Fountain City Art Center: Fountain City Art Guild Spring Show and Sale

The Fountain Cty Art Center is proud to host the annual "Fountain City Art Guild's Spring Show and Sale". The
Guild now juries in both 2-D and 3-D artists. In addition to the Guild show, the Art Center is exhibiting a vibrant watercolor show with works by the students of Mary Baumgartner. The student show bears the same name as Mary's watercolor classes: "The Wonderful World of Watercolor."
The reception for both exhibits will be held from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, May 20. Everyone is invited; no admission is charged. Light refreshments will be served.

Oak Ridge Academy of Dance "40th Anniversary Celebration"

The Oak Ridge Academy of Dance Evening Extravaganza entitled “Let’s Celebrate!” will be presented at the Knoxville Civic Auditorium on Friday, May 20, 2016 at 7:00pm. The performance is the 40th Anniversary Performance for the Academy. It is a varied dance production which encompasses all forms of dance; Classical Ballet and Pointe, Jazz, Lyrical, Tap and HipHop. The Evening is filled with exciting and moving dances. Dancers in this performance range in age from 10 years old to 70 years old. These dancers are joined in the performance by the Contemporary Dance Ensemble Nationals Team as guest artists. Their advanced dance abilities will amaze and delight the audience. The production consists of two full length acts with an intermission in between.

The performers range in age form 3 year olds to 10 year olds. The adorable antics of the 3 year olds have the audience at the edge of their seats with their carefree frolics. Guest Artists in this performance are members of the Contemporary Dance Ensemble Nationals Team. Their advanced dance abilities will amaze and enchant the audience. The production consists of two full length acts with an intermission in between.
Contemporary Dance Ensemble Spring Concert Saturday, May 21, 2016 @ 7:00pm The Contemporary Dance Ensemble will present their 40th annual Spring Concert this season on Saturday, May 21, 2016 7:00pm at the Knoxville Civic Auditorium. The performance is the 40th Anniversary Performance. The Ensemble is a non-profit dance organization dedicated to the performance and preservation of the art of dance. All Dance Ensemble members are advanced dance students who range in age from 10 years through college age. The Ensemble highlights the performance with solos from their graduating seniors. This year’s performance is a collage of different modes and emotions. The evening swirls with a mixture of oldies but goodies in celebration of their 40 years and, of course, the newest in contemporary dance styles are showcased. The production consists of two full length acts with an intermission in between.

Clarence Brown Theatre: Annual Gala

Illinois native and University of Tennessee alumna, Paula Pell, will be awarded the CBT Artistic Achievement Award at the Clarence Brown Theatre’s annual Gala to be held May 20, 2016 from 7:00-11:00 pm at Jackson Terminal, 205 W. Jackson Avenue in Knoxville, TN.
Famed behind-the-scenes comedy queen, Pell was a writer for Saturday Night Live for more than 20 years. During her time at SNL, she helped create memorable characters such as the “Spartan Cheerleaders,” and later the middle school music teachers “The Culps,” in addition to the ever-popular “Debbie Downer.” Currently, Pell and fellow UT alum/SNL writer James Anderson star in their own web series, Hudson Valley Ballers, in which they play ex-SNL writers running a bed and breakfast in New York’s Hudson Valley.
The CBT Gala benefits the Clarence Brown Theatre Artists Endowment, which helps bring professional guest artists from across the United States to the CBT to engage and teach undergraduate and graduate students, all while creating the world-class, professional theatre experiences Greater Knoxville audiences have come to expect.
Modeled after Truman Capote’s Black & White Ball, 2016 CBT Gala attendees can expect an elegant evening with lots of laughs from the honoree herself. Alive After Five is a unique live music series that takes place in the smoke-free, casually elegant setting of the Ann and Steve Bailey Hall in the Knoxville Museum of Art. There is a live band on stage, seating at tables, two cash bars, food from area restaurants, free freshly popped popcorn, and free parking. Audience members can enjoy listening to music, dancing, and browsing the museum’s art galleries. Admission is $10 for general and $5 for museum members and college students with ID. American Museum of Science and Energy: Mark Henderson

On Friday, May 20 at 6 pm, the American Museum of Science and Energy will host Man’s Quest for Fusion and the Role of ITER by Mark Henderson, member of the Technical Staff, ITER Organization, St. Paul-les-Durrance, France.
Henderson will provide a first-hand account of the wide scope of technologies involved in operation of the ITER tokamak, as well as the current status of design, development and construction of the experimental fusion facility. ITER is the only fusion device in the world that is presently being designed to achieve a burning plasma of hydrogen isotopes.
Mark Henderson acquired a PhD in Plasma Physics in 1991 with his thesis on the design, construction and initial operation of the Compact Auburn Torsatron. He performed a Post Doctorate at the Center for Research in Plasma Physics (CRPP) in Lausanne, Switzerland participating in the design, construction and operation of the microwave heating system on the variable configuration tokamak (TCV) at the Swiss Plasma Center. Mark became a permanent scientist at TCV working on the microwave system and associated experiments. In 2004, he proposed an alternative design for the ITER microwave launching antenna, which was accepted. In 2008, he left CRPP for ITER to be in charge of the development of microwave heating system

The U.S. Department of Energy’s American Museum of Science and Energy is located at 300 S. Tulane Ave. in Oak Ridge and is open Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. AMSE tells the story of the World War II Manhattan Project that created the Secret City of Oak Ridge and the science that followed. AMSE features interactive exhibits on science, fossil fuels, and alternative energy sources, and visitors participate in live demonstrations. Westminster Presbyterian Church's Schilling Gallery: Mixed media paintings by Donna Conliff and pottery and paintings by Anne Dally.
Donna Conliffe, a mixed media artist, uses layers of collage and paint, image transfers, found objects, metal, and words to create themes of growth and change. Anne Dally's ceramic work and paintings reflect her interest in outer space and the natural environment.

Tennessee Watercolor Society: 35th Juried Exhibition

The Tennessee Watercolor Society (TnWS), founded in 1972, has represented the finest artists in the state for 44 years and hosts yearly juried exhibitions and biennial exhibitions. The biennial exhibition showcases 55 watermedia paintings chosen from nearly 200 entries. Juror John T. Salminen is a signature member of numerous art societies such as the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, and the Transparent Watercolor Society of America and recipient of more than 220 national and international awards. Prizes for the TnWS Biennial Exhibition total $10,000. A juried collection of 30 paintings from the exhibition will later travel across Tennessee into January 2017 to six locations for public and visual arts outreach, including Memphis, Humboldt, Columbia, Chattanooga, Elizabethton, and Clarksville.
