Carpetbag Theatre's Youth Theatre Festival 2016
Category: Festivals, special events, Kids, family and Theatre
This summer, we are extremely excited to bring back our Youth Theatre Festival. In light of recent tragedies in our community, we realize the need for our young people to have a place and a method to positively express themselves. Our Youth Theatre Festival will feature local and national acts for entertainment, as well as a series of workshops for educational purposes. This year, as a part of our partnership with the National Performance Network, we will be lucky enough to feature Orisirisi African Folklore from Orlando, Florida. Alongside Orisirisi, you’ll see performances from Kuumba Watoto Dance and Drum Troupe, Poetry from King Shakur, DJ Wigs, Hip-Hop from J-Bush, Divine Urban Expressions Dance Troupe and many more.
Our featured artist, Orisirisi, was created in 1986 with the expressed purpose of sharing both the beauty and poignancy of African life and culture. Since their inception Orisirisi African Folklore has captured the imagination of people the world over, with its unique brand of African folkloric performances and education programs, and Don and Tutu proudly offer Orisirisi to you, our audience.
Once the performers have taken the stage, we’ll give each young person the opportunity to learn how to do what they saw on stage. Workshops will be offered for Dance, Poetry, Hip-Hop, Storytelling, Arts & Crafts and more. If you have any questions or have a group of young people who would like to participate in the Youth Theatre Festival, please contact our Youth Program Director, Joshua Outsey, at 865-544-0447.

Art a la Carte, the Art Center's brown bag luncheon and learning series, meets the fourth Friday in each month at 12 noon. While programs in the series may include artist or gallery talks, primarily we use films. Films focus on art history, museum collections, interviews with and/or demonstrations by various artisits, and the creative muse or spirit. Programs are free and open to the public.
On June 24 we will continue the series "Understanding Art: Baroque to Rococco" by famed art critic, Waldemar Januszczak, which we began in February. Mr. Januszczak's insightful, yet often acerbic wt follows these very powerful aesthetics from their heyday to influences in the ensuing years that continue to reverberate today. The June meeting will take place on the 24th and will continue this study.
The Art Center will provide coffee and/or tea. Participants are encouraged to bring and enjoy your lunch while we learn. The films in the "Understanding Art" series are usually 60 minutes or slightly longer.

Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra Association: Summer String Camp Performance
Category: Kids, family and Music
Next week, a record-breaking 224 students will gather at Hardin Valley Academy to rehearse with KSO musicians and public school music specialists, practice their string instruments and perform in concert together on Friday, June 24 at 2:30 p.m. at the Hardin Valley Auditorium, the final day of camp.
“These young musicians work with coaches throughout the week to rehearse, said Kathy Hart, Manager of the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra (KSYO) and founder of String Camp. “This year, the theme is “That’s Entertainment!” and the kids will play music from Broadway, TV and film scores. String Camp combines fun with rehearsal and results in a fantastic group performance at the end of the week. 73 of the 224 kids are brand new to string camp this year and have never performed with the KSYO. It is always a treat to see the progress of these young musicians as they hone their skills and fall deeper in love with music.”

Community Television of Knoxville: Summer Animation Workshop
Category: Classes, workshops and Kids, family
Community Television of Knoxville is pleased to announce our 2016 Summer Animation Workshop. This is an intense week of motion picture making! Participants will learn the basics of stop-motion, cut and paste, hand drawn, claymation and other types of animation. They will complete a series of short animations with the opportunity to storyboard and create their own animated vignette!
Participants must come prepared to work. It should be noted that one second of animation is created using twenty four still images. Animation is extremely time consuming and the very nature of this process involves work. If the student views long periods of time cutting, molding, drawing, and other necessary steps as daunting, this may not be a workshop for them. On the other hand, if the student sees the reward in the final product of this type of creation, then this is a perfect workshop for them!
The 5-day workshop will be offered three times this summer. Lunch is included. A $25 Materials Fee must be paid for each participant. Space is limited to 8 students per session.
June 20-24 (Grades 6 – 8; Mon-Fri, 9 am sharp – 3 pm sharp)
July 11-15 (Grades 9 – 12; Mon-Fri, 9 am sharp – 3 pm sharp)
Space is limited! Register today at ctvknox.org/animation/
