Downtown Newport Artscapes, Inc Announces Upcoming Art Exhibit by Rhenda Clevenger

Downtown Newport Artscapes Inc. is announcing an upcoming meet and greet with local artist Rhenda Clevenger. A professional artist, she has spent the last two decades making a living from her unique creations.
She practices her techniques and style on various surfaces, such as glass, wood, steel and canvas while using mixed media involving acrylic or oil. She implements pencil, ink, or pastels until she has attained the desired results.
Clevenger has pursued educational training as a vet tech, C.A.D. and in wildlife management and forestry, so it is safe to say she had diverse interests. She believes her greatest resource would be her talents, for which she is grateful.
Clevenger offers art classes and will commission an art project on request. For information, she can be contacted at (423) 237-9561. Her artwork is on display at Newport Printing and Office Supplies throughout the month of June.
A casual artist reception will honor Clevenger and her work on June 22 from noon to 3 p.m. at Newport Printing & Office Supplies, 315 East Broadway. The reception is free and open to the public. Everyone is encouraged to come by to meet the artist and consider purchasing some of her original artwork during the exhibition.

Brides- and grooms-to-be are invited to attend Knoxville’s inaugural The Big Fake Wedding. This bridal show alternative in the form of a big, fake wedding takes place on Thursday, June 9, at 7:00 PM at The Emporium Center, 100 S. Gay Street, in downtown Knoxville. “Wedding guests” are brides- and grooms-to-be who enjoy an emotional vow renewal ceremony, a tasty cocktail-style dinner, and a dance-party reception while experiencing local wedding vendors in action. Local married couple Katy and Casey Oliver will use the event to renew their wedding vows. Those attending will experience a perfectly planned “wedding” and have the opportunity to meet the vendors behind the scene. The evening will include an emotional “wedding” ceremony encouraging strong marriages, a delectable catered cocktail-style dinner by Bradford Catered Events, and a reception with Hall Napa Valley wine, dancing and dessert. The event will showcase local wedding vendors such as Event Rentals by Rothchild, Dale’s Fried Pies, Heather Faulkner Photography, Napping Cat Flower Farm, Whitney Evans Beauty, and Robinson Paper Co.

Credited for “changing the way future brides and grooms prepare to celebrate happily ever after” by The TODAY Show, The Big Fake Wedding has proved to be an innovative alternative to a trade-show style wedding expo. While The Big Fake Wedding is in the business of creating fake weddings, they continue to work towards their very real goals of promoting small businesses, inspiring brides and grooms, and encouraging solid marriages.

The Emporium Center is Knoxville’s first true arts center, which re-opened following renovations in 2004. The flexible use space houses multiple art galleries showcasing local and regional artists, the administrative offices of the Arts & Culture Alliance, and offices for seven other arts and cultural organizations. Additionally, the building houses rehearsal, classroom and meeting space. The Oak Ridge Civic Music Association is pleased to present world-renowned bassist Edgar Meyer, and his son, violinist George Meyer, in an intimate performance on Thursday, June 9, 2016 at 7:30 PM at the First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge.

In demand as both a performer and a composer, Oak Ridge native Edgar Meyer has formed a role in the music world unlike any other. Hailed by The New Yorker as “…the most remarkable virtuoso in the relatively un-chronicled history of his instrument”, Mr. Meyer’s unparalleled technique and musicianship in combination with his gift for composition have brought him to the fore, where he is appreciated by a vast, varied audience. His uniqueness in the field was recognized by a MacArthur Award in 2002.

Mr. Meyer began studying bass at the age of five under the instruction of his father and continued further to study with Stuart Sankey. In 1994 he received the Avery Fisher Career Grant and in 2000 became the only bassist to receive the Avery Fisher Prize. Currently, he is Visiting Professor of Double Bass at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.

The 2016 nief-norf Summer Festival (nnSF) returns to Knoxville featuring 8 concerts, 9 lectures, and 10 world premieres! The nief-norf Summer Festival (nnSF) is an interdisciplinary summer music festival, which brings together dozens of performers, composers, and scholars to collaborate on the performance, creation, and discussion of contemporary solo and chamber music. The nnSF is held in the beautiful facilities of the University of Tennessee’s Haslam Music Center (Knoxville,
TN) and presents inspired and devoted performances of modern music, aiming to encourage both appreciation and support for live music and contemporary art.

Since its inception in the summer of 2011, the festival’s performance, composition, and research seminars have attracted undergraduates, graduates, and professionals from institutions across the United States and abroad. Each summer, these performance fellows present some of the most challenging and boundary-pushing contemporary music, including world premieres of works by composer fellows at the nief-norf Summer Festival. In addition to concerts and lectures at the University of Tennessee, the festival is excited to offer events at various locations throughout Knoxville.

Unless otherwise noted, all events occur in UT’s Sandra G. Powell Recital Hall and tickets are $10 advance online / $15 door. Community Television of Knoxville is pleased to announce our 2016 Summer Animation Workshop. This is an intense week of motion picture making! Participants will learn the basics of stop-motion, cut and paste, hand drawn, claymation and other types of animation. They will complete a series of short animations with the opportunity to storyboard and create their own animated vignette!

Participants must come prepared to work. It should be noted that one second of animation is created using twenty four still images. Animation is extremely time consuming and the very nature of this process involves work. If the student views long periods of time cutting, molding, drawing, and other necessary steps as daunting, this may not be a workshop for them. On the other hand, if the student sees the reward in the final product of this type of creation, then this is a perfect workshop for them!

The 5-day workshop will be offered three times this summer. Lunch is included. A $25 Materials Fee must be paid for each participant. Space is limited to 8 students per session.

In 1942, the Army Corps of Engineers relocated James Edward Westcott to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and assigned him the task of official photographer for the Manhattan Project - a massive wartime effort to produce the first atomic bomb. As secrecy of the project was paramount, the "atomic" city was fenced, and communication with the outside world was limited. What is more, no cameras were allowed inside its boundaries. Thus, Westcott became not only the official photographer for the Manhattan Project, but he also became the sole photographer of the social and recreational events of Oak Ridge. It is only through Westcott's photographs that the visual history of Oak Ridge can be appreciated.

This exhibition includes over 50 photographs that were originally exhibited at the UT Downtown Gallery in the summer of 2005, which was the first exhibition of Westcott's photographs as works of art credited to his name outside of Oak Ridge. Now, we are pleased to announce the 2016 exhibition of Westcott's photographs, with additional works not previously shown in the 2005 exhibit.
