Blount County Public Library presents a rare opportunity to encounter one of few remaining Tibetan Lamas whose story originates in Tibet prior to the occupation by communist forces.

Lama Norlha Rinpoche will share his story on Thursday, May 10, at 7 p.m. at the Blount County Public Library. He will be accompanied by his interpreter, Lama Jamdron.

Now 74 years old, Lama Norlha Rinpoche is visiting the Knoxville area and will present a public talk about his life growing up in Tibet, how he survived and escaped from prison camp, fled to Nepal and India to start a new life, and became one of the first Tibetans to immigrate to the West.

Rinpoche will especially emphasize how he has learned to transform misfortune into opportunity, even in the midst of the most harrowing circumstances. The talk will include pictures of the Tibetan region as well as an opportunity to ask Rinpoche questions.

Lama Jamdron, interpreter for Lama Rinpoche, has lived at Kagyu Thubten Choling Monastery since 1986, acting as assistant teacher for the three-year retreats and as translator and personal secretary for Lama Norlha Rinpoche. She has accompanied him on teaching tours all over the world including four trips to Tibet, assisting Lama Norlha in his efforts to establish and maintain monasteries for monks, nuns, schools and medical programs for the public.
Free and open to the public, the program is at the Blount County Public Library, located at 508 N. Cusick Street, Maryville.

The Museum of East Tennessee History is located in the East Tennessee History Center at 601 South Gay Street in downtown Knoxville.

The Town of Farragut Arts Council presents Paul Tinnel as the featured artist for May and June. Located at the Farragut Town Hall, his exhibit showcases handmade wood bowls created by the art of segmented bowl turning.

Tinnel, a Lenoir City, Tenn. native, is an Air Force veteran and is retired from Y-12 in Oak Ridge. Having always had an interest in building and repairing, he began woodworking as a hobby in 1986. Over time, Tinnel has produced a wide variety of items, both decorative and functional, including traditionally turned, solid wood bowls. Around 2008, he developed an interest in the challenge and art of segmented bowl turning. With approximately 100 bowls now to his credit, Tinnel continues to produce a variety of bowl styles using a number of different wood species. His work is also a featured exhibit at The Town Framery in Farragut.

The Farragut Town Hall is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located at 11408 Municipal Center Drive directly across from the Farragut Branch Post Office.

Graduating seniors in the School of Art and the College of Architecture and Design are honored each year when selected by committee as the top students among their peers.

The Knoxville Museum of Art presents Streetwise: Masters of 1960s Photography May 4-August 5, 2012.

This exhibition highlights the work of a group of eight American photographers who focused their lenses on the rapid social and political changes that transformed the nation during the turbulent 1960s. The featured images present a realistic, sometimes dire, view of America surveying the “outlaw culture” of bikers and chain gangs, Boston’s red light district known as the Combat Zone, Black Panthers, the gritty streets and neighborhoods of New York, the politically charged South, and fringe communities and subcultures around the country.

The public is invited to a preview party Thursday, May 3 from 5:30-7:30pm. This event is free and includes a gallery talk and cash bar.

Bliss Home will feature Bill Timm for May First Friday. A reception will be held at Bliss Home, 29 Market Square, from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday May 4th.

Bill Timm is a metal sculptor residing in Knoxville, TN, but is from traces his roots to the steel capital fo the world: Pittsburgh, PA. For ten years, Bill has created abstract and realistic sculptures from found objects. Bill is a self taught abstract and metal fabricator who has received several regional and national awards for his sculptures.

Bill’s art is viewable beginning May 4th and will remain through the end of the month.
