Knoxville Children's Theatre: Charlie & the Chocolate Factory

  • June 10, 2016 — June 26, 2016

Category: Kids, family and Theatre

Knoxville Children’s Theatre will present “Charlie And the Chocolate Factory,” a live play for children and families, based on the classic novel by Roald Dahl. The play will be performed June 10 through 26, Thursdays and Fridays at 7 PM; Saturdays at 1 PM and 5 PM; Sundays at 3 PM.

Poor Charlie Bucket finds a Golden Ticket in his Wonka Chocolate Bar, sending him and his Grandpa on a magical tour of Willy Wonka’s renowned chocolate factory. One by one, the other children on the tour break the rules, but if Charlie survives the journey, he may find an even greater reward.

The play is performed by 24 talented young actors, from ages 8 to 16. Charlie Bucket will be played by Cody Chaffins, a KCT veteran who has given hilariously comic performances in The Wind In The Willows and Alice’s Rumpus In Wonderland over the past year. Callie Dowd will play the mad inventor Willy Wonka, and Keegan Stump performs the role of Grandpa Joe. The play is directed by recent West High graduate, A. J. Tierney, assisted by Caroline Dyer, a junior at South-Doyle High. Stage management duties are carried out by Kennis Van Dyke, a freshman at L&N STEM Academy. Emma Campbell, a freshman at Pellissippi State, is the staff’s Production Manager.

Encore Theatrical Company: "Follies"

  • June 10, 2016 — June 26, 2016

Category: Music and Theatre

Encore Theatrical Company will present Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman’s “Follies” June 10-26. A true theatrical event, this legendary masterpiece is surreal, sophisticated, compelling, entertaining and epic in scope. The story takes place in 1971. The Weismann Theater, home to the Weismann Follies since 1918, is about to be torn down. Dimitri Weismann, the impresario who produced the shows, is giving a party on the stage of the theatre and has invited all the living performers, along with their husbands and wives, to celebrate the nostalgia of the occasion. During the course of the party, we meet them all, but the action chiefly involves two chorus girls from the 1941 Follies who were best friends and haven’t seen each other since. The reunion of ex-Follies performers in the crumbling theatre sets the stage for a parade of brilliant pastiche numbers written by Stephen Sondheim, including "Losing My Mind," "I'm Still Here," and "Broadway Baby."

Performances of “Follies” are at Walters State Community College, located at 500 S. Davy Crockett Parkway in Morristown. Evening performances are on June 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25 at 8:00 p.m. with matinee performances on June 12, 19, 25, and 26 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are on sale and can be purchased at www.etcplays.org or by calling 423-318-8331.

UT Downtown Gallery: Through The Lens of Ed Westcott

Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event

Opening Reception, Friday, June 3, 5-9pm - This event is free and open to the public. Mr. Westcott will be in attendance from 6:30 - 8:30pm, June 3. At 7:00pm, Baldwin Lee, Professor of Art, Emeritus, University of Tennessee, gives a talk about the work in our current exhibition.

JOIN US FOR A SECOND RECEPTION ON Friday, August 5th, 5-9pm at the UT Downtown Gallery - THIS IS THE FINAL FIRST FRIDAY TO SEE THIS EXHIBITION!

In 1942, the Army Corps of Engineers relocated James Edward Westcott to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and assigned him the task of official photographer for the Manhattan Project - a massive wartime effort to produce the first atomic bomb. As secrecy of the project was paramount, the "atomic" city was fenced, and communication with the outside world was limited. What is more, no cameras were allowed inside its boundaries. Thus, Westcott became not only the official photographer for the Manhattan Project, but he also became the sole photographer of the social and recreational events of Oak Ridge. It is only through Westcott's photographs that the visual history of Oak Ridge can be appreciated.

This exhibition includes over 50 photographs that were originally exhibited at the UT Downtown Gallery in the summer of 2005, which was the first exhibition of Westcott's photographs as works of art credited to his name outside of Oak Ridge. Now, we are pleased to announce the 2016 exhibition of Westcott's photographs, with additional works not previously shown in the 2005 exhibit.

Free admission! UT Downtown Gallery, 106 S. Gay St, Knoxville, TN 37902. Summer hours: R-F 11-6, Sat 10-3. Information: 865-673-0802, http://web.utk.edu/~downtown

Complimentary treats from Wild Love Bakehouse will be provided.

Brian Murray is a local photographer who has had prints in several exhibits including the Arts In The Airport, Dogwood Arts Fine Art Exhibition, National Juried Photo Exhibit at the Emporium, and the Mayor's office. Brian is primarily known for his photos of local landmarks and historic buildings but he enjoys taking pictures of anything and everything in between. Brian's passion is for abstract or minimalist style of photos. Brian often strives to create images that focus on lines, shapes, or textures. Brian's June exhibit will reflect his changed perspective on photography. Last year Brian finally got an Instagram account a year ago, which has inspired Brian to compose his images in a square format. Each piece that Brian has selected for his June exhibit is an image that he personally likes and has taken over the past year for his Instagram account. Brian is a big fan of vinyl and imagines each piece as an album cover; each one with its own story to tell. http://bmurrayphoto.yolasite.com/
