Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center: National Park Tours with Sam Venable
Category: History, heritage and Science, nature
Available Dates: Sept. 25, Oct. 9, and Oct. 23
For more than four decades, Sam Venable has been amusing readers around East Tennessee as an award-winning writer at the Knoxville News-Sentinel. While Sam might be a humor columnist now, he got his start as an outdoors writer for the paper. He’s also the author of several books and is a local, state, and national award winner for his writing. All this goes to show the folks on tour with Sam are in for a memorable adventure and some interesting tales. The naturalist will lead visitors on a trip through Great Smoky Mountains National Park with stops planned in Sugarlands and Newfound Gap. Make sure you bring your camera!
Great Smoky Mountains National Park is teeming with wildlife. It’s not unusual to see white-tailed deer, black bears, coyotes, foxes, turkey, or other animals while on tour. While it’s best not to approach or disturb the wildlife you see, they make for a great photo opportunity.
Sugarlands and Newfound Gap will offer plenty of chances for a photo of flora and fauna. Many more opportunities await our guests.
ACTIVITY RATING: Easy
ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: The tour will not involve hiking or very much walking, but visitors should be advised the tour does make frequent stops at several sites. Attendees will be entering and exiting the tour vehicles multiple times, and there are also some areas of uneven surfaces. Attendees will also have to climb a few steps to enter specific buildings.
Ticket Price is $90 per person and includes a boxed lunch. Please call 865-448-8838 or visit https://shop.gsmheritagecenter.org/ to purchase your tickets.
The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center places the highest priority on the health and well-being of its guests, employees, and volunteers. For this reason, the Heritage Center strongly recommends the wearing of masks by all guests while indoors. Masks are not required in the amphitheater as it is an open-air venue; however, capacity is limited for this concert and social distancing measures will be in place. Regardless of vaccination status, the CDC advises everyone to take precautionary measures, including the wearing of a mask over the nose and mouth while indoors, social distancing of six feet, avoiding crowds or poorly ventilated areas indoors, and frequent washing of hands with soap and water. The Heritage Center will continue to closely monitor CDC guidelines as well as any state-issued orders pertaining to COVID-19. If changes are deemed necessary, the Heritage Center will broadcast alerts via website, social media, and email/telephone when possible.

Flying Anvil Theatre: The Sunshine Boys
September 16-October 10
Thurs-Sat @ 7:30, Sun @ 2:00
Two local legends team up for The Sunshine Boys at Flying Anvil Theatre. The classic Neil Simon comedy stars David Dwyer and Steve Dupree as the titular characters: two aging vaudevillians who reunite for one last show. Director Jayne Morgan says audiences familiar with the two actors are in for a surprise. “This is Dave and Steve as you’ve never seen them. They are creating characters very different from their own personalities. It’s been fun to see another side of these two beloved actors and a great challenge for them as well.”
Dwyer and Dupree play “Lewis and Clark,” top-billed vaudevillians for over 40 years. Now they aren’t even speaking. When CBS requests them for a “History of Comedy” retrospective, a grudging reunion brings the two back together, along with a flood of memories, miseries and laughs. The show was a hit on Broadway and revived several times with actors such as Dick Van Dyke, Walter Matthau and Danny DeVito.
Morgan says The Sunshine Boys was to be the theatre’s official grand reopening. “Instead, we’re still limiting seating and requiring masks. Plus, we’re joining the other theatres in town in requiring proof of vaccination or negative Covid test at the door. Keeping audiences safe is our highest priority.”
Rounding out the cast are Nick Silver, Yolanda Treece, Casey Kain, Ashley Guthrie Baker and Philip Brady. Randy Thompson is stage manager, set design is by Steve Krempasky, Jordan Vera designed lights and Virginia Baldwin is costume designer. Props and set dressing by Jordan McCready.
Tickets for The Sunshine Boys are available at www.flyinganviltheatre.com or on the theatre’s Facebook page. The show opens with a Pay What You Can preview on Thursday, September 16, and runs through Sunday, October 10. (There is a second Pay What You Can performance on Wednesday, September 22.) Tickets are $25 and $27, $13 for students.

Art Guild at Fairfield Glade: Randy Halverson & Self Portraits
Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Fine Crafts and Free event
Oil painter Randy Halvorsen is the Art Guild’s Featured Artist for September, 2021. He will be honored at the Fun and Wine Friday Reception on September 3rd from 5:00 - 7:00 PM.
Randy’s paintings will be on display along with the monthly members’ gallery artwork exhibit. September will also feature Art Guild members’ special exhibit, Self Portraits. The public is invited to come and enjoy a glass of wine or non-alcoholic beverage, meet Randy and other artists, and view a wonderful variety of artwork.
Randy grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and attended school in the suburbs. During his senior year of high school, he explored painting in oils, and discovered it was an effective outlet for expressing his moods and emotions. Life got in the way, and the hustle and bustle of a busy schedule left little time for painting. In 2017, Randy and his wife, PJ, built a home in Crossville and joined the Art Guild at Fairfield Glade. Randy finally had the time to return to oil painting, taking lessons from the late Angel Fernandez, artist and Art Guild member. Coupled with reading books about painting, Randy’s passion for oil painting was restored, and he learned the value of painting what he wanted his viewers to see, not what was literally there for anyone to see. He now has an art studio, and the time to express himself through the beauty and flexibility of oil painting. Randy appreciates the support he’s received from Art Guild members in his pursuit of expressing himself through art.
Hours: Mon-Sat 9 AM - 4 PM. Art Guild at Fairfield Glade at the Plateau Creative Arts Center, 451 Lakeview Drive, Fairfield Glade, TN 38558. Information: 931-707-7249, www.artguildfairfieldglade.net
