Circle Modern Dance presents Layer by Layer, an evening of exploration and commentary through movement, is set for Thursday, April 27th at 7pm, Friday, April 28th at 7pm, and Saturday, April 29th at 3 and 7 pm, at Modern Studio, 109 W Anderson Ave, Knoxville, TN 37917.

Made possible by a grant from the East Tennessee Foundation, Layer by Layer honors Circle Modern Dance’s (CMD) past 26 years while looking forward to many more years of dancing. Throughout the evening, CMD core dancers and guest performers will explore vulnerability, love, and loss. Dances include works from core dancers Amelia Breed, Kat Milligan, Callie Minnich, Darby O’Connor and Sarah Whitaker, as well as the debut of a performance piece set by Kim Matibag, a co-founder of CMD.

Layer by Layer is an accumulation of months of exploration into overarching ideas that influence our daily lives and how we as humans react to them. According to Callie Minnich, one of the directors of the show, “Layer by Layer provides an opportunity for artists and audience members to find connections in shared experiences. We at CMD look forward to the chance to share our art with the community and we thoroughly enjoy giving dancers in our area the chance to join us on stage!”

The Guild of the Knoxville Museum of Art (KMA) presents Artists on Location, A Plein Air Painting Event. Artists in all media have an opportunity to showcase their talents by painting outdoors over several days at sites in and around scenic Knoxville. The public is invited to watch artist as they work throughout the week. Artists will show and sell the resulting work at the KMA during Artists on Location, A Plein Air Painting Exhibition, Awards Reception and Art Sale on April 29, 6:00-8:30 PM.

Encore Theatrical Company is proud to present the powerful and compelling drama “Time Stands Still.” Written by Donald Margulies, this play will be presented for two weekends only April 21-30 at the Rose Center.

“Time Stands Still” tells the story of Sarah, a war photojournalist, and James, a foreign correspondent. Both are trying to find happiness in a world that seems to have gone crazy. Theirs is a partnership based on telling the toughest stories and making a difference in the world through their work. But when their own story takes a sudden turn, the adventurous couple confronts the prospect of a more conventional life.

After surviving a roadside bomb in a war-torn country, Sarah, a returns home to recuperate, yet eager to return to work. James begins to question their dangerous occupations and ponders a more conventional life for them. His life-changing questions are deepened when their long-time editor and friend, Richard, introduces his fiancé, a decidedly younger woman who helps Richard see the world anew. Will Sarah acquiesce, lowering her camera in order to face the world?

Performances of “Time Stands Still” run for two weekends April 21-30. Evening performances are April 21, 22, 28, and 29 at 8:00 p.m. and matinees on April 23 and 30 at 2:00 p.m. There will be a special preview performance on Thursday, April 20 which will be “Pay What You Can” night beginning at 8:00 p.m. There will also be a special talkback session with the cast following the first matinee on April 23.

All performances will be held at the Rose Center, located at 442 W. Second North Street in Morristown. There will be bar service at the evening performances, and doors open 45 minutes before the performance.

Arrowmont invites you to view works by Mary Ruden – The Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage “Artist of the Year." Join us for the opening reception on April 12, 5:30-7 PM. The exhibition showcases Mary Ruden’s sculptures, prints and drawings depicting natural subjects such as orchids, wildflowers and butterflies. Her work is inspired by her Welsh roots and her travels to Europe. The exhibition is on view in the Geoffrey A. Wolpert Gallery. Mary Ruden, sculptor and mixed-media artist, creates outdoor and collectible art. She received her BFA from University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida and has taught art and design classes for over eight years. Her work is displayed in two state parks, various government buildings and at the U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington, D.C. to honor the centennial anniversary of the National Park Service. Mary is an active member of the Knoxville Arts and Culture Alliance and exhibits her work throughout the southeastern United States. On Friday, April 7, from 5 - 7 p.m., The Art Guild at Fairfield Glade will host a special Opening Reception for the Spring Bounty Art Show. Progressive Savings Bank is sponsoring this show and providing the awards. This show is special because the viewers will cast their votes for their favorite artworks beginning on April 7 and ending on April 28. Winners will then be announced to the public.

The Opening Reception will feature a large assortment of hors d’oeuvres and wine, soda, and water to attendees. This event is free and open to the public. The PCAC is a great place to shop for art including paintings, photographs, pottery, jewelry, wood carvings, and greeting cards.

Alison Saar weaves narratives relating to the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 into the mixed-media sculpture and paintings featured in “Breach.” Saar explores issues of gender, race, racism, and the African diaspora. She mines mythology, ritual, history, music, and her biracial heritage as sources for her work.

During a 2013 residency at the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans, Saar was dismayed to see how little had been done to rebuild African American communities devastated by Hurricane Katrina eight years earlier. Upon her return to Los Angeles, she began researching the histories of American floods and the effect on African Americans. The Great Mississippi River Flood of 1927, described as one of the worst natural river disasters in U.S. history, piqued her interest. Heavy rains resulted in the river breaching levees, creating a historic catastrophe that had a profound impact on the life of African Americans living in the Mississippi Delta. The flood exposed the conditions of poor African American sharecroppers and tenant farmers and their relationship with cotton plantation owners. The flood also resulted in social, cultural, federal policy, and political changes.

With water imagery woven throughout, “Breach” is the culmination of Saar’s creative research on American rivers and their historical relationship to the lives of African Americans. Through mixed media sculpture, paintings, and works on paper, she explores floods not only as natural phenomena; but also the complex interaction of social, cultural, and political factors associated with flooding and its aftermath.

Saar will also be giving a public lecture on her work on Thursday, April 6 at 7:30 PM in room 109 of the Art + Architecture Building.
