Zoo Knoxville: Zoo After-Hours
Category: Culinary arts, food, Festivals, special events, Kids, family and Science, nature
Zoo Knoxville’s all-new After Hours are a special way to experience the Zoo on Thursday evenings. These evenings are free for annual pass members or with a general admission ticket.
Featuring special menu items created by the Zoo’s executive chef, a new food truck each week, and of course craft beer, wines and specialty cocktails, it’s a perfect way to wind down each week with friends and family.
Always kid-friendly and always wildly fun! The Splash Pad is open all day and evening!
July Menu:
• Steak Fried Rice
• Chicken Tinga Tacos
• Tajin Ranch Corn Dogs
• Popcorn & Pork Rinds
July Draft:
• Printshop Neon Renaissance Pink Guava
A refreshing sour beer that balances a light sour profile with brininess from the sea salt addition and aromas of coriander. Fermented on over 1 pound per gallon of pink guava to provide a burst of citrus that complements (rather than overwhelms) the gose profile.
Drinks:
• Tequila Frozen Margarita
• Frosé
• Schulz Brau, Blackhorse, Yazoo, Black Abbey, and Yee-Haw Canned Beer
• High Noon
Food Trucks:
July 1: Capt. Muchachos
July 8: Orale Mexican Food
July 15: EnjoyLatin
July 22: Crazy Cubans
July 29: Just Say Queso
After-Hours is open to all ages. You can re-enter the zoo with your same day general admission ticket. After-Hours is open rain or shine.

Knox History Project: A Suttree Serenade
Category: Free event, History, heritage, Lecture, panel and Virtual
Thursday, July 1 at 6:00 p.m. on Zoom
Cormac McCarthy's 1979 novel about his hometown as it was, like it or not, around 1951, may be the most vividly Knoxvillian book ever printed. Recently it's honored in the name of a park and a popular downtown saloon, but on July 8, it will be celebrated with an outdoor festival at Lakeshore Park. Find out what it's all about, with a presentation that may be considered a virtual (and much shorter) version of the marathon pub crawl known as the Suttree Stagger.

Knoxville Writers' Guild: Fireworks Open Mic
Category: Free event, Literature, spoken word, writing and Virtual
Pull out your gunpowder musings. Take those exploding words, smooth over the rough edges and get them down to three fiery minutes. Then send them skyward at the Fireworks Open Mic. Read anything your cherry bomb muse demands, even if it’s not written by you. You are welcome to share a hot toddy beverage virtually and help us all get into the spirit. There are a few rules:
• Must be a member of the Knoxville Writers’ Guild (If not, join!)
• Send an email to Bob and he will place you in an exciting order of presentation. Please include whether your reading is fiction (poetry or prose) or non-fiction so he can mix up the order of readings.
• Did we mention, three minutes?
• All are welcome to attend and listen. REGISTER by midnight Wed., June 30.
It’ll be a hot time in the old town on July 1!
As always, programs are free, but you must register by midnight on Wednesday, June 30.
You will receive an email with the Zoom link the morning after registration closes. (Please check your junk or spam folder early if the email isn't received and notify us before the event starts.)

UT Arboretum Society: First Thursday Nature Supper Club
Category: Lecture, panel, Science, nature and Virtual
First Thursday Nature Supper Club on Thursday, July 1
Join us as we learn about monarch metamorphosis. People provide their own stay-at-home supper, and we provide the nature as local naturalist Stephen Lyn Bales will entertain and teach us via Zoom. According to “Scientific American,” over 80 percent of all life on Earth are insects with over 50 percent of those going through complete metamorphosis. It happens all around our homes all throughout the year, but few of us ever witness it. Bales will show us monarch butterfly metamorphosis and migration and follow one monarch he documented with his camera from egg to first flight.
