Tri-Star Arts is pleased to present Knoxville Local at the East Tennessee Foundation (520 W. Summit Hill Drive, Suite 1101, Knoxville, Tennessee), the first in our new Local exhibition series highlighting TN Artists. The show’s curator is East-Tennessee native Ashley Layendecker.

Knoxville Local features the work of 23 Knoxville-area artists including Ashley Addair, Eleanor Aldrich, Nuveen Barwari, Brianna Bass, Joshua Bienko, Eric Cagley, Nick DeFord, Lynne Ghenov, Michael Giles, Spencer Grady, Daniel Hughes, Quynh Lam, Mary Laube, Marta Lee, Paul Lee, Nyasha Madamombe, Erica Mendoza, Althea Murphy-Price, Jing Qin, Kayla Rumpp, Jered Sprecher, Megan White, and David Wolff.

The exhibition will be on view virtually at its outset, with expected in-person viewing opportunities coming in late 2021 (more details and interactive media to come). Knoxville Local will run from October 1, 2020, through December 31, 2021. The show coincides with the 35th anniversary of the ETF in 2021.

Dogwood Arts is on a mission to Keep Knoxville Blooming and make it easy for you to make a difference: one tree at a time. Dogwood trees are native to our area and offer 4 seasons of interest: spring blooms, summer shade, crimson fall color and winter berries for wildlife. Our trees come from a grower in Middle Tennessee, are disease-resistant, spring-blooming, and available in pink or white.

Option 1: Pick-Up & Plant Yourself
Purchase bare-root trees and plant them yourself! Order trees now through November 18th to pick-up locally on December 5th (pick-up location TBD). Plan ahead for spring blooms! Fall/winter is the best time to plant trees: the combination of warm soil, fall rains, and cool temperatures stimulates root growth to help your tree get established for next spring.

Option 2: Buy in Memory or Celebration
No matter what time of the year, you can celebrate a special event, honor an individual, or memorialize a loved one by donating a tree to the Historic Dogwood Trails. Your gift will Keep Knoxville Blooming and include a commemorative card (with your personal message) that will be mailed to the recipient of your choosing.

On October 1, we will open a three week run of Macbeth, which seems a wonderful show for the Halloween season. We will play Thursday through Sunday evenings at 7:00 pm, October 1 – 18. Reservations can be made at the Ijams web site, www.ijams.org/shakespeare. Reservation fees are $15 for guests 13 years and older.

We will use a limited cast as we did with Much Ado and will once again collaborate with 70/30 Creative on the production. The audience will be limited in size as well to maintain social distancing. The cast will be Caleb Burnham, Gray Casterline, H. Caitlin Corbitt, Tyler Gregory, Garrett Marshall, Nathan McGhee and Raine Palmer. It will be directed by Ashley Frietag.

Appalachian Ballet 16th Fundraising Blue Jeans and Ballet Performance.

Due to Covid-19 seating is limited and tickets are available only by calling the Box Office @ 865-981-8590. Ticket confirmation will be emailed. Therefore, there will be no will call on the evening of the event. As always, this will be an exciting evening to support ABC!

Ticket includes performance, dinner & wine in the Ronald and Lynda Nutt theatre. Dinner will be at 6 p.m. and the performance begins at 7 p.m.

Our annual fundraising event is going virtual this year!

We are pleased to announce a special streaming concert from the Tennessee's legendary stage with Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors on Thursday, October 1, which is the Theatre's 92nd Anniversary. The concert will be free to watch, but we encourage donations and there will be an online auction with autographed items, unique experiences, art, and more. There are also special packages available to purchase to make your viewing experience even better (including the opportunity to join us in person at the Theatre to watch the concert on the big screen!).

This year’s fundraiser is more important than ever as we have lost 95% of our revenue due to closing during the pandemic. The Tennessee Theatre misses being filled with audiences who come together to experience its magic and make memories to be cherished for years to come. But this dark period is only an intermission, and we look forward to the next act! We need your help so that we will be ready to bring back live events as soon as it is safe and possible for everyone. Jeannette Brown published short stories in respected journals for decades, but landing a publishing house for her first novel was another story. Come hear the journey, one full of creative maneuvers as well as persistence, to getting The Illusion of Leaving published by Texas Review Press in May 2020.

Brown’s work has appeared in Bellevue Literary Review, Southwestern American Literature, New Millennium Writings and Steel Toe Review. She is the co-editor of Literary Lunch, a KWG food anthology. She has enjoyed residencies at the Sewanee Writers’ Conference, Rivendell Writers’ Colony and Hedgebrook/India.

Please join us at 5:00 PM on October 1, 2020 for our annual Riggsby Lecture! Samantha Kelly (Rutgers Univ.) will speak about “The Other Christians of the Late Medieval Mediterranean: Ethiopian Settlement and Exchange with Latin Europe, c. 1200–c. 1550.”

Ethiopian Christian settlements, which dotted the eastern Mediterranean from the twelfth century, became both a primary source of Latin Christian knowledge about Ethiopia and the springboard for a similar settlement in Rome around 1500. This talk explores the Mediterranean facet of Ethiopian Christianity in these centuries, both as a network for Ethiopian pilgrims and settlers and in the perception of many Latin Christians.

Samantha Kelly is a professor of history at Rutgers University. Her research examines relations between Europe and the Christian kingdom of Ethiopia in the pre-modern era. She is the author of The ‘Cronaca di Partenope’: An Introduction to and Critical Edition of the First Vernacular History of Naples (2011) and The New Solomon: Robert of Anjou (1309-1343) and Fourteenth-Century Kingship (2003, winner of the Marraro Prize of the American Catholic Historical Association).

This event will occur on the weekend of October 3rd and 4th. Time slots range from 10am-8pm. The last day to reserve a slot is October 1st at midnight.

Momentum Dance Lab is launching a new fundraiser! Imagine a few highly trained beautiful dancers performing in your own back (or front!) yard for you and your family or a small group of friends. We’re ready to come and perform one or two small pieces, performed by some of our most highly skilled dancers, and you don’t even have to get dressed for the theater! Our dancers will arrive, perform, and leave during your chosen one hour time slot. They’ll be able to stay about an extra five minutes after the performance to answer questions about dance or MDL in particular, and for you to browse and order MDL logo’d merchandise. The dancers will need to travel to their next drop in performance site in a timely manner, so they sadly will have to stick to their schedule. This is guaranteed to be great fun!

Where: In order to participate, performance locations must be within Knox County. If you live more than 30 minutes away from Downtown Knoxville please note that when you reserve your time slot, so we can do our best to accommodate all our hosts.

Payment will be accepted upon arrival. Payment options include Venmo, Paypal, Credit/Debit Card, and Exact Cash. The cost is $30 for a one-piece performance, or $50 for a two-piece performance.

The Athens Area Council for the Arts is excited to announce its current exhibit is available to view in person at The Arts Center and online through October 28, 2020.

The exhibit is hosted by AACA’s Visual Arts Committee and includes work from four of its members: Clarice Baggett, Sandy Brown, Stefani Burchfield, and Jan Burleson. The twenty one paintings featured are oil, acrylic, or watercolor and vary in technique, style, and subject matter.

The public is invited to tour the exhibit free of charge at The Arts Center. The Arts Center remains closed to the public; however, exhibit tours are available by appointment.
