McClung Museum: Film Screening: Cinema of Science
Category: Film, Free event and History, heritage
Curated by Michael Deike, Public Services Librarian.
Join us for screening that explores the use of contemporary film to bring complex, unimaginable science to a broad audience.
The evening will feature an episode from the 1980 Cosmos series with Carl Sagan alongside an episode of the rebooted version with Neil deGrasse Tyson. Both shows mark transitions in the way physics utilized the artistry of cinema for communication. As filmmakers have found since its invention, moving pictures—with a charismatic personality and a dash of entertainment—can serve as an effective tool for teaching, explanation, and even advocacy for the sciences.
Presented through a collaboration between the McClung Museum and University Libraries in conjunction with the exhibition, Science in Motion, on view at the McClung Museum from September 20, 2019 – January 5, 2020.

UT Arboretum: The American Black Bear: A Visual Walk Into Their Wild Lives
Category: Free event, Lecture, panel and Science, nature
Being so close to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, it seems we have a fascination with bears. Come to the UT Arboretum Auditorium on Thursday, November 14, 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. for an educational presentation about the American black bear by renowned photographer Chris Norcott. This very popular program is free but seating is limited, so people must RSVP in advance to “The American Black Bear.” Go to http://utarboretumsociety.org/ or call 865-483-7277. Make sure to RSVP with the total number in your party and include your contact information. The UT Arboretum is located at 901 S. Illinois Avenue in Oak Ridge.
Norcott has spent more than a decade observing and studying black bears in the wilds of the Great Smoky Mountains. He spends much of each year hiking off trail in the backcountry observing the wild and secretive lives of black bears. He photographs the bears’ rarely seen habitat and documents the behaviors of these beautiful animals.
Sponsored by the UT Arboretum Society, Norcott will be showing his images and sharing stories of their survival in the wilderness. He shares stories of a first-time expecting mother building her winter den during a snowstorm. The mother shows her first-year cubs how to forage for their favorite fruits and hard mast. Norcott plans to have some of his work available for sale after the presentation.
Celebrating 54 years in 2019, this program is one of many activities offered by the UT Arboretum Society. The program is cosponsored by the UT Forest Resources AgResearch and Education Center.
The Forest Resources AgResearch and Education Center which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014, is one of ten outdoor laboratories located throughout the state as part of the UT AgResearch system. AgResearch is a division of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Institute of Agriculture also provides instruction, research and public service through the UT Herbert College of Agriculture, the UT College of Veterinary Medicine, UT AgResearch and UT Extension offices, with locations in every county in the state.

UT Humanities Lecture: Women Artists in 18th-Century France
Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Free event and Lecture, panel
Knowing Their Place? Women Artists in 18th-Century France
UT Humanities Center Transatlantic Enlightenment Research Seminar Presents Melissa Hyde.
In her presentation, Professor Melissa Hyde explores questions of place in relation to women who worked as professional artists in 18th-century Paris. How did women like Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun go about making a place for themselves as artists in a world that was structured culturally, scientifically, legally, and politically to exclude them? How did neighborhoods and workspaces bear on their careers, on the art they produced, and on definitions and depictions of the self?
Melissa Hyde is professor of art history and Distinguished Teaching Scholar at the University of Florida. Her research and publications focus on gender and visual culture in 18th- and 19th-century France. She has been a fellow at the Clark Art Institute and at the Institut national d’histoire de l’art in Paris. Her publications include numerous articles, six edited volumes (most recently Rococo Echo: (Art, Theory, and Historiography from Cochin to Coppola), as well as catalogue essays for museums, including the National Gallery in DC, the National Museum in Stockholm, and the Cooper Hewitt Museum of Design in New York. She is past president of both the Historians of Eighteenth-Century Art and Architecture and the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies.
