Sam Houston was a self taught man and in keeping with his love of learning, the summer program on Tuesdays will promote literacy and lifelong learning in the community. On June 21 Keep Blount Beautiful will provide a program on recycling.
Games, crafts and more will be available from 2:30-3 p.m. each Tuesday, as well. Schoolhouse Tuesdays are for all ages. Admission is free for children and $3 for adults. Pre-registration is not required.

The East Tennessee Community Design Center (ETCDC) announces the launch the first of an informal series of conversations about community design, called Fryer Talks. The inaugural event will be held from at the former Design Center headquarters, 1522 Highland Ave. in Fort Sanders.

“These talks will be periodic events, hosted by ETCDC, to engage the community in exploring relevant design issues in our region, and to remember a key founder, Gideon Fryer, who loved exploring ideas,” said Wayne Blasius, Design Center executive director. Knoxville Mercury author and community historian Jack Neely will give a short talk about Gideon and his impact on the community. Fryer Talks will be held at various venues, will focus on topics of interest on the day they occur, will be informal, and have an air of both academics and frivolity that Gideon might have enjoyed. Over time, the talks are intended to engage East Tennesseans in thoughtful, passionate, free and open-minded conversations about design issues that matter,” Blasius said.

Bike Walk Knoxville (BWK) is hosting four events in the summer of 2016 where community members can tour the four corners of Knoxville neighborhoods (by bike or on foot) and meet with elected officials. This year’s “Ride with Elected Officials” is adding the “W”(alk) in BWK to include opportunities for pedestrians and families to tour Knoxville sites on foot. The first event will be a walking tour of Bearden. Participants should meet at Bearden Beer Market, 4524 Kingston Pike, and expect an hour tour of all of the wonderful things happening in downtown Bearden. Expect discussions of walkability, bikeability and Knoxville’s premier new mixed use development. This event is a wonderful opportunity to meet with City and County elected officials and have a candid dialogue about the issues that matter to you most. The walk will begin and end at Bearden Beer Market at 6pm June 14th with an opportunity for beverages and lively discussion afterward.

The 2017 nief-norf Summer Festival (nnSF) returns to Knoxville featuring concerts, lectures, and world premieres! The nief-norf Summer Festival (nnSF) is an interdisciplinary summer music festival, which brings together dozens of performers, composers, and scholars to collaborate on the performance, creation, and discussion of contemporary solo and chamber music. The nnSF is held in the beautiful facilities of the University of Tennessee’s Haslam Music Center (Knoxville, TN) and presents inspired and devoted performances of modern music, aiming to encourage both appreciation and support for live music and contemporary art.

Since its inception in the summer of 2011, the festival’s performance, composition, and research seminars have attracted undergraduates, graduates, and professionals from institutions across the United States and abroad. Each summer, these performance fellows present some of the most challenging and boundary-pushing contemporary music, including world premieres of works by composer fellows at the nief-norf Summer Festival. In addition to concerts and lectures at the University of Tennessee, the festival is excited to offer events at various locations throughout Knoxville.

Mac Goodwin has had a love of trees most of his life. He began photographing them at some point in the 1970s and continues doing so today. A collection of some of his photographs, Trees by Mac: 1970-2016, will be at The Birdhouse Bird Feeder Gallery at 4th and Gill in Knoxville. The work will be on exhibit for the month of June with a selection of landscape paintings by Dan DeRidder. The opening reception is on June 10th, 6-9 pm. Encore Theatrical Company will present Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman’s “Follies” June 10-26. A true theatrical event, this legendary masterpiece is surreal, sophisticated, compelling, entertaining and epic in scope. The story takes place in 1971. The Weismann Theater, home to the Weismann Follies since 1918, is about to be torn down. Dimitri Weismann, the impresario who produced the shows, is giving a party on the stage of the theatre and has invited all the living performers, along with their husbands and wives, to celebrate the nostalgia of the occasion. During the course of the party, we meet them all, but the action chiefly involves two chorus girls from the 1941 Follies who were best friends and haven’t seen each other since. The reunion of ex-Follies performers in the crumbling theatre sets the stage for a parade of brilliant pastiche numbers written by Stephen Sondheim, including "Losing My Mind," "I'm Still Here," and "Broadway Baby."

Performances of “Follies” are at Walters State Community College, located at 500 S. Davy Crockett Parkway in Morristown. Evening performances are on June 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25 at 8:00 p.m. with matinee performances on June 12, 19, 25, and 26 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are on sale and can be purchased at www.etcplays.org or by calling 423-318-8331.

Downtown Newport Artscapes, Inc Announces Upcoming Art Exhibit by Rhenda Clevenger

Downtown Newport Artscapes Inc. is announcing an upcoming meet and greet with local artist Rhenda Clevenger. A professional artist, she has spent the last two decades making a living from her unique creations.
She practices her techniques and style on various surfaces, such as glass, wood, steel and canvas while using mixed media involving acrylic or oil. She implements pencil, ink, or pastels until she has attained the desired results.
Clevenger has pursued educational training as a vet tech, C.A.D. and in wildlife management and forestry, so it is safe to say she had diverse interests. She believes her greatest resource would be her talents, for which she is grateful.
Clevenger offers art classes and will commission an art project on request. For information, she can be contacted at (423) 237-9561. Her artwork is on display at Newport Printing and Office Supplies throughout the month of June.
A casual artist reception will honor Clevenger and her work on June 22 from noon to 3 p.m. at Newport Printing & Office Supplies, 315 East Broadway. The reception is free and open to the public. Everyone is encouraged to come by to meet the artist and consider purchasing some of her original artwork during the exhibition.
