National Cancer Survivors Day Presentation by Artist/Author Jody Sims

  • June 5, 2016
  • 2 PM

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Festivals, special events, Free event and Literature, spoken word, writing

Knoxville resident, Jody Sims, artist/author of the award winning book Soul Provider: Conversations With My Cat, will present at National Cancer Survivors Day event at Historic Southern Railway Station. National Cancer Survivors Day started 29 years ago as a way to recognize and support people living with cancer. The day is observed in many different ways around the U.S. and in 18 other countries. There are nearly 14.5 million children and adults with a history of cancer living today in the United States. “Given that one in three Americans will face a cancer diagnosis at some point in their lives, living with cancer is a topic that touches all of us,” says Jody.

“As a cancer survivor, your relationship to everyone around you changes. You may find yourself cutting off relationships that aren't working. Or you may want to change jobs or move away because you’ve had this life-changing experience. Additionally, once I finished treatment, people assumed I was fine. I was often told, ‘You look great, you’ve got your hair back, so now you can just get on with your life.’ But it wasn’t that easy. Many of us are not prepared for the fact that everything isn’t going to be what it was.”

In her book, Sims shares excerpts from her personal journal, along with 20 paintings of her cat’s face, to take the reader through each stage of healing as she found her way through devastating loss, grief and survival. Jody presents an extraordinary visual and honest account of her experience with
loss, filled with inspiration from someone who forged it for herself. Soul Provider has been described as “both simple and deep; delightful and desperate; clever and beautiful; inviting the reader to share a dynamic tug-of-war between courage and surrender.” The book won the Nautilus Book Award in 2014.

Jody grew up in a small farming community in western Illinois. After college, she moved to San Diego, CA and worked for many years for the Girl Scouts. She was their Chief Advancement Officer when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012. Recently, Jody moved to Knoxville, TN where she is a full time artist and writer. Survivorship came at a psychological price, for Jody. The first Sunday of June is her annual reminder that she survived and an opportunity to share her story with others, in hopes that it may serve as a catalyst for others’ healing. Jody’s favorite saying is, “Today is a new day and a chance to begin again.” She’s not the same person who entered the storm, but that’s what the storm was all about, right?

Blue Slip Winery wine will be available for purchase. Historic Southern Railway Station, 306 West Depot Ave., Knoxville, TN. For more information visit www.jodysims.com, or contact 619-210-4587 or jody@jodysims.com.

Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event

Bliss Home is pleased to present Knoxville photographer Brian Murray for June First Friday! Bliss Home, located at 29 Market Square, will host an opening reception on Friday, June 3rd from 6pm to 9pm and another reception on Friday, July 1st from 6pm to 9pm. Complimentary treats from Wild Love Bakehouse will be provided.

Brian Murray is a local photographer who has had prints in several exhibits including the Arts In The Airport, Dogwood Arts Fine Art Exhibition, National Juried Photo Exhibit at the Emporium, and the Mayor's office. Brian is primarily known for his photos of local landmarks and historic buildings but he enjoys taking pictures of anything and everything in between. Brian's passion is for abstract or minimalist style of photos. Brian often strives to create images that focus on lines, shapes, or textures. Brian's June exhibit will reflect his changed perspective on photography. Last year Brian finally got an Instagram account a year ago, which has inspired Brian to compose his images in a square format. Each piece that Brian has selected for his June exhibit is an image that he personally likes and has taken over the past year for his Instagram account. Brian is a big fan of vinyl and imagines each piece as an album cover; each one with its own story to tell. http://bmurrayphoto.yolasite.com/
