Kay List: Beginner Oil Painting Classes

  • April 20, 2017 — October 26, 2017

Category: Classes, workshops and Exhibitions, visual art

Instructor Kay List has found that although there are many fun art classes available, and they are certainly worth the enjoyment they bring to the participants, some budding artists are more serious about learning to paint and desire a more comprehensive class. Serious is also FUN! Kay’s "Beginning Drawing and Painting" class is designed just for you. For adults and High School students. The goal of the class is to bring the student to the point where he/she has enough beginning skills to continue working and practicing thereby improving their skills over time. Maximum class size is 6 students. $150 for six 2-hour classes.

East Tennessee History Center: Brown Bag Lecture by Don Byerly

Category: Free event, History, heritage and Lecture, panel

A Knoxville Heritage: Tennessee Marble

Few industries have had as historic and enduring effect on architecture across our nation as the marble industry of East Tennessee. Tennessee Marble, though not as steeped in antiquity as many European stones, has been quarried continuously in East Tennessee for lime and dimension stone since colonial times. Because it has national and international identity and the requisite attributes, Tennessee Marble is being nominated for recognition as a “Global Heritage Stone Resource.” Tennessee Marble continues to be popular with architects and builders for its structural and decorative qualities and with sculptors for its artistic inspiration. Don Byerly is professor emeritus of geology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, a founding member of Tennessee Earth Science Teachers, and the recipient of several awards.

The program is free and open to the public. Guests are invited to bring a “Brown Bag” lunch and enjoy the lecture. Soft drinks will be available.

East Tennessee Historical Society, 601 S. Gay Street, Knoxville, TN 37902. Museum hours: M-F 9-4, Sa 10-4, Su 1-5. Information: 865-215-8824, www.easttnhistory.org

The Public Cinema: David Lynch: The Art Life

  • April 20, 2017
  • 8 PM

Category: Film and Free event

Directed by Jon Nguyen

"Extravagantly surreal as the products of his imagination may be, they are deeply rooted in personal history and philosophy -- and it's this connection that Jon Nguyen's disarmingly off-kilter documentary probes to rewarding effect." -- Variety

David Lynch: The Art Life looks at Lynch's art, music, and early films, shining a light into the dark corners of his unique world and giving audiences a better understanding of the man and the artist. As he says, "I think every time you do something, like a painting or whatever, you go with ideas, and sometimes the past can conjure those ideas and color them. Even if they're new ideas, the past colors them."

We're invited in and given private views from Lynch's compound and painting studio in the hills high above Hollywood, as he tells personal stories that unfold like scenes from his films. Strange characters come into focus only to fade again into the past, all leaving an indelible mark.
