The WordPlayers of Knoxville will produce a staged reading of Steve Sherman’s new play, A Fly in November on Monday, April 12 at 7:00 PM in the Square Room, 4 Market Square, Knoxville. A Fly in November focuses on Lucas, a young slave in Knoxville, Tennessee, who is caught up in the conflict of two brothers fighting on opposite sides during the Civil War. The play takes place amidst the turmoil of a single week in November of 1863, just before and after the battle of Fort Sanders.

The WordPlayers is a 501(c) 3 theatre company based in Knoxville, TN. The Staged Reading Series is sponsored by Brad Croisdale of Realty Executives. Other plays in the series are Althea & Angela by Todd Olson and Till Death Do Us Part by Craig Smith.

Title: Building Nazi Occupied Krakow: Digital and Analog Approaches to the Spaces of the Holocaust

Plans for rebuilding Krakow during its WWII Nazi occupation were ambitious and followed Adolf Hitler’s goal to rebuild cities such as Nuremberg and Berlin. Also ambitious were the regime’s Holocaust goals of concentrating and ultimately murdering the Jewish population of Krakow. Comparing Nazi plans, drawings, and photographs to digital renderings of the Jewish ghetto, Professor Jaskot shows how spatial visualizations help us to see how the ambitions for establishing Nazi presence complemented but also contradicted spatial planning for the threatened Jewish community.

Knoxville Children’s Theatre (KCT) will hold auditions on Monday, April 12 for the upcoming live stage adaptation of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” The play will be performed June 4th through June 20th: Thursdays and Fridays at 7 PM, Saturdays at 1 PM and 5 PM, and Sundays at 3 PM.

Poor Charlie Bucket finds a Golden Ticket in his Wonka Chocolate Bar, sending him and his Grandpa on a magical tour of Willy Wonka’s renowned chocolate factory. One by one, the other children on the tour break the rules, but if Charlie survives the journey, he may find an even greater reward.

My name is Bo McGuire. I am the first grandchild of the late, great Evelyn Louise Blanton-Washington of Gadsden, Alabama. Now, even though I conjure her as a great historical figure, y’all don’t know her. Not yet. She is my mama’s mama, my Nanny, and I speak of her as royalty because she is—queen of my heart, my imagination. She was the savior of my young, incredibly queer life in the sometimes cruel geography of rural, working-class Alabama.

Socks on Fire is a lyrical testament to Southern women couched in the battle for my grandmother’s throne. I returned home from New York City to find that my Aunt Sharon, my favorite childhood relative, had locked her gay, drag-queen brother, my Uncle John, out of the family home. As a queer Southerner, who can be both equally protective and skeptical of the South, Aunt Sharon stoked a fire within me to document the place and the people I call home. Through a series of stylized reenactments spun in with family VHS footage, Socks on Fire documents the fluidity of identity, personality, and performance in my hometown among my Mama’s people.

The Ewing Gallery of Art + Architecture is pleased to present the first group of three MFA Thesis Exhibitions. In partial fulfillment of their graduation requirements, students pursuing the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree are required to mount a solo exhibition of work. These exhibitions take the form of small groups of students presenting concurrent solo exhibitions in the Ewing Gallery.

“Chain Maille Jewelry, the Ripples Bracelet,” with George Gallant. 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Registration and materials cost (including a $25 materials fee) is $55 for members or $60 for guests. Number of students: minimum is 2, maximum is 6.

FRIDAY, APRIL 16
“Watercolor 101, for Beginners,” with Vera Bogle. 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Registration and materials cost (including $5 materials fee) is $35 for members or $40 for guests. Number of students: minimum is 4, and maximum is 8.

TUESDAY, APRIL 20 (in person at the Plateau Creative Arts Center and also on Zoom)
Monthly Members Meeting: 9:30 a.m. In-person attendance will be limited due to social distancing.

Project Discussion, a bi-monthly artwork review session. Assess the artwork of participants and/or selected artwork in the gallery. The facilitator is John Anderson. 12:00 noon – 2:00 p.m. FREE and open to the public. Bring your artwork or just observe the session.

THURSDAY, APRIL 22
“Wire-Wrapped Natural Stones and Shells,” with Susan Smathers. 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Registration and materials cost (including $5 materials fee) is $35 for members or $40 for guests. Number of students: minimum is 4, maximum is 8.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 28
Life Drawing, with Dena Whitener, 12:00 noon – 2:00 p.m. A live model will be available for artists to sketch. Bring your sketch pad, media of choice, and camera to capture the pose. Cost is $5 model fee.

Instead of our usual large event downtown, Chalk (Your) Walk will take place on neighborhood sidewalks, driveways, and community spaces all across Knoxville from April 3rd - 12th! The competition is open to individual artists and families throughout Knoxville and the surrounding counties (100 mile radius of Downtown Knoxville).

The first 500 artists/families who register for the event will receive a free 48-count box of Koss Chalk Pastels to create their artwork! Everyone can participate in the event by chalking at home and sharing your work on social media, but you must register online by Friday, April 2nd in order to be eligible for awards. A panel of judges including civic leaders, professional artists, and art educators will review the submissions and award cash prizes and free art supplies to select artists in each age division.
