City of a Million Dreams
November 13, 2024

Writer and videographer Deb chronicles the parading club culture spawned by the legacy of funerals with music. This tradition is carried by the prolific clarinetist Michael White, renowned for playing “the widow’s wail” in sorrowful dirges. When Hurricane Katrina hits, White loses everything in the catastrophic flooding. In his struggle to rebuild, White becomes an everyman, embodying the resurrection spirit of jazz funerals.

East Tennessee Historical Society: Walther Barth Film Collection

Category: Film, History, heritage and Lecture, panel

Discover the story of German immigrant Walther Barth in one of the most fascinating historic motion picture collections at the Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound (TAMIS) on Wednesday, November 13, 2024 @ 12:00 p.m. at East Tennessee History Center, 601 S. Gay St.

One of the most fascinating historic motion picture collections at the Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound (TAMIS) is the Walther Barth Film Collection. Barth’s unique amateur films depict privileged society and tourism in Germany and the United States over the course of nearly 100 individual films shot between the 1920s and the 1960s. Conserving, preserving, and cataloging this collection has been a long-term project for TAMIS staff since 2007, culminating in a recent grant-funded comprehensive preservation project. TAMIS staff will describe different phases of this long-term project and show examples of recent state-of-the-art scans of the films.

John Morton is the McClung Historical Collection Audiovisual Archivist for the Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound. John holds an Honors BA in English and Film Studies from Calvin College, an MA in English from the University of Rochester, and certification in film preservation and archiving from the L. Sundress Academy: Space Adventure - Playing with the Page

Category: Classes, workshops, Free event, Literature, spoken word, writing and Virtual

The Sundress Academy for the Arts is excited to present “SPACE ADVENTURE: PLAYING WITH THE PAGE,” a workshop led by Livia Meneghin on Wednesday, November 13th, 2024, from 6:00 - 7:30 PM EST. This event will be held over Zoom. Participants can access the event at https://tiny.utk.edu/sundress (password: safta).

Short lines or long ones? Tercets or couplets? Sonnet or prose poem? Erasure or free verse? As poets, we ask ourselves questions about form and structure constantly. Words alone are just one aspect of poetry. Where they are placed on the page does just as much work to guide your reader, create meaning, and charge our poems. In this generative workshop, we will challenge the term “blank page” through play and prompts. We will explore the possibilities of the page, whether paper, digital, etc. We will discuss examples and draw wisdom from writers such as Tyehimba Jess, Alicia Mountain, M. NourbeSe Philip, and more.

Livia Meneghin (she/her) is the author of the chapbook Honey in My Hair and is the Sundress Publications Reads Editor. She earned a Writers’ Room of Boston Poetry Fellowship, Breakwater Review’s 2022 Peseroff Prize, and Second Place in The Room Magazine’s 2023 Poetry Contest. Her writing has found homes in Gasher, Thrush, Whale Road Review, and elsewhere. She earned her MFA from Emerson College, where she now teaches writing and literature. She is a cancer survivor.

The Bottom: Liquid Blackness by Chase Williamson

Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event

Reception: Nov 09, 2024, 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM
At The Bottom, 2340 E Magnolia Ave, Knoxville, TN 37917

Artist Statement: "In my paintings, I delve into the profound connection between Black women and the healing elements exuded by the Southern Black Garden and memorial waters. Using oil, glitter, and familial fabric, I create a revitalized perspective on what it means to exist in historical southern regions charged with painful remembrance. By situating Black femmes amidst vivid florals and racialized landscapes, I expose life that is not predetermined by the framed perspectives of the social world."

Chase Williamson is an MFA candidate in Painting + Drawing at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She centers the interconnection of Blackness, womanhood, & marginalized identity through her painted compositions. Born and raised in Franklin, Tennessee, her southern living experience is a major propeller for her work. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Art degree from University of Tennessee, Chattanooga in 2022, where she studied Studio Art & Psychology. Chase is fiercely passionate about creating mirrored representation; during undergrad, she painted the cover and interior artwork for the children’s book, “Creative God, Colorful Us”.
