Bijou Theatre: An Evening with Doris Kearns Goodwin

The East Tennessee Historical Society (ETHS) and the Lincoln Memorial University Duncan School of Law (LMU Law) have joined forces to bring world renowned presidential historian, public speaker and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin to Knoxville on Tuesday, April 25, 2017. Goodwin will present a community lecture at 7:30 p.m. at the historic Bijou Theatre. The author‘s presentation will be on her award-winning book, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, an epic tome that illuminates Lincoln‘s skills as political operative during the most trying time in our nation‘s history. Goodwin‘s Team of Rivals was also the basis of director Steven Spielberg‘s film Lincoln, which earned 12 Academy Award nominations.
Goodwin is the author of six critically acclaimed and The New York Times bestselling books, including her most recent, The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism. Spielberg‘s DreamWorks Studios has also acquired the film and television rights to the book. She was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in history for No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in World War II. Goodwin‘s The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys was adapted into an award-winning television miniseries that aired on ABC. In 2015, to celebrate the 50th anniversaries of many of President Lyndon Johnson‘s domestic accomplishments, Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream was released in e-book format for the first time. Goodwin has made many appearances on television, where she is frequently on NBC, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, CNN, The Charlie Rose Show and Meet the Press. She has also made appearances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and has even been animated for an appearance on The Simpsons.

Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church: Art Exhibit by COMMA

COMMA (COMe Make Art) is a plein air art group that has met weekly in the summer at University of Tennessee Gardens since 2004. Founders were art teachers Gay Nell Gray and Cheri Jorgenson. They are joined in this exhibit by members and retired art teachers Judy Jorden, Shelley Mangold and Owen Weston; current art teachers Caitlyn Seidler and Jackie Wright; and teaching artist Nancy Campbell. COMMA members' artwork is either created in or inspired by images from the gardens. Each artist works in a preferred medium, whether color pencil, pastel, watercolor, acrylics, photography, clay or mixed media. Some work is created on site in the gardens, and some is created in the studio using sketches or images from the gardens. The artists are inspired by the beauty and diversity of the UT Gardens and the friendship and camaraderie they share.

Encore Theatrical Company: Time Stands Still

Encore Theatrical Company is proud to present the powerful and compelling drama “Time Stands Still.” Written by Donald Margulies, this play will be presented for two weekends only April 21-30 at the Rose Center.
“Time Stands Still” tells the story of Sarah, a war photojournalist, and James, a foreign correspondent. Both are trying to find happiness in a world that seems to have gone crazy. Theirs is a partnership based on telling the toughest stories and making a difference in the world through their work. But when their own story takes a sudden turn, the adventurous couple confronts the prospect of a more conventional life.
After surviving a roadside bomb in a war-torn country, Sarah, a returns home to recuperate, yet eager to return to work. James begins to question their dangerous occupations and ponders a more conventional life for them. His life-changing questions are deepened when their long-time editor and friend, Richard, introduces his fiancé, a decidedly younger woman who helps Richard see the world anew. Will Sarah acquiesce, lowering her camera in order to face the world?

Performances of “Time Stands Still” run for two weekends April 21-30. Evening performances are April 21, 22, 28, and 29 at 8:00 p.m. and matinees on April 23 and 30 at 2:00 p.m. There will be a special preview performance on Thursday, April 20 which will be “Pay What You Can” night beginning at 8:00 p.m. There will also be a special talkback session with the cast following the first matinee on April 23.
All performances will be held at the Rose Center, located at 442 W. Second North Street in Morristown. There will be bar service at the evening performances, and doors open 45 minutes before the performance.

Arrowmont: Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage "Artist of the Year" Mary Ruden

Arrowmont invites you to view works by Mary Ruden – The Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage “Artist of the Year." Join us for the opening reception on April 12, 5:30-7 PM. Bring your family and friends and enjoy an evening of art, live music and refreshments. Live music will be performed by “Pistol Creek Catch of the Day” – a local bluegrass band comprised of Edward Harper, Bill Cabage and Carl Gombert. Admission is free.
The exhibition showcases Mary Ruden’s sculptures, prints and drawings depicting natural subjects such as orchids, wildflowers and butterflies. Her work is inspired by her Welsh roots and her travels to Europe. The exhibition is on view in the Geoffrey A. Wolpert Gallery. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Mary Ruden, sculptor and mixed-media artist, creates outdoor and collectible art. She received her BFA from University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida and has taught art and design classes for over eight years. Her work is displayed in two state parks, various government buildings and at the U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington, D.C. to honor the centennial anniversary of the National Park Service. Mary is an active member of the Knoxville Arts and Culture Alliance and exhibits her work throughout the southeastern United States. On Friday, April 7, from 5 - 7 p.m., The Art Guild at Fairfield Glade will host a special Opening Reception for the Spring Bounty Art Show. Progressive Savings Bank is sponsoring this show and providing the awards. This show is special because the viewers will cast their votes for their favorite artworks beginning on April 7 and ending on April 28. Winners will then be announced to the public.
The Opening Reception will feature a large assortment of hors d’oeuvres and wine, soda, and water to attendees. This event is free and open to the public. The PCAC is a great place to shop for art including paintings, photographs, pottery, jewelry, wood carvings, and greeting cards.
