UT Opera Theatre Presents: Cimarosa’s Il matrimonio segreto (The Secret Marriage)

  • November 22, 2024 — November 24, 2024

Category: Music and Theatre

Join us as UT Opera Theatre presents Cimarosa’s Il matrimonio segreto (The Secret Marriage), sung in Italian. Performances will be held at the Bijou Theatre in downtown Knoxville.

Jealousy, lust, greed, and secrets fuel the hilarious plot of Domenico Cimarosa and Giovanni Bertati’s sparkling farce, Il Matrimonio Segreto (The Secret Marriage). Geronimo seeks an arranged marriage between his eldest daughter, Elisetta and the wealthy Count Robinson. When the Count arrives to accept the dowry, he is instead infatuated with Geronimo’s youngest daughter, Carolina, and proposes to accept half the dowry amount if Geronimo agrees to offer Carolina’s hand in marriage instead of the supposed promised bride, her elder sister, Elisetta. Unaware that Carolina is already secretly married to one of his employees, Paolino, Geronimo is tempted to accept the Count’s renegotiated offer. Paolino and Carolina were hopeful to finally reveal their big secret once Elisetta would marry the Count. Unaware that Carolina and Elisetta’s Aunt, Fidalma is herself in lust with Paolino, he attempts to enlist Fidalma’s help. Mistaking his entreaties for amorous advances, Fidalma and Elisetta plot to have Carolina sent away to a convent so that Fidalma may marry Paolino and Elisetta may marry the Count. Paolino and Carolina plan to flee under the cover of darkness, but their escape is foiled and many secrets revealed!

The Bottom: Liquid Blackness by Chase Williamson

Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event

Reception: Nov 09, 2024, 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM
At The Bottom, 2340 E Magnolia Ave, Knoxville, TN 37917

Artist Statement: "In my paintings, I delve into the profound connection between Black women and the healing elements exuded by the Southern Black Garden and memorial waters. Using oil, glitter, and familial fabric, I create a revitalized perspective on what it means to exist in historical southern regions charged with painful remembrance. By situating Black femmes amidst vivid florals and racialized landscapes, I expose life that is not predetermined by the framed perspectives of the social world."

Chase Williamson is an MFA candidate in Painting + Drawing at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She centers the interconnection of Blackness, womanhood, & marginalized identity through her painted compositions. Born and raised in Franklin, Tennessee, her southern living experience is a major propeller for her work. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Art degree from University of Tennessee, Chattanooga in 2022, where she studied Studio Art & Psychology. Chase is fiercely passionate about creating mirrored representation; during undergrad, she painted the cover and interior artwork for the children’s book, “Creative God, Colorful Us”.
