Knox County Public Library: Children's Festival of Reading
Category: Festivals, special events, Kids, family and Literature, spoken word, writing
Paddington Bear will be there! And so will Ferdinand the Bull. Join Knox County Public Library for its 14th annual Children’s Festival of Reading as it kicks off its Summer Library Clubs. On Saturday, May 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., World’s Fair Park will transform into a fairytale kingdom with cool cats, bespectacled bears, kindly bulls, and a ladybug girl ready to give out hugs and pose for selfies. The Festival is known for its rock star authors and illustrators, musicians, storytellers, puppets and much more. This year promises to blow it out of the park with its theme: Libraries Rock! The event is free and open to the public.
Kicking off the day, Dollywood’s Penguin Players will put one of Imagination Library’s most beloved books, Pretend by Jennifer Plecas, to song and dance on the main stage. Multi-talented Eric Litwin, the original creator of Pete the Cat as well as author of The Nuts and Groovy Joe will rock the stage with his music. Newbery Award Medalist Linda Sue Park, author of A Long Walk to Water and A Single Shard will be on hand to tell stories of her own and to sign books. Lori Nichols, author of an Imagination Library favorite Maple, will be joined by fellow author/illustrators Brooks Benjamin, Jessica Young and Corabel Shofner.
Families can also make arts and crafts with Miss Libby, learn to juggle with One World Circus and run experiments in the Science Village with Dr. Al Hazari and The Muse. Back this year, Bookitecture will challenge budding engineers to build a tower of books. And what’s a reading festival without puppets? Cattywampus Puppet Council will bring The Story of Ferdinand to life.
Summer reading programs help students retain their academic skills over the summer. Research shows that struggling students can lose as much as 1.5 years of academic progress between grades 1 and 6 if they don’t read on summer break. Furthermore, summer reading offers children and youth a chance to explore books that are of personal interest. Studies show that when readers are encouraged to choose their own books, they become stronger and more engaged readers.

Legacy Parks: Collier Preserve Volunteer Workday
Category: Free event and Science, nature
The almost 12-acre easement on Beaver Creek next door to the Powell Branch Library, was donated to Legacy Parks by Dr. Bob Collier in December 2016. We’ve been chipping away at the overgrowth for the last few weeks and now we are calling all volunteers to pitch in a hand to help us complete the 1st phase of the project – clean up! We need volunteers for trash pick-up, bulb transplanting and weed removal.
Once phase one is complete, we will be able to start transforming the preserve into a beautiful county park that will be maintained by Knox County Parks & Recreation and will include natural surface walking trails, a playground, restored historic structures, a kayak rest stop on Beaver Creek and more!
Join us at the workday on Saturday, May 19 from 9am-12pm. Sign up here to volunteer: info@legacyparks.org
