The East Tennessee History Center: Casual Basket Sundays

In conjunction with the new feature exhibition, Woven of Wood: East Tennessee Baskets, 1880-1940, the East Tennessee Historical Society will be holding a series of “Casual Basket Sundays” and special demonstrations by members of the Foothills Craft Guild. Guests are invited to bring their baskets, share stories, and meet with basket experts. Programs include:
April 25-27, Friday and Saturday - 10:00 am-4:00 pm, Sunday - 1:00-5:00 pm
Basket Making Demonstrations
There will be basket making demonstrations from members of the Foothills Crafts Guild on the porch and front lobby of the East Tennessee History Center. Featured artists include Karen Kenst, Sue Mowen, Judy and Virgil Davis, Bill Alexander, and Jim Gentry.
April 27, 2:00-4:00, A United States show and tell gathering
Collectors will show their favorite or unusual baskets made roughly from 1880-1940, regardless of where in the United States they were made. Examples are likely to be seen from Pennsylvania, Virginia, North and South Carolina, Kentucky, Missouri, and Middle Tennessee, as well as Native American. Each collector will tell something about his basket, either why it is a favorite or something of its history. There will also be basket demonstrations by featured basket maker Billy Sims and Sue Mowen and Bill Alexander from the Foothills Craft Guild.
May 11, beginning at 2:00, Mother’s Day Gallery Tours
Interactive gallery tours of the East Tennessee Historical Society’s feature exhibit Woven of Wood lead by guest curator Carole Carpenter Wahler. Museum visitors will learn about baskets and their features and are welcome to join in at any time.
May 18, 2:00-4:00, Casual Basket Sunday- A world wide show and tell gathering
Collectors will show baskets made anywhere in the world, at any time, and of any materials. Examples are likely to be seen from Australia, Africa, Philippines, England, and China, as well as baskets made in Tennessee from the middle of the 20th century to the present. Each collector will tell something about his basket, either why it is a favorite or something of its history. A gallery tour of Woven of Wood will take place immediately following the show and tell gathering.

McClung Museum: Civil War Lecture Series: Grand Divisions - Tennessee's Civial War in the First Year

The McClung Museum’s 4th annual Civil War Lecture series will be held on the last Sunday of each month, January – April 2014 at 2 pm in the McClung Museum Auditorium. This month’s lecture, will be given by Aaron Astor, PhD, History Professor, Maryville College. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Special guests Kip Moore and Kacey Musgraves are currently out with the trio and will continue on to the first newly announced summer shows. Lady A will also welcome a combination of Billy Currington, David Nail and Joe Nichols for the remaining new tour dates.

Tennessee Theatre: Nickel Creek

Beginning as bluegrass child prodigies, Nickel Creek grew into an acoustic band known for its breadth of musical influences—from Bach to Radiohead—and its surprisingly large sound on stage. The band is getting back together on Sunday, April 27.

The Historic Fourth and Gill Neighborhood 2014 Tour of Homes

The Historic Fourth and Gill neighborhood celebrates the 2014 Tour of Homes on Sunday, April 27 from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00p.m.
The Tour of Homes invites guests to stroll through one of Knoxville's premier historic
districts and to step inside twelve gracious homes and churches from another era.
The tour, a Featured Event of the Dogwood Arts Festival, includes century-old homes
as well as the Brownlow Lofts, a lovely old school that has been renovated into
condos, and a pottery and art studio in a converted Tudor church. The tour begins at
the stately Central United Methodist Church, a beautiful example of Gothic Revival architecture.
For those desiring a more leisurely tour, a red trolley bus, hosted by a tour guide,
will be driving the tour route.
Advance tickets are $10 per person (children under 12 are admitted free) and may be purchased at Three Rivers Market, 1100 N. Central Street, three weeks prior to the tour and on the Fourth and Gill website at www.fourthandgill.org. Tickets purchased the day of the event are $12 at the Central United Methodist Church, 201 3rd Avenue, during event hours until 5:00 p.m. the day of the tour.

Marble City Opera: Opera, Food and Wine
Marble City Opera presents an exciting evening of appetizers, wine and a taste of opera! The musical portion of the evening will start off with soprano, Noelle Harb singing Bernstein’s La Bonne Cuisine. Followed by Bon appétit, sung and performed by mezzo-soprano, Martha Prewitt is a delightful 20 min comic opera portraying Julia Child baking a chocolate cake, with music by Lee Hoiby and libretto by Julia Child herself. Tickets, if available, will be sold at the door for $50.

Tennessee Stage Company: Shakespeare Outloud

It’s time once again for Shakespeare Outloud! Our next reading is nearly upon us. On Sunday, April 27, we’ll read Hamlet at 2:00 pm in the Lawson McGee Library downtown. A few parts will be cast ahead of time and a number of parts will be left open to be grabbed up the day of the reading. If you have a strong interest and want to get signed up ahead of time for a role please get in touch with me either by return e-mail, or by phone at 546-4280.

We welcome all voices, all dialects. We read the plays for the joy of reading them, to hear and discover more about the plays and to further help people discover and appreciate these marvelous plays. We’d love you to be part of it.
You may come and grab a script and take part in the reading or you can come and participate as an audience member. Jennifer Horn will provide a brief reference for the play – what we call Shakesology! And we can talk about our thoughts about the play afterwards. It’s free and it’s fun. We hope to see you!

4th Annual Farragut Art in the Park

he Farragut Business Alliance has once again partnered with the Town of Farragut and Dogwood Arts Festival to host the 4th Annual Farragut Art in the Park, presented by TDS. It is a plein air event, with two days of painting or photography on location, followed by a gallery reception and sale. Art for Kids! will be back again this year as well and new youth competition categories have been added.
The paint-out/shooting dates are Saturday and Sunday, April 26-27, 2014. The Gallery Reception and Sale is Friday, May 9th. The events will occur rain or shine.
Farragut Art in the Park culminates with a Gallery Reception & Art Sale at 7pm on Friday, May 9. Due to a generous partnership with The Pinnacle at Turkey Creek, it will be held in a new location this year, at 11483 Parkside Drive (in the space next to Men’s Warehouse). Hors d'oeuvres and desserts are complimentary and wine will be available for $3 per glass. The Knoxville Bella Corda, an Allied Music Instructors youth acoustic guitar ensemble, will provide entertainment. Finally, Best of Show, First Place and Second Place paintings and photographs (judged separately) will be awarded cash prizes. Presenting Sponsor’s Choice will also be named.
