Tennessee Theatre Association's 2015 Conference
Category: Classes, workshops and Theatre
This year, Tennessee’s state-wide theatre organization will hold its annual conference at the Clayton Center for the Arts in Maryville. The Tennessee Theatre Association, founded in 1968, provides hundreds of opportunities for theatre artists and theatre lovers to see high school and community theatre productions, participate in workshops, attend master classes, network, and socialize. Our guest artist this year is Cherry Jones, a five-time Tony Award nominee (most recently in 2014's revival of The Glass Menagerie). Ms. Jones has won two Tony awards (Best Actress for The Heiress and Doubt), three Drama Desk awards and an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role as President Taylor on Fox's hit television action drama 24. She was recently inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame. For more information about the conference, please visit the website at www.tennesseetheatreassociation.weebly.com.
East Tennessee Preservation Conference
Category: Classes, workshops, Festivals, special events and History, heritage
Knox Heritage and the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance are proud to partner once again with many businesses, organizations and individuals to bring the annual East Tennessee Preservation Conference to our region October 22-24. This popular event emphasizes finding effective solutions for securing the future of our historic places while capitalizing on our cultural heritage. Participants include preservation professionals, architects, planners, tourism professionals, government and community leaders, economic developers, real estate professionals and others who have found that advanced knowledge of historic preservation principles and practices can be a valuable asset. It is a great event for both learning and networking.
To celebrate its 7th year, the conference is being held in downtown Knoxville. Primary sessions will be held at the East Tennessee History Center and the conference will include an opening reception and hands-on workshops at Historic Westwood. The Tennessee Historical Commission will be providing specialized training for Certified Local Government and Historic Zoning Commission members and AIA continuing education credits will once again be offered. A variety of walking tours to sites in downtown Knoxville and the introduction of the first East Tennessee Preservation Gala will further enhance the experience. Space is limited, so please register early to attend by visiting www.knoxheritage.org/etpa or by calling 865-523-8008. Be sure to invite your colleagues to the 2015 East Tennessee Preservation Conference in Knoxville!
This year’s keynote speaker and special guest will be Donovan Rypkema, recognized as an industry leader in the economics of preserving historic structures. He is principal of PlaceEconomics, a Washington, DC-based real estate and economic development consulting firm which specializes in services to public and nonprofit-sector clients who are dealing with downtown and neighborhood commercial district revitalization and the reuse of historic structures. In 2012, the National Trust for Historic Preservation awarded him the Louise du Pont Crowninshield Award, the organization’s highest honor, for his work in the preservation field. Mr. Rypkema's presentation in Knoxville is being sponsored by East Tennessee Quality Growth, Inc., a key collaborative partner of Knox Heritage and the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance.

Birdhouse Gallery: Exhibition by Diana Roger
Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event
Diana Roger's mixed media/assemblage art work is on exhibit at the Bird-Feeder Gallery in October. Please join us for the opening reception this coming Friday, October 9th from 6-9 at the Birdhouse 800 N. Fourth St. in the Fourth & Gill neighborhood.
My recent work is mixed media / assemblage created using a combination of traditional art materials and found objects from both the natural world and my urban surroundings. In the past I've made work that was, more often than not, expressive and very colorful but, with these newer pieces, I've made a concerted effort to strip down my usual style and create a subtler, more minimalist aesthetic. I don't have a particular theme or message in mind when I create but I have been making more of an effort, recently, to simply find things that are visually interesting and stimulating within my immediate surroundings. Because of this the work feels personal but it is also my attempt to communicate with other individuals who are also attempting to find beauty and artistic satisfaction in their everyday lives.
Please check the Birdhouse Community Center schedule of events for open hours at birdhouseknoxville.com. or call Gerry Moll at 480-239-0506 to make a special viewing appointment.
