JUNE 21, 2019 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM
A City Divided
It’s been over 150 years since the battle of Knoxville, one of the most sharply divided cities during the civil war. Occupied by both sides with recruiting offices set up on Gay Street on the same day, Knoxville was home to spies, street fights, and family feuds that outlasted the war.
Visit the downtown sites and then get an overview of the battles and fortifications from the observation deck of the Sunsphere.
Details:
Meet on the porch of the East Tennessee History Center, 601 S. Gay Street. Tours last approximately 90 minutes.
Adults: $25. Children 6-12: $17 (Group rate available). For more information or to book your tour, please visit the Knoxville Walking Tours Website

KNOXVILLE WALKING TOURS – KNOXVILLE’S MUSICAL HISTORY
JUNE 22, 2019 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM
Tribal to Techno
Knoxville’s story has always been set to music, from the time when the poetic rhythms of the native Cherokee tribes still echoed in the hills and the ballads of the Scots-Irish settlers were sung around campfires on the riverbanks. Immigrants from all over the world brought new instruments and tunes to enliven the song and East Tennessee became known as a home to musicians of every genre, whether classical, jazz, R&B, rock-n-roll, Americana, or the avant-garde sounds of ska, techno, and whatever’s unveiled at this year’s Big Ears Festival.
Details:
Meet in the Knoxville Visitor Center, 301 S. Gay Street. Tours last approximately 90 minutes.
Adults: $20. Children 6-12: $14 (Group rate available). For more information or to book your tour, please visit the Knoxville Walking Tours Website

Knoxville Symphony Orchestra: String Camp Performances
Category: Free event, Kids, family and Music
More than 200 students will gather at Bearden High School for one week to participate in Summer String Camp, put on by the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra staff and volunteers. Students will rehearse with KSO musicians and public school music specialists, practice their string instruments and perform in concert together on Friday, June 21 at 2:30 p.m. at the Bearden High School Auditorium, the final day of camp.
There are four orchestras led by conductors from the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra.
“I am brimming with pride to have reached our 25th year of Summer String Camp,” said Kathy Hart, Manager of the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra (KSYO) and founder of String Camp. “This year, the theme is “OPERAtion Orchestra - all music from different operas. We will welcome special guest Andrew Skoog, tenor and leaders of Reimagining Opera for Kids, from Indiana University. Students will learn music from various operas and practice performing as an ensemble in addition to practicing their instruments and honing skills. String Camp combines fun with rehearsal and results in a fantastic group performance at the end of the week. These young musicians work with coaches throughout the week to rehearse. It is always a treat to see the progress of these young musicians as they refine their technique and fall deeper in love with music.”
The Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra Association has held Summer String Camp for 25 years running. Students range in age from 6 – 18 and perform at all levels of experience. The full schedule and more information about Summer String Camp can be found here. Students will learn from and practice with KSYO Conductors, KSO musicians who are coaches, and area orchestra directors, private instructors, and University of Tennessee Music Majors and Alumni. Graduates/alumni of the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra also volunteer to help with String Camp.

The Central Collective: Style Swap presented by Shante' Swain
Category: Festivals, special events
Shante' Swain - Wife. Mom. Entrepreneur. Experience curator.
One of my many passions is bringing people together for a good time or a great cause. I’ve been told for most of my adult life that I have a niche for planning and executing events with style. After over 16 years of planning everything from fashion shows, charity events, fundraisers, soirées and mixers I decided to take a step out on faith to make the glorious events that occur in my head happen in real life. Welcome to the experience. Join me as I continue to curate meaningful events to bring together the community!
How do I prepare for Style Swap?
1) Go through your closet and grab the clothes, accessories, and shoes (in good condition) you no longer use. Clothing from all seasons are welcome.
2) Put all your items in bags and bring them to the Style Swap.
3) Once at the event one of our helpers will take your items from you, so you can grab some refreshments, enjoy your drink, and enjoy a style session from lifestlyist Jessica Gautier (@thelookforjess).
4) Once the swap starts, you’ll have a ball going through the items. It’s like shopping, only better, because every item is hand-picked and FREE!
Unswapped items will be donated to Ladies of Charity (https://www.ladiesofcharityknox.org).
At The Central Collective, 923 N. Central Street, Knoxville, TN 37917. Tickets: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/style-swap-featuring-thelookforjess-tickets-62029533003
