Sundress Academy for the Arts Presents OUTSpoken: A Review of LGBTQ+ Voices and Stories
Category: Literature, spoken word, writing
Saturday, June 25, 2016
8:00PM. - 10:00PM
What is it like to love a region that often refuses to love you back? For many Southern, LGBTQ+ writers, creating art while witnessing its governments' focus on preserving antiquated views of sex and gender diversity can be a life-long battle.
That’s why, on June 25th, 2016, Sundress Academy for the Arts (SAFTA) is hosting its third annual OUTSpoken Review, a night when Knoxville’s LGBTQ+ community can give voice to their stories and experiences. Over the course of the year, East Tennessee writers have been translating their unique experiences into poems, plays, narratives, and other literary forms. Now, these pieces will be performed in a series of staged readings to promote the celebration of sex and gender diversity in East Tennessee and beyond.
This year’s performances will be held at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church and will include pieces composed by local writers Emily Capettini, Adam Crandall, Madi Mansouri, Jeff Gallaher, Erin Elizabeth Smith as well as pieces from our 2016 national competition. Tickets are $15 in advance and $17 at the door. A portion of all proceeds will go to Project ACT/Positively Living which serves vulnerable groups struggling to survive the challenges created by HIV/AIDS, homelessness, mental illness, addiction, and disabilities.
