternity.” Narrated by a stage manager and performed with minimal props and sets, audiences follow the Webb and Gibbs families as their children fall in love, marry, and eventually—in one of the most famous scenes in American theatre—die.

Show dates are Thursday-Saturday, September 25-27 and October 2-4 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, September 28 at 2:00 pm in the Sue E. Trotter Black Box Theater at The Arts Center in Athens, Tennessee. More details TBA.
