The Muse Knoxville: Planetarium Presentations
Category: Kids, family, Lecture, panel and Science, nature
The Muse Knoxville will host two special guest Planetarium presentations called, ‘Decoding the Stars: Spirituals and the Underground Railroad‘ on Thursday, May 19th at 1:30pm and 4:30pm. These programs, provided by The Center for Creative Partnerships (CCP), a South Carolina non-profit organization, will serve as a rehearsal for a presentation they will give at the International Planetarium Society 2016 Conference at the Copernicus Center in Warsaw, Poland later in June. The presentation details how coded language was used in Civil War era spirituals to guide escaped slaves to freedom. The most famous example of these, also called map songs, is “Follow the Drinking Gourd” – drinking gourd being a symbol or code for the Big Dipper. Two stars on the bowl of the Big Dipper always point to the North Star, Polaris. The presentation will be given by Ellen N. Zisholtz, CCP President; former Director/Curator of the I.P. Stanback Museum and Planetarium; winner of the 2015 National Civil Rights/Social Justice Award; and a member of the Board of Trustees for Penn Center and Dr. Elizabeth Mayo Charlton, former Stanback Planetarium Manager and currently teaching Astronomy at Oxford University Department of Continuing Education, Oxford, England.
Decoding the Stars: the Spirituals and the Underground Railroad has been selected for this international conference because it is a unique example of combining the humanities basis of an exhibition with science curricula, and it has significance in future learning opportunities for “non astronomy education under the dome.” The Spirituals will be sung live by Dr. Cassandra Sligh Conway, who has several recordings and is the Coordinator of the Rehabilitation Counseling Program at SC State University and Gloria I. Lerner, Co-President of CCP; consulting producer, Diversity and Inclusion Custom Content, Forbes Media Group; and a classically trained opera singer, formerly with the Metropolitan Opera Studio and the Dallas Civic Opera. Decoding the Stars: the Spirituals and the Underground Railroad will be offered FREE with regular admission to the museum with ticketing available on a first come basis beginning 9 AM on May 19th. Please visit www.themuseknoxville.org for general information.

Farragut Arts Council: Works by Joe Trout
Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event
The Town of Farragut Arts Council presents watercolor artist Joe Trout as the featured artist for May and June. Located at the Farragut Town Hall, the exhibit highlights Trout's paintings of nature and wildlife. An East Tennessee native and Lenoir City resident, Trout has been creating watercolor paintings for more than 40 years. His work masterfully depicts the incredible beauty of the area's landscapes - specifically the Great Smoky Mountains National Park - including its abundant wildflowers, lush greenery, gentle streams and tumbling waterfalls. Many of his watercolors are also inspired by the quiet beaches and low country of South Carolina and North Carolina's Outer Banks. Trout has participated in numerous one-man art shows, and his work is housed in collectors' homes in several states and countries.
Each month, the work of an artist or group of artists is featured in specially designed cases on the second floor of the rotunda in the Farragut Town Hall. For more information about this exhibit or to access a Featured Artist of the Month application, please contact Lauren Cox at lcox@townoffarragut.org or 966-7057 or visit www.townoffarragut.org/artsandculture. The Farragut Town Hall is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located at 11408 Municipal Center Drive directly across from the Farragut Branch Post Office.
