On Sunday, March 23rd, the Smoky Mountain Blues Society and Bluetick Tavern will be pleased to present Deuce ‘n a Quarter. Tickets cost $20 for SMBS members and $25 for the general public. Doors open at 4 pm and the performance will run from 5 pm – 8 pm. Bluetick Tavern has a wonderful selection of food, beer, and liquor available to purchase and is located on 128 W Broadway Ave, Maryville, TN 37801

Deuce ‘n a Quarter is an award-winning band that has made quite an impression in the blues scene! As 2023 International Blues Challenge finalists, they have gained recognition amongst top blues acts and have earned themselves the title of one of the current notable bands. In addition, front-man Brian Peters was awarded the Lee Oskar Best Harmonica Player award in the 2023 International Blues Challenge. Original music is their forte and their sound has something for everyone, regardless of whether you prefer traditional blues or something more modern and upbeat. This is one band that should not be missed. Fans will tell you that seeing this act live is something special!

Pianist Priscila Navarro is the first prize winner of several international competitions, including the Liszt-Garritson International Competition in Baltimore, Maryland; Beethoven Sonata Competition in Tennessee; Chopin International Competition of Texas; Artist Series of Sarasota, Florida; Imola City Awards, Italy; and the Heida Hermanns International Music Competition in Connecticut. Priscila made her Carnegie Hall solo recital debut in 2013 as an international competition winner. Priscila is a champion and advocate of Latin American music, conducting research and creative activities to further the propagation of Latin American art. In her pursuit of representation and inclusion, she developed a piano method for children based on Peruvian folk tunes, the first of its kind, and many other programs and collaborations to further this effort. This past season, she presented a program of songs by American female composers alongside mezzo-soprano Sarah Barber. Priscila and Dr. Michael Baron released their first album in December 2021 with the MSR Classics label, followed by a Carnegie Hall premiere concert in March 2022. They have received five-star reviews from the American Record Guide and Fanfare Magazine. Priscila holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance and pedagogy from the Frost School of Music and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Florida Gulf Coast University. Besides her busy performance career, Priscila is a passionate pedagogue and has been on the jury at several international competitions, including the Chopin International Competition for Latin American pianists, the Heida Hermanns International Competition, and the Parnassus International Competition. She is also the artistic director and founder of the Parnassus Music Society, an organization that focuses on providing high-quality musical events in Latin America, as well as promoting young Latin American pianists with opportunities for performance and education. Priscila is Assistant Professor of piano at the University of Kansas. As a winner of the 2023 national audition, she also joined the roster of Astral Artists.

A magical fable with music. This exciting new play tells the story of the Fail family and their seemingly difficult challenge to just stay alive around blunt objects, disappearances and the odd case of consumption. Sometimes you just never see death coming. In this upbeat, tuneful, magical fable you can either worry about the ever-impending death or you can live, love, and sing some songs along the way.

Each day of the festival, a unique ensemble – featuring Lange, Rob Frye, and a cast of special friends and guests – will perform four experimental compositions alongside and impressionistic film exploring the forces shaping the West Texas landscape and Appalachian skies.

Kite Symphony is a multidisciplinary exhibition by Roberto Carlos Lange and Kristi Sword. The project features a series of drawings called Radio Telescope. Two films, one experimental piece called Star Scores, will be scored live during the Big Ears festival, and a film documenting sculptural interventions during their time in Marfa, Texas. Sound is the throughline between these diverse elements of this long-term project. Lange is a musician (widely known as Helado Negro), Sword is a visual artist, and Kite Symphony is an extension of their collaborative practice where they create work at the intersection of music, performance, and visual art. Parts of the film were originally commissioned by Ballroom Marfa and organized by Sarah Melendez.

Violins of Hope is a collection of over 50 violins that survived the Holocaust, played by Jewish musicians in ghettos, concentration camps, and even as symbols of resistance. Each violin, lovingly restored by Israeli master violin maker Amnon Weinstein and his son Avshalom, carries a powerful story of resilience and survival. These instruments bear witness to the indomitable spirit of their owners, whose music defied the darkness of one of history’s most tragic periods. The Violins of Hope project will feature performances, exhibitions, and educational programs that celebrate the enduring power of music and the human spirit. Through these events, communities will come together to reflect on the past and inspire a future rooted in hope, acceptance, and unity. Join us as we honor these extraordinary instruments and the stories they tell.
