Tennessee Wesleyan College Theatre Program: A Night of Blacker Darkness

  • October 23, 2015 — October 31, 2015

Category: Kids, family and Theatre

The World Premiere!

A Gothic Vampire Farce by Dan Wells, adapted for the stage by Allison Hill and Dan Wells. Based on the novel by the same name by New York Times Bestselling, and Hugo Award-winning, author Dan Wells. Set in Regency England, the story follows the plight of swindler Fredrick as he attempts financial fraud while being pursued by a coven of vampires convinced he’s come to lead them. With a cast of characters that includes Mary Shelley, John Keats, and a world of slamming doors and coffins, this play is the perfect mix of horror and comedy. Perfect Halloween-time fare! We are excited that Dan Wells will be able to join us on campus for some performances, and may be available for talks at local and campus libraries!

October 23-24 and 30-31 at 7:30 PM and October 25 at 3:00 PM. Tickets: $8 for adults, $5 seniors/students/children, free for TWC students/staff/faculty. At the Townsend Auditorium in Athens, TN. http://www.twctheatre.com/

Ms. Jones has won two Tony awards (Best Actress for The Heiress and Doubt), three Drama Desk awards and an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role as President Taylor on Fox's hit television action drama 24. Birdhouse Gallery: Exhibition by Diana Roger

  • October 9, 2015 — October 31, 2015

Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event

Diana Roger's mixed media/assemblage art work is on exhibit at the Bird-Feeder Gallery in October. Please join us for the opening reception this coming Friday, October 9th from 6-9 at the Birdhouse 800 N. Fourth St. in the Fourth & Gill neighborhood.

My recent work is mixed media / assemblage created using a combination of traditional art materials and found objects from both the natural world and my urban surroundings. In the past I've made work that was, more often than not, expressive and very colorful but, with these newer pieces, I've made a concerted effort to strip down my usual style and create a subtler, more minimalist aesthetic. I don't have a particular theme or message in mind when I create but I have been making more of an effort, recently, to simply find things that are visually interesting and stimulating within my immediate surroundings. Because of this the work feels personal but it is also my attempt to communicate with other individuals who are also attempting to find beauty and artistic satisfaction in their everyday lives.

Please check the Birdhouse Community Center schedule of events for open hours at birdhouseknoxville.com. or call Gerry Moll at 480-239-0506 to make a special viewing appointment.

Bliss Home First Friday Presents Local Nostalgia by Christi Shields

  • October 2, 2015 — November 1, 2015

Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event

Bliss Home is pleased to present Local Nostalgia, by Knoxville artist Christi Shields, for October's First Friday. Bliss Home, located at 29 Market Square, will host an opening reception on Friday, October 2nd from 6pm to 9pm. Complimentary treats from Wild Love Bakehouse will be provided and Christi's art will be featured for the month of October.

Growing up in the Knoxville area, Christi takes great pride in how far our “scruffy little city” has come. Knoxville is growing by leaps and bounds through the interest and support of local businesses, farmers, products, music and art. Observing the movement to support “local” gives Christi personal justification for her inspiration to create work through a sentimental lens. Sometimes there is just no need to look further than your own “back yard.”

Local Nostalgia is a collection of work that highlights a few nostalgic moments reflecting Christi's own experiences. It is intended to evoke a sense of nostalgia or feeling in the viewer through the use of local themes, bold complimentary colors and expressive brush strokes. Christi uses a very action oriented process with mixed media on wood support to create interest, depth, texture, movement and vintage flair.
