Art Market Gallery: Works by Lil Clinard and Jennifer Lindsay

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Festivals, special events, Free event and Music

Recent works by watercolor painter Lil Clinard of Loudon, and beaded-jewelry artist Jennifer Lindsay of Knoxville will be on display during the month of March at the Art Market Gallery. An opening reception for the featured artists will be held during Downtown Knoxville’s monthly First Friday Art Walk beginning at 5:30 p.m. March 6, with complimentary refreshments and live music performed by The Accidentals.

Both featured artists can relate their current creative expression to beginning in childhood.

As a girl, Lil Clinard spent summers by the sea, and trips to big cities made a lasting impression on her. She loved to paint what she had experienced. After a rewarding career, albeit not in art, it was time to follow her heart full-time. Inspired by workshops with nationally recognized watercolor artists, she has since been honored in regional, state and national competitions. While Clinard experiments with different mediums and her subject matter varies, she is best known for her transparent watercolors of seascapes and cityscapes....back to those memories from her youth. Her paintings are in collections throughout the Southeast.

When she was young, Jennifer Lindsay made jewelry from anything her mother would give her ---from paper to yarn. She found a niche with beads and cord, and her first jewelry sales were simple macramé bracelets. Gradually, however, she realized these were too basic to communicate her vision, inspired as she was by everything from flowers in bloom to stars in the sky. She began to work with many sizes of seed beads, learning, through classes and books by jewelers, various techniques to fashion them into intricate wearable art. Her pieces now also incorporate semiprecious stones and Swarovsky crystals for dazzling accents.

Owned and operated by 62 professional regional artists, the Art Market Gallery, at 422 South Gay St., is a few doors from Mast General Store and next to Downtown Grill & Brewery. Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday; 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday; and 1 to 5 p.m., Sunday. The gallery is wheelchair accessible, and parking in the abutting garage and on the street is free on weekends and after 6 p.m. weekdays. Bliss Home is pleased to present the latest works by Knoxville artist, Stacey Fletcher, for March''s First Friday. Bliss Home, located at 29 Market Square, will host an opening reception on Friday, March 6th from 6pm to 9pm. Complimentary snacks will be provided and Stacey's art will be featured for the month of March.

Stacey Fletcher received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting and Drawing from The University of Tennessee in 2003, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Valdosta State University in 2000. She has exhibited nationally and internationally in many individual, group, and juried exhibitions. This includes being awarded the honor of participating in the 2005 Pienkow International Artist Workshop in Poland. Stacey has taught for The University of Tennessee since 2000 as a graduate assistant, an assistant professor, as well as through the personal and professional extended education program. She lives, paints, and teaches in Knoxville, TN.

As a cathartic painter, Stacey’s work expresses emotions and frustrations that would otherwise be hard to express verbally. They seem abstract at first glace to the viewer, but have some sense of childhood imagery disguised among the colorful layers. Her work is fresh with vibrant lively colors, with layered metaphors of herself and others contrasted with the chaotic approach of the energetic marks.

Fractured Memories: Living with Violence in México: Prints by Miguel Aragon
Thousands of people die in drug-related violence every year in México; using processes that are reductive in nature I am exploring what it means to see, live and cope with images of incomprehensible violence. By using metaphors and visual metonymies to tie together process and subject matter I explore the idea of perception, memory and transformation. My work is derived from a need to find meaning in these brutal events that repositions the corpse in our field of vision, reminding us that our physical existence is finite.

Arts & Culture Alliance: Four Exhibitions by SGC International

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Festivals, special events, Free event, Kids, family and Music

The Arts & Culture Alliance proudly announces four unique exhibitions by SGC International. In the main gallery, the 2015-2018 Southern Graphic Council International Member’s Traveling Exhibition features an array of 51 original prints, created by SGC International members from around the world. Juried by artist, distinguished professor, and 2015 SGCI Printmaker Emerita Award Recipient Ruth Weisberg, the work selected for the exhibit will travel though the United States for three years. Artists include Beauvais Lyons and Koichi Yamamoto, School of Art faculty at the University of Tennessee.

Knoxville Collects Yee-Haw will feature letterpress prints from Yee-Haw Industries collected by the people of Knoxville. The exhibition seeks to celebrate the legacy of Yee-Haw Industries and its significance for people living in East Tennessee. Organized by B.J. Alumbaugh, MFA student in Studio Art (printmaking) at the University of Tennessee, the exhibition will include text panels for each print with a short paragraph by the owner about why the work is of significance for them. Works will be on display in the Balcony gallery.

Approximate Exactitude: The Diagram and the Book will feature a selection of original artist books by fourteen artists in the display case. The books in this show celebrate, occasionally spoof, and often times elevate the significance of the diagram as an element of the book. The exhibition is curated by Sarah Smith, the Special Instructor/Manager of the Book Arts Workshop at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH.

Prints by UTK Faculty will present selected prints by University of Tennessee, School of Art faculty members Koichi Yamamoto, Althea Murphy Price, and Beauvais Lyons on the North Wall of the gallery. The three participating artists in this exhibit are also hosts of the 2015 Southern Graphics Council International Conference held March 18-21 in Knoxville.

The exhibitions will be on display at the Emporium Center, 100 S Gay Street, in downtown Knoxville from March 6-29, 2015. A public reception will take place on Friday, March 6, from 5:00-9:00 PM. Category: Exhibitions, visual art

The A1LabArts Gallery will open A Show of Hands, an exhibition of prints and photographs curated by Adam Finkelston and James Meara, on Friday, March 6 from 6 – 10 p.m.

A Show of Hands exhibition is a part of the Southern Graphics Council International SPHERE conference and will be open at The Center for Creative Minds through March 28. Finkelston and Meara, co-editors of The Hand Magazine, will be in attendance at the exhibition’s reception on Thursday, March 19 from 6 – 9 p.m. at The Center for Creative Minds.

Since April 2013, The Hand Magazine has published hundreds of images from some of the most interesting contemporary artists working in reproductionbased media. The Hand is dedicated to the promotion of handmade images that utilize techniques invented for and generally thought of as being mechanical in nature. In addition to exploring this paradox, The Hand seeks to unite the photographic and print communities and give a new audience to established practitioners of these arts. The Hand reaches out to established and emerging artists alike, in an effort to recognize the history of handmade reproduction as well as the future.
