The Knoxville Museum of Art presents A Lasting Imprint: Rendering Rhythm and Motion in the Art of Black Mountain College now through May 2, 2021.

More than 50 prints, textiles, drawings, paintings and sculptures drawn from the extensive holdings of the Asheville Art Museum document a particularly rich and creative moment of radical experimentation with ways to integrate music, movement, and the visual arts. The exhibition includes work by the most adventurous and influential artists associated with Black Mountain College including Josef and Anni Albers, Ruth Asawa, Ilya Bolotowsky, John Cage, Buckminster Fuller, Lorna Blaine Halper, Kenneth Noland, Robert Rauschenberg, Marianne Preger-Simon, and Kenneth Snelson.

Black Mountain College, an experimental school in the North Carolina mountains near Asheville, was active from 1933 to 1957. The secluded environment fostered a strong sense of individuality, inter-disciplinary experimentation, and creative intensity, and served as a key setting in which artists revolutionized a broad range of modern art forms. Movement and music—both time-based activities—can be difficult to express in static media such as painting, drawing, and photography, yet many artists feel called to explore them. Movement serves as inspiration—either to capture it or to create it in entirely different media. Similarly, music is driven by rhythm, patterns, and variations that are enticing departures for visual artists. In few places did movement, music, visual arts, and myriad other disciplines intermingle with such impact as they did at Black Mountain College, which profoundly influenced the course of American modernism.

A Lasting Imprint is organized by the Asheville Art Museum (AAM), Asheville, North Carolina and features key works from the museum’s Black Mountain College Collection.

The Scale Figure’s Home will be a show that explores the narrative of the scale figure. The scale figure is a character that has always been overlooked and not commonly occupying the mind of the creator, the architect. It is always the narrative of the space, the character of the building that is filled with great detail, yet has there been a moment of pause to ponder about the story of the scale figure?

Like a pochade silhouette looming throughout the space of the creator, there are many questions that are answered such as the scale of the drawing, the representation of the space, who occupies the area, and the spacial experience, but never questions such as, who is that person, where have they journeyed, and why they are here? The Scale Figure’s Home is here to answer the depths and the detail of the scale figures narrative and highlight that even the most “overlooked” character is the most important.

January 23rd Workshop (Cyanotype Prints) 11AM-2PM - Learn one of the original photographic processes! Cyanotype is one of the oldest printing processes invented by Sir John Herschel in 1842. In this workshop, you will learn to make a unique one of a kind handmade print by coating various papers with Cyanotype chemicals and developing them in the sun. A materials fee of $40 is due at or before the event. This class is limited to 5* participants. Be sure to register for the event by Friday, September 11th to secure your spot! January 30th Workshop (Camera For Christmas) 11AM-2PM - Did you get a new camera for Christmas? Do you need some help figuring out all the buttons, dials, controls and settings? Many first time photographers have the same questions! What are all those settings for anyway? Do you need a computer? Time to Strut Your Stuff! VIDEO AUDITIONS for street characters for the Tennessee Pirate Fest!
Saturdays, January 23 & 30 from 2-5pm ET.

SEEKING adults of all ages, sizes, and levels to play costumed street characters the our Pirate Fest. Mature minors will be considered if they have theatrical experience and reliable transpiration.

To audition:
1) Review show premise and characters
2) Fill out online contact form
3) For 1st audition, be prepared to:
a) SPEAK in an English and Pirate accent
b) SING any song in your key (1 verse 1 chorus or happy birthday)
c) READ for characters that interest you (see buttons for scripts below)
d) DEMONSTRATE MOVEMENT (if interested in choreography)

4) Contact Barrie the entertainment director at DarkhorseLLC@comcast.net or 865-466-1902 to schedule a time to audition via Facebook Messenger Video. (Sat 1/23 & 1/30 2:00-5:00 pm ET). 15 minute slots for returning actors, 30 minute slots for new actors.

​NOTE: If you pass the first audition, you will either be cast in a general role to start (e.g. pirate, socialite, marine) OR invited to call backs to read with other actors to determine your specific part in the ensemble. Continued refinement of all characters will occur during rehearsals.
