Bijou Theatre: The Mountain Goats

After over a decade of recording, The Mountain Goats ' songwriting still retains the capacity to stun: John Darnielle's songs can be gracefully poetic, painfully visceral and warmly empathetic, all at once.

Jubilee Community Arts: Anna & Elizabeth

Category: Music

Ballads & Old-Time
Anna Roberts-Gevalt and Elizabeth LaPrelle have immersed themselves in the work of old masters, playing on porches and in kitchens, staying up all night to learn just one more song. Each used college to dive deep into history and archives, reading folklore and stories, listening to scratchy records of haunting voices, learning from relatives of long-gone greats. Their music has evolved—raw, sparse ballads, sweet lullabies, driving fiddle tunes and banjo songs, home music where less is more. Elizabeth’s remarkable deep mountain voice and Anna’s modern one, an uncanny blend, create a unique combination. Their show is a mix of ballads, oldtime dance tunes, stories and visual art. It’s a throwback, honoring the cultural and musical heritage from the hollows and old-time musicians gone but not forgotten.

The Black Lillies Free Concert and Album Release Party

  • October 2, 2015
  • 5:00PM

Category: Free event and Music

Throughout the band’s six-year history, The Black Lillies have spent far more time on the road than at home in Knoxville. Averaging over 200 shows per year, with appearances at festivals ranging from the nearby (Bonnaroo) to the far away (Stagecoach: California’s Country Music Festival) to the international (Cayamo: A Voyage at Sea), the band has charted on the Billboard Country Top 200, played the Grand Ole Opry more than any other independent act in the show’s history, and been praised by media outlets as diverse as Rolling Stone, the Wall Street Journal and Vanity Fair. Through it all, however, Knoxville has remained the place the band calls home. And now, in order to show appreciation to the friends, family and fans who have supported the band every step of the way, The Black Lillies will celebrate the release of their fourth studio album ‘Hard to Please’ by throwing a huge, free party and concert on Market Square.

Hailed as "buzzworthy, genre-mashing roots music" by Rolling Stone Country and praised everywhere from The Wall Street Journal to Entertainment Weekly, The Black Lillies' eclectic sound is reflected their raucous live show, which prompted NPR's Ann Powers to name them a "top pick" at SXSW 2014. It has also earned them festival slots from Bonnaroo to Stagecoach, as well as the honor of playing The Grand Ole Opry more than any other independent band in history.
'Hard To Please' follows the band's 2013 'Runaway Freeway Blues' album, which climbed the Billboard country charts, landed on more than a dozen "Best-Of" lists, and dominated Americana radio, spending a whopping three months in the Top 5.

The October 2 celebration will begin at 5 pm with sets by Dirty Guv’nahs spin-off Electric Darling and Rolling Stone Country “act to watch” Margo and the Pricetags. Admission is free, though ticketed VIP options will be announced in the coming days. For more on The Black Lillies, please visit theblacklillies.com.

October 2, starting at 5:00PM, on Knoxville's Market Square.

Knoxville Zoo: Art Gone Wild!

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Festivals, special events, Fundraisers and Science, nature

Knoxville Zoo will be hosting a special after-hours event featuring original art and craft created by the zoo’s animal “artists”. Art Gone Wild! is a special show and sale of original paintings and customized gift items at Knoxville Zoo.

Art Gone Wild! attendees can enjoy wine, beer and hors d’oeuvres while shopping for original works of art and craft created by the zoo’s animals as part of the zoo’s animal enrichment program. The offering includes paintings by Southern white rhinos, South African penguins, African elephants, zebras, gibbons, chimpanzees, Western lowland gorillas, baboons, African lions, Malayan and Bengal tigers, red pandas, a variety of reptiles, and some very clever birds including Einstein, the zoo’s famous Congo African grey parrot. Craft items decorated by the animals, including coasters, cups, tote and gift bags and hats, and original photography by Wendell Hackler will be available for purchase during the event.

All proceeds from Art Gone Wild! fund the zoo’s enrichment program, which is an integral part of the zoo’s animal husbandry practices that ensures the physical and psychological well-being of the animals in the zoo’s care. By incorporating interesting objects, scents and foods, as well as training and painting sessions into the daily activities the animals experience, zoo keepers make sure their charges are stimulated both mentally and physically. The zoo’s enrichment program contributes significantly to the overall health and happiness of the animals and also has the benefit of improving the success of breeding programs and adaptability to new situations.

Art Gone Wild! is for guests 18 years of age and older, and a photo ID will be required to enter the event. Tickets are $30 per person and are available online at www.knoxvillezoo.org, by phone at (865) 637-5331 and at the zoo’s ticket window during business hours. Art Market Gallery: Works by Millie Derrick and Marie Merritt

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Fine Crafts and Free event

Recent works by painter Marie Merritt of Rutledge and potter Millie Derrick of Sevierville will be on display at the Art Market Gallery. An opening reception for the featured artists will begin at 5:30 p.m., Oct. 2, during Downtown Knoxville’s monthly First Friday Art Walk, with complimentary refreshments and music performed by The Accidentals.

Marie Burchette Merritt draws inspiration from the rich history and heritage of her native east Tennessee and southern Appalachia and translates its beauty into stories told on canvas. Her award-winning oil paintings preserve historical characters and pastoral landscapes of vanishing rural farmlands. Keeping with tradition, the University of Tennessee graduate and sought-after instructor combines transparent and opaque paints in time-honored techniques reminiscent of the old masters, to set a mood of reflective observation.

Millie Derrick was born in the small Tennessee town of Church Hill and is an accomplished potter currently living in Sevierville, close to the Great Smoky Mountains. She hand builds functional and decorative clay pieces, each of which has a distinctive signature edging. Millie earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art from East Tennessee State University and has continued her education at Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts in Gatlinburg. She also conducts pottery workshops for students of all ages in her home studio.

Category: Kids, family and Theatre

Knoxville Children’s Theatre will present Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Jr., a musical stage version of the classic 1989 Walt Disney Studios film, specifically adapted for children and families. The play will be performed September 18 through October 4, Thursdays and Fridays at 7 PM; Saturdays at 1 PM and 5 PM; Sundays at 3 PM.

In a magical underwater kingdom, the beautiful young mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home - and her fins - behind and live in the world above. But first she'll have to defy her father King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula, and convince the handsome Prince Eric that she's the girl whose enchanting voice he's been seeking. Many of the favorite songs of the Walt Disney film are brilliantly recreated on stage, such as the Oscar-winning “Under The Sea,” “Part Of Your World,” and “She’s In Love.” The script is based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale and the Disney film , written and directed by John Musker and Ron Clements. The script is written by Doug Wright, with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman & Glenn Slater. The play is produced by special arrangement with Music Theatre International.

KCT will also host a series of "Under The Sea" tea parties to coincide with Saturday 1 PM and Sunday 3 PM performances of Disney's The Little Mermaid Jr. Performances with the tea-party option include September 19, 20, 26, 27; October 3 and 4, as interest and availability dictates. The $25 ticket price includes admission to the performance, as well as food, drinks, crafts and games, all with a special "Under The Sea" theme. Pre-registration is required by calling (865) 208-3677. All tea-party tickets must be pre-paid. Seating is limited.
