Bliss Home: Works by Hannah C. Holder

  • May 6, 2016 — May 29, 2016

Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event

Opening Reception: Friday, May 6th, 2016 6pm to 9pm. Complimentary treats from Wild Love Bakehouse will be provided

Bliss Home is pleased to be a presenter for the Biscuit Art Exhibition! This is a premier event of the International Biscuit Festival which will be celebrated with new biscuit-themed art by Knoxville freelance artist and calligrapher, Hannah Holder!

Hannah C. Holder graduated from Wheaton College (IL) with a degree in fine art in 2002. Though her focus at that time was drawing, during her senior year she had the privilege to study briefly with internationally-known calligrapher Timothy Botts, an opportunity pivotal in the direction she took following college. Since 2003, she has completed a wide array of calligraphy and lettering work around East Tennessee and beyond—quotations on the walls of a college library, verses and poetry on the walls of various homes, hundreds of wedding invitation addresses, three wedding invitation designs, baptismal certificates, church membership statements and creeds, mission statements for two local financial institutions, four awards for distinguished alumni of the University of Tennessee’s Department of Accounting and Information Services, birthday and thank you cards, pieces hanging in doctors’ offices and nurseries, a marriage certificate, poetry in the style of an illuminated medieval manuscript, and personalized labels for a violin maker. Hannah currently has a large piece of calligraphy touring the country with a Christians in the Visual Arts (CIVA) exhibit, Scribes of Hope II, now in its third year on the road. She has also submitted work three years to The Graceful Envelope Contest, sponsored by the Washington Calligraphers’ Guild and the National Association of Letter Carriers in D.C., where she placed in the top ten contestants the first two years and was the 2015 Best in Show.

Though calligraphy continues to be her primary focus and she has several murals to her name, Hannah has also created and exhibited drawings (graphite or pen and ink) and watercolors—en plein air work of the Smokies and downtown Knoxville with the Tuesday Painters, architectural details of Europe and landscapes in Maine, historic sites in Knoxville, commissioned renderings of clients’ first or favorite homes, a rooster for a poultry show website, playful M. C. Escher-like tessellations, and… BISCUITS! Last year she was a runner-up in the International Biscuit Festival Art Show, leading to this year’s adventure of putting on a biscuit-themed solo show at Bliss Home in Market Square. As a calligrapher and artist with a bent toward realism and detail, it was an exciting yet daunting prospect for Hannah to create more than a dozen pieces of art on the theme of biscuits. For Hannah's May exhibit, she had the opportunity to use random hoarded supplies she has been wondering how to use for years and a Dictionary of World Languages to turn baking into art while memorializing a building that once housed a beloved flour factory (now lofts). Knoxville Children's Theatre: Snow White and Rose Red

  • May 6, 2016 — May 22, 2016

Category: Kids, family and Theatre

A comic parody of all things 1980’s, specifically created for children and families. The play will be performed Thursdays and Fridays at 7 PM; Saturdays at 1 PM and 5 PM; Sundays at 3 PM.

The play’s subtitle is “Prince Ferris’ Day Off,” because the play is a witty and clever mashup of the Grimm fairy tales of Snow White and Rose Red, as well as the iconic 1980’s movie “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” The show parodies 80’s movies, music and fashion, while also retaining the classic elements of the fairy tale: a magic mirror, a jealous witch, rescuing dwarves, and a handsome prince. Younger fans will be thrilled with the comic mystery surrounding Snow White, while older audience members who survived the 80’s will find much of the show humorously familiar.

Prince Ferris decides to ditch throne duty and attend the local fair with his pal Cameron. There, they meet up with Snow White, whose mother has forgotten her 16th birthday. Meanwhile, Rose Red has met a magical bear named Teddy Ruxpin, who is in search of a strangely inept witch. To find her, it will take Snow White’s dotty grandmother, two local beauticians, four misfit dwarves, and an airhead king! It’s a totally tubular tale, dude!

STOMP: Festival of Lost Music

  • May 5, 2016 — May 8, 2016

Category: Festivals, special events, Film, Free event, History, heritage and Music

The Knoxville Stomp, May 5-8, 2016, is a live celebration of recordings made by local and regional artists in the summer of 1929 and spring of 1930, when the Chicago-based Brunswick record company came to Knoxville. They installed a studio in the St. James Hotel, which stood at the north end of Market Square, near where the TVA Towers stand today. Those sessions, many of which have been lost for years, are being released this spring in a boxed set called Knox County Stomp: The Knoxville Sessions 1929-1930 by the prestigious German label Bear Family Records. The Knoxville Stomp will be one-of-a-kind weekend, bringing a diverse array of musicians, writers, scholars and collectors together!

The Knoxville Sessions produced 101 commercially released tracks, featuring both African-American and white artists in a range of genres – gospel, string bands, blues, jazz. Collectively, they provide a panoramic view of Southern Appalachian music and culture on the cusp of the Great Depression.

The Knoxville Stomp festival will feature live performances of many of the historic tracks, along with other music from the era, panel discussions, film screenings, a 78rpm record collector show, and more. The Stomp will take place in venues throughout downtown Knoxville, including Market Square, the Bijou Theatre, the East Tennessee History Center and Boyd’s Jig and Reel among others. Most Stomp events will be free and open to the public, with tickets for a select few events going on sale February 25 at www.knoxstomp.com.
