Join us for this educational virtual program Thursday, January 28 at 7:00 p.m. TDOT recently installed new bear crossing signs on I-40 near the North Carolina line on a section often considered a death trap for wildlife. Jeff Hunter, senior program manager with National Parks Conservation Association in Asheville, will speak on innovations to provide safe passage options for wildlife. As our world warms, wildlife populations need to expand northward. Highways are formidable barriers to this movement. Hunter facilitates the work of nearly 20 federal, state, tribal, and non-governmental organizations collaborating to make a 28-mile stretch of I-40 near the Smokies permeable for wildlife and safer for people.

Co-sponsored by the Tennessee Citizens for Wilderness Planning and the UT Arboretum Society, registration for this free online event is required. The format for this program will be Zoom. To register go to www.utarboretumsociety.org. You will be sent a link in your confirmation for program access.

Hunter’s work includes issues related to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. He also led the Tennessee Wild wilderness campaign focused on permanently protecting nearly 20,000 acres in the Cherokee National Forest, including 4.5 miles of the Appalachian Trail. The signing of the Tennessee Wilderness Act into law in December 2018 marked the completion of this project.

In accordance with the University of Tennessee guidelines for COVID-19 precautions, programs are currently being presented online. Though the UT Arboretum Society’s educational programs are not on-site activities, the UT Arboretum Society is pleased to bring the public some great online options.

The Forest Resources AgResearch and Education Center which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014, is one of ten outdoor laboratories located throughout the state as part of the UT AgResearch system. AgResearch is a division of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Institute of Agriculture also provides instruction, research and public service through the UT Herbert College of Agriculture, the UT College of Veterinary Medicine, UT AgResearch and UT Extension offices, with locations in every county in the state. "Making Humans More Humane: Henry Bergh and the Birth of Animal Rights in 19th-Century America"

Professor Freeberg discusses his new book, A Traitor to His Species Henry Bergh and the Birth of the Animal Rights Movement. The book tells the story of a remarkable man who helped to shape our modern relationship with animals. In Gilded Age America, people and animals lived cheek by jowl in environments that were dirty and dangerous to man and beast alike. The industrial city brought suffering, but it also inspired a compassion for animals that fueled a controversial anti-cruelty movement. When Henry Bergh founded the ASPCA in 1866, he launched a campaign to grant rights to animals that was applauded by many, and ridiculed by many more. Bergh fought with robber barons, Five Points gangs, and legendary impresario P.T. Barnum as Bergh came to the defense of trolley horses, livestock, stray dogs, and other animals.

The answer: always -- with our UTHC series “Conversations & Cocktails”! “Conversations & Cocktails” is a free public lecture and discussion series that showcases the original research done by our distinguished UT arts and humanities faculty. Our monthly get-togethers give you the opportunity to hear about fascinating work in the arts and in fields such as philosophy, history, and literature studies.This year our theme is “Breaking Boundaries,” featuring new, groundbreaking work in five different research fields. Presentations are 30-40 minutes long and are designed for the general public. A spirited question-and-answer discussion follows each presentation. While we usually hold our evening meetings at a restaurant in Knoxville, for the health and safety of our campus and community, we will host our spring 2021 Conversations & Cocktails lectures as webinars on Zoom.

The Photographic Conservationist – The Surprising Legacy of Jim Thompson

When it comes to Knoxville photographers, James E. (Jim) Thompson was one of the most famous and most prolific - the quantity a quality of photographs that he captured on film of places and events around the city is distinctly remarkable.

Thompson’s artistic talents and keen business sense worked together right from the outset of the 20th century. His photographs of the Smoky Mountains featured in national newspapers and publications and helped booster a movement to create a national park just beyond his hometown. More than a few of his photographs are considered iconic. Outside of photography, he worked to build trails and determine lasting place names that still inform visitors’ experiences in the Smokies today.

The Morristown Art Association is an organization dedicated to the support of visual artists and their work. Every year the MAA sponsors a Member’s Art Show that is usually displayed at the Morristown Public Library. This year, due to Covid-19, we are unable to display at the library and have decided to make our annual MAA Member’s Art Show virtual.

Snow Queen is adapted from the original famous story by Hans Christian Andersen. This is the story of Gerda, a little girl who searches for her friend Kay when she is bewitched and imprisoned by the Snow Queen in her ice palace. Gerda's innocence charms all good people and animals she meets on the way. With their help, Gerda travels to the Far North and confronts the Snow Queen in her ice palace in a struggle to save Kay’s life.
