Athens Arts Council: Songs and Stories of the Civil War
Category: Free event, History, heritage and Music
The Arts Center’s 2011-12 Black Box Concert Series concludes on April 13, 2012 with a performance entitled “Songs and Stories of the Civil War†by Birmingham-based musician, Bobby Horton. Showtime is 7:30 PM in the Sue E. Trotter Theater at The Arts Center, 320 North White St. in Athens, Tennessee.
“Songs and Stories of the Civil War†transports the audience back in time as Horton, dressed as a 19th century performer and using period musical instruments, explores the stories of both the North and South through the music they loved. Widely recognized as a leading authority on the music of the 1800’s in America, Horton produced much of the music and performed on ten of Ken Burns PBS documentaries, including “The Civil Warâ€, “Baseballâ€, and Our National Parksâ€. He also produced and performed the musical score for two A&E Network films and sixteen National Park Service films, among others. The concert is not just for Civil War buffs but for anyone who loves great music, inspired storytelling, and an evening of unforgettable entertainment.
The concert is offered in conjunction with an Arts Center exhibit mounted by South Arts entitled Rhythm & Roots Southern Music Traditions, which celebrates homegrown, community-based music making in words, pictures, and sound. The exhibit opening reception will take place prior to Horton’s concert from 6-7PM at The Arts Center, and admission is free.
Tickets for the concert are $15 for adults, $8 for students and are available at The Arts Center, by phone (423) 745-8781, and on line at www.athensartscouncil.org. For more information and directions call The Arts Center or go to the website, www.athensartsouncil.org.
