The Athens Community Theater will present their spring comedy, Duck Hunter Shoots Angel by Mitch Albom in the Sue E. Trotter Theater at The Arts Center on April 19-28, 2012. It is directed by veteran ACT actor, Dave Siklosi.

DUCK HUNTER SHOOTS ANGEL is the uproarious story of two bumbling Alabama brothers who have never shot a duck but think they shot an angel. As they lament their fates in a murky swamp, they are chased by a cynical tabloid journalist and his reluctant photographer, who don’t believe any of it – until feathers, wings and a tiara are discovered along the way. The play hysterically interweaves a love story, sibling rivalry, tawdry media, race relations and cultural stereotypes as the chase to find the angel builds to a crescendo in the swamp. Ultimately a sweet allegory about redemption, DUCK HUNTER SHOOTS ANGEL has been hailed by audiences as a rare comedy with a surprisingly heartfelt lesson.

Duck Hunter Shoots Angel opens with dinner theater by reservation only on Thursday, April 19th for $25 per person. The evening features a full meal and cash bar, beginning at 6:00 PM with show time at 7:30 PM. Other evening performances at 7:30 PM are April 20,21,26,27,28 and a Sunday matinee is offered on April 22 at 2PM. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students. The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra will perform the next installment of the Moxley Carmichael Masterworks Series on Thursday and Friday, April 19 & 20 at 8:00 PM at the Tennessee Theatre. The orchestra will present a concert featuring the music of Saint-Saëns and Schubert. The concert will open Schubert’s Symphony No. 8, “Unfinished.” Next, violinist David Kim will perform Saint-Saëns’ Concerto No. 3 for Violin. The orchestra will then perform Schubert’s Overture, D. 590 in D Major. To conclude the concert Children’s Poet Laureate Jack Prelutsky will narrate as the orchestra performs Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals. The concerts will be preceded by a pre-concert chat taking place on the stage of the Tennessee Theatre beginning at 7:00 PM.

Join Ijams volunteer Lynn Keffer as she reads the Caldecott Award winning children's book Inch by Inch by Leon Lionni. It's the story of a green inchworm proud of his kills at measuring everything. This class will be an introduction to the medium of watercolor while working on-site in the beautiful and blooming grounds of the Gardens. The class will cover the mixing of paints and basic techniques of watercolor. We will start small, trying to perfect and match the colors found in nature. All levels are welcome; basic materials will be provided. $30 for KBGA Members, $35 for non-members.

Lovers, wives and dalliances: William Shakespeare had so many affairs that his love life is legendary.

Ed Francisco, English professor and writer-in-residence at Pellissippi State Community College, discussed the liaisons in his first “Sexy Shakespeare” lecture a few months ago to a standing-room-only crowd. Now, he says, the research done for that lecture has inspired him to present a second lecture and write a novel.

Francisco will read from the first two chapters of his work-in-progress at the Thursday, April 19, lecture, “Sexy Shakespeare II: The Further Adventures of the Amorous Bard of Avon.” He will discuss Shakespeare’s web of women and, using material from the writer’s plays and poems, will speculate about the identity of the mysterious “dark lady,” whom Shakespeare apparently loved.

The community is invited to the free event. It takes place 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Clayton Performing Arts Center on the Hardin Valley Campus. The presentation is sponsored by Pellissippi State’s student service-learning club, Gnosis, and the college’s Faculty Lecture Series.

Although employment of graphic designers is expected to grow 13 percent between 2008 and 2018, job seekers also are expected to face “keen competition.”

Students completing their graphic design coursework at Pellissippi State Community College plan to get an edge on that “keen competition” on April 19, when they take part in the annual Communication Graphics Technology Student Design Showcase. This year’s theme is “Design is Served.”

The event is like a graduation, celebration and potential job interview, all rolled into one evening. This year, 35 students will present their portfolios for viewing and evaluation by invited area design professionals. Each student has his or her own table display, business cards and resumes on hand.

Also open to the public, the free CGT Student Design Showcase is 4-8 p.m. at the Bagwell Center for Media and Art on the Hardin Valley Campus.

The Brits will be celebrating William Shakespeare’s 448th birthday this month, and so can you. The Magnolia Avenue Campus Drama Club of Pellissippi State Community College invites the public to enjoy “Scattered Shakespeare,” a presentation of favorite scenes from the Bard of Avon’s plays, offered three times, beginning Wednesday, April 18. The student club will perform segments from “Macbeth,” “Hamlet,” “Henry V,” “The Taming of the Shrew,” “Romeo and Juliet,” “The Comedy of Errors,” “The Winter’s Tale,” “The Merchant of Venice” and “Julius Caesar.”

The event takes place in the Community Room of the campus’ Joe Armstrong Building, 1610 E. Magnolia Ave. Presentations are April 18, 4-5 p.m.; April 19, 7-8 p.m.; and the traditionally celebrated day, April 23, 7-8 p.m. The performances are free and light refreshments will be provided. Donations will be accepted at the door on behalf of the Pellissippi State Foundation.

In partial fulfillment of their graduation requirements, students pursuing the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree are required to mount a solo exhibition of work, and to defend their work during an oral examination in front of a faculty committee. Due to the number of graduate students enrolled in the UT Department of Art, these exhibitions generally take the form of small groups of students presenting concurrent solo exhibitions in the gallery space.
