nnSF19 is happening from June 10-24, 2019 in Knoxville, TN. Although there are countless summer festival opportunities, nnSF offers something rare and special. There are countless opportunities to perform, collaborate, and create at our festival, and our nnSF fellows walk away with excellent video, audio, and photo documentation! We know that choosing a summer festival is a big decision, and we are committed to providing an exceptional musical experience each summer.

In case it's been a while since you've checked out all the festival has to offer, we want to share up-to-date info our about our festival: nnSF19 features full-time, faculty-led workshops in performance, composition, and music technology lasting the duration of the festival. The Performance Workshop provides fellows extensive interaction with the faculty, guest composers, and visiting artists, as well as opportunities for professional level performances.

The WordPlayers presents a Staged Reading of Lady Windermere’s Fan, a comedy by Oscar Wilde, on Monday, June 10 at 7:00 PM in the Square Room, 4 Market Square, Knoxville. Oscar Wilde’s brilliant, sometimes melodramatic; comedy of manners is alternately hilarious, thought-provoking, and heart-wrenching. Wilde's subtitle is “A Play About a Good Woman.” But how did Wilde’s Victorian society define “good”? Which woman in the play is actually good? The show reminds us that sacrifice and compassion, the true hallmarks of goodness, rarely follow the conventions of the day.

The Technical Society of Knoxville will meet on June 10, 2019 at the Crowne Plaza in downtown Knoxville.

The speaker will be Jim D. Froula, Executive-Director Emeritus, TauBetaPi (a national honor society with headquarters in Knoxville). He will describe his “Adventure on the Colorado River” in 2007. Such trips are something few of us can take but all of us can learn from and appreciate. Jim has had a varied careen and varied interests and his perspective on his Colorado River trip will be unique. He is a mechanical engineer who has worked for the IBM Corporation and the Y-12 nuclear plant. He served in the United States Army and was awarded the bronze star and the army commendation medal. He finished climbing all the Colorado Fourteeners in 1986 and hiking all the trails in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 2018. He has climbed on Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and Cotopaxi and Chimborazo in Ecuador and has summited Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens (obviously not on the day it blew up), and Mount Hood. He swims in senior olympic events and lives in Farragut.

Technical Society of Knoxville meetings are held at Crowne Plaza Hotel, 401 W Summit Hill Drive and open to the public. Anyone interested in the meeting topic is welcome. Members and guests begin arriving around 11:30 AM and go through the buffet line. Cost is $13 per person payable in cash or by check in the meeting room to the designated collector. Cost without lunch is $7. A token for free parking in the hotel garage is included. Meetings are called to order at 11:55 and adjourned at 1:00 PM. Visitors are welcome. Knoxville - Our Wings of Wonder Butterfly Exhibit has been installed throughout the Gardens. Twenty-five large scale butterflies decorated by area artists will be on display until September 8 (when they will be auctioned off to the public). Come enjoy their whimsical beauty!

This is the second year of this great collaboration of artists and the UT Gardens whereby the showcased art is auctioned to benefit the Gardens. This year's theme of butterflies hopes to showcase the importance of pollinators to our ecosystems and is in conjunction with pollinator research being conducted at the UT Gardens and elsewhere around the world.

"I am a chromesthete which means I see a vast array of real colors in my mind when I listen to music. I like to think of it as my own personal light show. My goal for each portrait is to let you glimpse music and musicians the way I do. The show is too beautiful not to share. There is a kinship between color and music – both can say what words can not. My 10+ years as a journalist and graphic artist left me with a great understanding of design principles as they relate to color. I began painting for others in 2017 as an outlet to share all the mesmerizing colors I see as I listen to music. While I can remember the lyrics to almost any song I’ve ever heard, I am most fascinated by the people who pen them. I describe my style as painting in shadowed hues. My musician portraits are formed by breaking down each artist into pieces of colored shadows and highlights. They come together like puzzle pieces on canvas. My color palettes vary for each artist depending on what I see as I listen to their music. I’m also greatly influenced by the time in their careers I chose to depict them."

"I’m 45, live in Corryton, Tn. Married, with 4 kids. I’m originally from NC, have lived in East TN for about 20 years. US Army Veteran. I’ve been a Mechanic most of my life, And Have Always Loved any kind of Art! I mostly weld car parts together to create my art pieces, but will sometimes incorporate metal from other objects such as Washing machines and Clothes dryers. I’m not afraid to venture outside of my box, with new forms of art. I can hardly wait to see what comes up next!"

Recent works by local artist Pamela Salyer will be on display throughout the month of June at Post Modern Spirits in downtown Knoxville. An opening reception will be held on Friday, June 7th from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m., during Downtown Knoxville’s monthly First Friday Art Walk.

The show will feature a new series of mixed-media pieces, focused on trees and their settings. “The infinite variances in color, texture and pattern of trees fascinate me—how they relate to and echo the patterns of the earth, and even our own skin. I attempt to interpret and convey the relationship between these elements through my collages, with trees and their surroundings as the main subject. I build each collage with acrylic paint, gels, and paper, layer by layer, creating new ways to consider the textures and colors of the trees that surround us.”

This diverse group of artists have worked together and/or been friends for many years, and each artist has a distinct style and approach to their work. The component that ties them all together is a shared vision of the beauty they see in the world, the environment, the resources around us, and the unique ways of creating a 2-D or 3-D form. They convey raw emotion in each stroke of the pen or brush, the curvature of the clay, and the image peeping through the lens of the camera. Creative Storm features a talented group of artists letting the viewer have insight into their dreams and imagination. The exhibition artists include:

Longtime Knoxville resident Sandi Burdick is an accomplished gardener and abstract painter. Born in Idaho Falls, Idaho she grew up surrounded by nature and enjoyed the outdoors. At a very young age, Sandi’s mother saw artistic promise in her and nurtured her creativity with lessons from an art tutor. Although she excelled in math and science and eventually embarked on numerous business ventures with her husband, Tom Boyd, Sandi never lost her passion for art.

Throughout the years, as Sandi traveled the world for work and pleasure, she developed a great appreciation for art from diverse cultures and exotic locations. Whether trekking through Nepal or hiking the Appalachian Trail, her firsthand experience of the wonders of nature poured into her own creative aesthetic. Initially, these experiences shaped her passion for gardening. With the help of her husband, Sandi created elaborate gardens using plants, water, natural materials, and sculpture to create beautiful vignettes. She arranged textures and colors to create unique vistas in the way an artist might manipulate paint on a canvas.

In what she describes as a seamless transition, Sandi has now become that artist, creating abstract paintings on canvas with colorful acrylic paint and textural materials. Influenced by her lifelong adventures and inspired by nature, she has found passion and peace in painting and has pursued this interest energetically. Sandi credits mentor and instructor Ginger Oglesby in helping her to master her craft, and appreciate the possibilities of her materials. Having a dedicated studio has also positively impacted her work, giving Sandi the space to create larger pieces. While still an avid gar-dener, she has immersed herself in her painting. Sandi Burdick is a painter passionate about experimenting with her materials, refining her mark making and sharing the beauty she sees and feels through her work.

Kirstie Durham is a Knoxville-based textile and fabric artist. Inspired by patterns, color, and texture, her work focuses on the marriage of fine art and craft by creating contemporary quilted tapestries and appliques using traditional techniques. Using mostly secondhand fabric and even some irregular quilted squares passed down by Durham’s grandmother, her series Test Kit is an illustration of intergenerational creativity and the rooted Appalachian tradition of resourcefulness.
