Theatre Knoxville Downtown: Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure
Category: Theatre
By Steven Dietz, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and William Gillette
Directed by Patrick McCray
Winner of the 2007 Edgar Award for Best Mystery Play
The world's greatest detective has seemingly reached the end of his remarkable career when a case presents itself that is too tempting to ignore: The King of Bohemia is about to be blackmailed by a notorious photograph, and the woman at the heart of this crime is the famous opera singer, Irene Adler. With his trusted companion, Doctor Watson, at his side, Sherlock Holmes pursues first the case, and then the affections of Miss Adler—and in doing so, marches right into the lair of his longtime adversary, that malevolent genius of crime: Professor Moriarty.
In this spirited, fast-moving and thoroughly theatrical adaptation, Steven Dietz presents Holmes at the height of his powers—surrounded by all the elements that fans of his exploits have come to expect: danger, intrigue, wit, humor and surprise. "The game is afoot, Watson—and it is a dangerous one!"

Museum of Appalachia: Sheep Shearing Days
Category: Festivals, special events and History, heritage
April 21 & 28, 10 AM - 2 PM
Students and families are invited to join us as we trim the winter’s growth of heavy wool from our flock of sheep. This day of hands-on activities will include demonstrations of carding, spinning, weaving, and other ways that pioneers used wool.
In pioneer Appalachia, farmers sheared their sheep each spring for wool to spin into yarn or fill quilts. The Museum of Appalachia, a Smithsonian Affiliate Museum, will renew this annual ritual each Spring, trimming the winter’s growth of heavy wool from its flock of sheep. The wooly animals are trimmed by Kentucky native John Cooper, who explains the process to onlookers and demonstrates the use of vintage hand-cranked shears, offering children the hands-on experience that will last a lifetime.
Spinning, weaving, stitching, and quilting demonstrators show how wool was used to make yarn, thread, fabric, and quilt batting in the days before ready-made clothing and superstores. Their demonstrations fulfill the Museum’s mission to preserve the Appalachian culture, educating children on their ancestors' heritage. School groups, home-schooled students, and families are welcome.
Museum of Appalachia, 2819 Andersonville Hwy., Clinton, TN 37716 (16 miles north of Knoxville at I-75, exit 122, then one mile east). Open every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas. Information: 865-494-7680, www.museumofappalachia.org
