Art and science are intertwined in Nikon Small World as the photomicrographs showcase the delicate balance between outstanding scientific technique and exquisite artistic quality. "We are proud that this competition is able to demonstrate the true power of scientific imaging and its relevance to both the scientific communities as well as the general public," explains Eric Flem, Communications Manager, Nikon Instruments.

First place winners Dr. Jennifer Peters and Dr. Michael Taylor of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, partnered to capture the image highlighting their research of the blood brain barrier in a live zebrafish embryo, which is believed to be the first-ever image showing the formation for the blood-brain barrier in a live animal. The top five images in Nikon Small World include: the blood-brain barrier in a live zebrafish embryo; Live newborn lynx spiderlings; Human bone cancer (osteosarcoma) showing actin filaments (purple), mitochondria (yellow) and DNA (blue); Drosophila melanogaster visual system halfway through pupal development, showing retina (gold), photoreceptor axons (blue), and brain (green); and Cacoxenite (mineral) from La Paloma Mine, Spain.

This year's judges were comprised of top science and media industry experts: Daniel Evanko, Editor, Nature Methods; Martha Harbison, Senior Editor, Popular Science; Dr. Robert D. Goldman, Stephen Walter Ranson Professor and Chair, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology at Northwestern University and Liza A. Pon, Ph.D., Professor of Pathology and Cell Biology and Director, Confocal and Specialized Microscopy Shared Resource, Columbia University.

Knox Heritage presents the seventh annual Art & Architecture Tour, a guided walking tour of historic sites on the University of Tennessee campus. The artworks featured on the tour are photographs submitted to Knox Heritage’s Photography Contest, with eleven winning images creating the tour route. The Art & Architecture Tour is sponsored by McCarty Holsaple McCarty and High Resolutions Printing.

In addition to several historic buildings (>50 years old), a few structures designed by noted Knoxville architect Bruce McCarty will be featured on the tour. Mr. McCarty died in January at the age of 92.

Knox Heritage events almost always include an opportunity for social gathering and good food and drink. In keeping with that tradition, the Art & Architecture Tour commences with a reception at 5:30 p.m. at the McClung Museum with hors d’oeuvres and beverages for ticketholders. Around 6:30 p.m., the tour group departs on the route, based on the locations of the winning photographs. Serving as special tour guides for the event are Jack Neely, local historian, journalist, and author; and Knox Heritage Executive Director Kim Trent.

Beginning July 5 on First Friday, the winning photographs will be exhibited at the Emporium in downtown Knoxville, 110 S. Gay Street. The photos will be on display until July 26.

Tickets are $40.00 for Knox Heritage members and include the reception at the McClung Museum and the tour, and a set of postcards featuring the winning images. This band holds the all-time single show attendance record at Alive After Five. Originally formed in 1966 under the name Soul Sanction, this group became one of the legendary bands of East Tennessee. They have opened shows for B.B. King, James Brown, Ray Charles, and Bobby “Blue” Bland. At a special “Rename the Band Party” AA5 in 2006, their name was changed to Soul Connection. With their combination of keyboards, horns, and guitar, blended with a variety of male and female vocals, Soul Connection covers a wide musical spectrum of Rhythm & Blues and Soul, all done with infectious energy and unmistakable style.

Alive After Five is a unique live music series presented on thirty or more Fridays per year in four seasonal series. The programs take place in the smoke-free, casually elegant setting of the Great Hall in the Knoxville Museum of Art. There is a live band on stage, seating at tables, two cash bars, food from area restaurants, free freshly popped popcorn, free parking, and a licensed therapeutic masseuse available. Audience members can enjoy listening to music, dancing, and browsing the museum’s art galleries. Admission to the spring series premier of Alive After Five is $10 for general admission and $6 for museum members and college students with ID. Ages 17 and under are admitted free.

A coffeehouse-style concert called Soft Sounds for a Summer’s Eve will be held at The Arts Center in Athens, TN on Friday, June 14 at 7:30 pm in the Sue E. Trotter Theater. Featured will be two acoustic duos, Andrew Kimball and Lindsey Nunley, and Ashley and Ally Clark. Adam Klinker is featured on percussion. Emmy McKenzie will make a special guest appearance. Audience members will cast a deciding vote to determine the brand name of The Arts Center’s coffeehouse concert series.
Tickets are $10 in advance and at the door.

Prior to the concert, an opening reception for the exhibit Not Just a Snapshot, photography by Sheila Silvus Chesanow will be held from 5:30–7:00 pm. The public is invited to attend, and admission is free.

Now in its eighth year and premiering with a performance by the Early Morning String Dusters. For over 30 years, they have been recognized as one of East Tennessee’s most entertaining “party” bluegrass bands. Relying on comedy, parodies of classic tunes and hard driving, fast paced picking, the Dusters have been a favorite for weddings, birthdays, dedications, and other private events. Then in 2008, Americana radio station WDVX began showcasing the band at various public concerts, leading to a series of shows throughout East Tennessee, including their Heritage Center debut last year, in which they set the attendance record for a series premier.

All the concerts begin at 7:00 pm and are presented in the Heritage Center’s covered outdoor amphitheater with a scenic view of the mountains and sunset. The series is presented by Boyd’s Jig & Reel. Admission to the concerts is $5.00 and may be purchased at the door. Admission is free to all “Sunset Music Series” concerts for members of the Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center. Annual memberships to the Heritage Center may be purchased at the concerts for $15 per individual or $25 per family. Food and non-alcoholic beverages are available at the concession stand.

The Blount Mansion Association is excited to be hosting a Flag Day ceremony performed by a local Cadette Girl Scout Troop. The ceremony will start with the Troop removing the old American flag, Tennessee State flag, and Knoxville city flag, and then they will replace them with new flags. National Flag Day is celebrated every year on June 14 in the United States in commemoration of the anniversary of the adoption of the United States flag on June 14, 1777, and the flag raising ceremony will be held at the Blount Mansion, the birthplace of Tennessee. While also honoring the anniversary, the ceremony will be used as an educational tool for the Cadette Girl Scout Troop as well as guests in attendance in the proper, and honorable, procedure of flag replacement and disposal. Refreshments will be served inside The Blount Mansion Visitors Center following the ceremony. The ceremony is free to the public, and all are invited to attend and encouraged to take a tour of the historic Blount Mansion following the ceremony where a fifteen star and fifteen stripe flag from 1795 is on display.

In its brief history, the Ewing Gallery of Art & Architecture at The University of Tennessee has strived to acquire works of art and architecture for the educational benefits of our students and faculty and for the enrichment of the Knoxville and East Tennessee communities.

This summer the Ewing Gallery will be organizing a permanent collection exhibition focusing on our abstract art.

Abstract works from the permanent collection will be on display from June 12 - July 12.
