A collaboration between the Clarence Brown, the Institute of American Civics, the departments of English, Classics, History, and Theatre at UT, and the international research group the R/18 Collective.

Cato is the play Washington staged at Valley Forge after that 1777-78 winter. It is set in north Africa in 46 BCE, as Cato braces for the invasion of Caesar and imperial Rome. It's about how a republic slips into empire and becomes vulnerable to dictators. The play raises key questions for our time about the nature of citizenship and the challenges of keeping democratic institutions healthy.

Sep 16, 19, 20 & 21 at 7 PM and Sep 17 at 2:30 PM
Each performance will run for about 1:15, after which there will be a brief panel consideration of one of the key questions listed here, followed by a time for the audience to talk to each other about that question. We hope it will model the kinds of conversations we need to have to find our way forward in these times.

Pam Tillis and Lorrie Morgan are currently delighting old and new fans across North America on their highly successful Grits and Glamour Tour. Veteran recording artists and performers, they grace the country format with style, flair, and undeniable talent that is captivating and timeless.

Their career highlights are numerous and varied. Combined, they recorded 28 top 10 hits, more than 18 million records sold, and 12 number one songs. There have been Grammys, CMA Awards, movie credits, television appearances, and Broadway performances. They rocked arenas, helmed world-class symphonies, and toured on almost every continent. As a result, these 50-somethings are more than a little flattered that they can still sell out shows, turn heads, and make hearts beat fast nearly four decades into their careers. It’s almost unnecessary to point out how rare it is to have such long-term success in an industry so fickle, but Pam Tillis and Lorrie Morgan haven’t missed a beat. Also, they both maintain extensive solo touring schedules, enhanced by the buzz that surrounds the Grits and Glamour tour.

Our Gallery and Studios are expanding! We have doubled the Gallery space and increased out working studios. We also have a classroom for workshops! We are excited and would like to share that with you.

At our Celebration we will have music by Jan and Joe Wood and refreshments. This is in addition to the new art that is displayed and the studios that will be open for touring. The Gallery and Studios will be displaying the work of thirty-three artists. The work will include fine art and gifts of drawings, fiber arts, jewelry, mixed media, painting, photography, pottery, stained and fused glass, weaving, and woodworking. Artists will be available to share their techniques and inspirations.

Join our artists in our Celebration on Saturday, September 16 at the Art Center. The Gallery and Studios will be open during our normal hours on Saturday, 10:00-5:00.

Our normal hours are Monday, Wednesday-Saturday, 10-5pm and Sunday 1:30-5pm.

The University of Tennessee College of Music is thrilled to announce that New York Philharmonic Concertmaster Frank Huang will come to the Knoxville campus for a week of activities with students and faculty, culminating in a special performance with the UT Symphony Orchestra.

Frank Huang is a highly-respected violin virtuoso who joined the New York Philharmonic as Concertmaster in 2015. His many accolades include First Prize in the Walter W. Naumburg Foundation’s Violin Competition and the Hannover International Violin Competition, top prizes in the Premio Paganini International Violin Competition and the Indianapolis International Violin Competition, Gold Medal Awards in the Kingsville, Irving M. Klein, and D’Angelo international competitions. He has performed with many of the world’s greatest symphonies.

“We could not be more delighted for our students to share the stage with such a talented virtuoso as Frank Huang,” said Jeffrey Pappas, Natalie L. Haslam Founding Dean of the College of Music. “This is just another indication that the College of Music is part of a university on the rise that such an accomplished artist is eager to work with our faculty and students.”

Huang will conduct master classes with College of Music students earlier in the week before capping off the week’s events at a joint concert with the University of Tennessee Symphony Orchestra. The performance will feature colorful orchestral masterworks including UT alumna Dosia McKay’s “Watercolors,” Ottorino Respighi’s sensational “Fountains of Rome,” and the virtuosic Violin Concerto by Jean Sibelius. The concert will be conducted by James Fellenbaum, director of orchestras at the University of Tennessee College of Music.

“I’m so excited that an artist the caliber of Frank Huang will be performing with us, and I’m thrilled for our students who will get to collaborate with him in orchestra, play for him in masterclasses, and get to learn more about him and his career,” Fellenbaum said. “It’s going to be an incredible week!”

“I met Frank Huang at a festival and when I had the honor to play chamber music with him,” said Miroslav Hristov, coordinator of strings and professor of violin. “It was such an amazing experience that I immediately thought our students at the University of Tennessee College of Music must have that same opportunity to work and be around one of the most prominent artists in the world. That wish is coming true!”
