The Art Market Gallery at 422 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville invites the public to come see original art and fine crafts created by their 50+ juried local artists during The Big Ears Music Festival.

The theme for the works of art created by their members during Big Ears is “Rockin Creations” and all the amazing art on display in the gallery is for sale. Everyone is invited to the artists' reception with live music and refreshments on Saturday, April 1. The reception is free and open to the public. Come by and check it out and meet the artists of the Art Market at the Artist Reception on Saturday, April 1 from 2:30 PM – 5 PM!

Hours for the gallery during Big Ears are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 11 AM to 6 PM; Sunday 1 PM to 6 PM.

The Art Market Gallery is the oldest gallery in Knoxville dedicated exclusively to local and regional art. The Gallery currently exhibits the work of over 50 area painters, photographers, weavers, printmakers, woodworkers, potters, jewelers, fiber and glass artists.

Linda Parsons, Banquet Speaker and Poetry Session
Poet, playwright, essayist and editor Linda Parsons is the poetry editor for Madville Publishing and copy editor for Chapter 16, the literary website of Humanities Tennessee. Her work has been widely published, including contributions to The Georgia Review, Iowa Review, Prairie Schooner, Southern Poetry Review, Asheville Poetry Review, Shenandoah, and Ted Kooser’s syndicated column, American Life in Poetry. Her sixth poetry collection, Valediction, is forthcoming in 2023. Four of her plays have been produced by Flying Anvil Theatre in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Kolaj Magazine is a quarterly, printed, art magazine reviewing and surveying contemporary collage with an international perspective. The publication explores collage as a medium, a genre, a community, and a 21st century art movement. Critical reviews and essays are cut and pasted with artist profiles, event highlights, and articles on techniques and materials. Kolaj is published in Montreal, Quebec by Maison Kasini.

ABOUT "MYTHICAL LANDSCAPE: SECRETS OF THE VALE"—
“The peaceful valley,” wrote William Wilson in 1904, “appears to have had a peculiar attraction for beings supernatural; and for generations its bosky glens and leafy braes have been the reputed haunt of ghosts, fairies, witches, and other beings of an uncanny kind. This sweet, pastoral vale in its nine miles course can boast of scenery unequaled in its quiet beauty, possessing in its woods and waters, its hazelly glens and green-clad hills, everything that can contribute to the making of the finest landscape, while to increase the charm it abounds in the most romantic tales of byegone days.” Sanquhar is a village on the River Nith, up from Dumfries, down from Glasgow, a former Royal Burgh, home to the world’s oldest working post office and the oldest curling society. The Crichton Family ruled the land from the time of Robert the Bruce until they threw such a lavish party for James VI and I in 1617 that they went bankrupt. A monument in town is dedicated to Covenanters who fought against government interference in religious affairs. A forge on Crawick Water made shovels and other tools. A carpet factory boasted fifty-four working looms at the height of production. Saint Bride’s Church, the Tolbooth, sheep grazing the fields, the castle ruins, rabbits in Queensberry Square. What stories does this mythical landscape hold? “Mythical Landscape: Secrets of the Vale” is an exhibition by an international group of artists, all of whom traveled to Sanquhar to investigate a sense of place and make artwork that speaks to the rich history and folklore of the region. Artworks reference stories from the past (true or otherwise) and consider the history of the region. Many of the works were shown at MERZ Gallery during Sanquhar’s Festival of Folklore, 22-25 September 2022. The artwork will be the subject of a film by David Rushton and used to illustrate a forthcoming, abridged version of William Wilson’s 1904 book, Folk Lore and Genealogies of Uppermost Nithsdale.

No men. No boats. All adventure! In this true(ish) retelling of the 1869 Grand Canyon expedition, a one-armed captain and a crew of loyal volunteers set out to chart the course of the Colorado River.

Behind the Scenes Sunday will take place following the March 19 following the matinee. A Talk Back will take place Sunday, March 26th following the matinee. The Open Captioned performance is Sunday, April 2nd at 2:00 pm.

Lynda Best, Painting
Lynda developed her own style for showing the frozen moment - “That moment when time stops, when we are a witness to nature and it fills us with a sense of wonder and awe.” Our spirit is found and often rediscovered in nature and it is this spiritual connection that nourishes and inspires her art. Lynda captures this “moment” with acrylic paint in a modern impressionistic style using entrancing outlines and colors to “freeze” that continual, ever changing movement of nature.

Sherrie Wilson, Fiber
A 4th generation fiber artist, Sherrie created couture clothing, art quilts, and watercolors before discovering SAORI weaving in 2015. She was immediately enthralled by the philosophy of self- expression without the need to conform. SAORI’s four directives inform her work: “Consider the difference between man and machine; See with eyes that shine; Be bold and fearless; Share freely within the group.”. Sherrie often uses found items, hand spun wool and wool locks in her work as well as traditional weaving yarn.

Opening Reception: Friday, Mar 3, 2023, 5-9pm

Lonnie Holley’s life and work read as a narrative retelling of Black American history—the residual effects of the Jim Crow era, the triumphs of the Civil Rights movement, and the struggles with false narratives around class mobility and race. Holley’s multidisciplinary practice seeks to educate viewers as a means of remedying the historical amnesia surrounding these topics. Rooting himself in the events of the past, the artist moves into the future—presenting synesthetic, multimedia work that visually engages its viewers with unique found objects and intricate motifs to subsequently inform on topics such as inequity and history as memory. Known throughout the art world for his found-object sculptures, paintings, and installations, Lonnie Holley gained a new audience when he started releasing and performing his music during the 2010s.

The UT Downtown Gallery is pleased to present a selection of recent works on paper, sculpture, paintings, and short films. Throughout the exhibition, we will be screening I Snuck Off the Slave Ship, I Went A Little Too Far (Mistreating Love), and I Woke Up… This exhibition is in collaboration with Knoxville's Big Ears Music Festival, where Holley will be performing at the end of March. The UT Downtown Gallery is proud to be a free Big Ears Festival venue.

Lonnie Holley (b. Birmingham, AL, 1950) lives and works in Atlanta, Georgia. His work is represented in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; among many others. Holley’s work has been presented in numerous solo exhibitions including at Dallas Contemporary, Dallas, TX (2022); Parrish Art Museum, Water Mill, NY (2021); Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, Atlanta, GA (2017); Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art; Charleston, SC (2015); Birmingham Museum of Art, Birmingham, AL (2004), and many more. Holley has been the subject of several documentary films, and his own directed short film I snuck off the slave ship premiered at Sundance in 2018.
