East Tennessee Historical Society: The Greatest Campaigner of Them All: Estes Kefauver's Personal Approach to Politics
Category: Free event, History, heritage and Lecture, panel
A Brown Bag Lecture with Theodore Brown, Jr.
Estes Kefauver was a tireless campaigner not only on behalf of his own political career, but also on behalf of the public interest. Ted Brown will explore the sources of Kefauver’s approach to politics, the motivations, behind his congressional investigations, and the methods that he used in taking progressive positions on controversial public-policy issues such as civil rights and civil liberties while consistently winning re-election despite strong, well-financed opposition. Mr. Brown is a senior lecturer in political science and an adjunct professor of law at the University of Tennessee. He has written several articles and contributed to several books about Senator Kefauver, the law, and Tennessee legal and political history. This is part II of a two-part series on Kefauver.
At the East Tennessee History Center, 601 S. Gay Street, Knoxville. For more information on the lecture, exhibitions, or museum hours, call 865-215-8824. http://www.easttnhistory.org/events/greatest-campaigner-them-all-estes-kefauvers-personal-approach-politics-brown-bag-lecture

Morristown Theatre Guild: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever
Category: Kids, family and Theatre
The Morristown Theatre Guild, the area’s longest running community theatre program, the holiday classic, “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” December 11-20th.
In this hilarious Christmas tale, a couple struggling to put on a church Christmas pageant is faced with casting the Herdman kids - probably the most inventively awful kids in history. They cheat. They steal. They’ll mess you up pretty good. You won't believe the mayhem - and the fun - when the Herdmans collide with the Christmas story head on!
The Guild is excited to bring in guest director, Nathan McGhee, to head this production. McGhee describes how eager he is about this production, “I’m very excited to be directing a show with this company. The passion and energy they have to put on good, community productions is just wonderful. They’ve made me feel like I was at home since day one! The script is a classic, but – of course – we’ll be pulling out some cool twists with the script. We’re definitely going to adapt it to make it more meaningful for the community of today. You’ll be rolling on the floor laughing, then you might just shed a tear or two!”
Performances will be held on December 11-20th.

6th Annual Knoxville Solar Tour
Category: Festivals, special events, Free event and Science, nature
Is it time to add solar on your home or business and save on energy costs? Come join us for the sixth annual solar tour and learn about the infinite benefits of solar energy. Knoxville is truly a solar city! The tour is completely free to all.
Be at the Transit Center at 10 am on October 31st to ride the bus that will tour four novel solar installations in the city. Knox County is to install more than 5 megawatts (MW) of solar photovoltaic systems on the rooftops of 11 schools plus the Central Building, and ground mount solar arrays at the Detention and Juvenile Justice Facilities and is expected to save $29 million in energy costs to the County.
Our first stop on the tour will be Three Rivers Market, which features solar photovoltaic panels on their south roof. Due to the energy that Three Rivers is saving with the installed solar panels, the carbon sequestration amount is the equivalent of saving 36.1 acres of U.S. forest land a year in addition to powering 10% of the store’s total electricity. Our second stop will visit the large solar installation on Andrew Johnson Highway. Our third stop will be Ijams Nature Center, which is installing solar panels to their visitor center. The final stop will be the Solar Zoo. The solar tour will be an interesting opportunity to learn about solar energy in and around Knoxville. Come join us to learn how practical and affordable solar energy can be!
If you have any questions regarding the tour please contact Steve at steve@tnsolarenergy.org.
Tour starts at Knoxville Transit Center, 301 Church Avenue.
Saturday October 31st, 2015 from 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM.
Birdhouse Gallery: Exhibition by Diana Roger
Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event
Diana Roger's mixed media/assemblage art work is on exhibit at the Bird-Feeder Gallery in October. Please join us for the opening reception this coming Friday, October 9th from 6-9 at the Birdhouse 800 N. Fourth St. in the Fourth & Gill neighborhood.
My recent work is mixed media / assemblage created using a combination of traditional art materials and found objects from both the natural world and my urban surroundings. In the past I've made work that was, more often than not, expressive and very colorful but, with these newer pieces, I've made a concerted effort to strip down my usual style and create a subtler, more minimalist aesthetic. I don't have a particular theme or message in mind when I create but I have been making more of an effort, recently, to simply find things that are visually interesting and stimulating within my immediate surroundings. Because of this the work feels personal but it is also my attempt to communicate with other individuals who are also attempting to find beauty and artistic satisfaction in their everyday lives.
Please check the Birdhouse Community Center schedule of events for open hours at birdhouseknoxville.com. or call Gerry Moll at 480-239-0506 to make a special viewing appointment.
