Join Knoxville poet laureate Rhea Carmon and her collective of poets for The 5th Woman Abridged, a shortened version of their full-length show. They will use music and spoken word to tell the stories and struggles of some women in America during the pandemic. Grab a friend and join us for this energetic online event.

When the founder and executive director, Rhea “RheaSunshine” Carmon, began to express her narrative through the powerful tenet of spoken word poetry twenty years ago, she realized that there is healing to be found in the act of speaking our stories aloud. Poetry creates space for every story to be heard. The 5th Woman Poetry Collective uses poetry as a means of community, activism, and inspiration.

As always, programs are free, but you must register by midnight on Wednesday, August 4.

Join the University of Tennessee Arboretum Society for our First Thursday Nature Supper Club on Thursday, August 5, 7:00 p.m. EST as we learn how to build a roost box for a screech-owl. Eastern screech-owls are the smallest owls that live in the woods around us. Like any animal they need food, water and shelter. Since they are nocturnal, these owls look for a hollow tree or other safe place to hide and sleep year-round during the day. We will show you some of the important features needed to provide safe habitat when you build a roost box. You provide your own stay-at-home supper, and we provide the nature as local naturalist Stephen Lyn Bales will entertain and teach us via Zoom. There will be a question-and-answer session after the “how to” program. A PDF of the Screech-Owl Box plans will be sent to all those that register for the class.

The Forest Resources AgResearch and Education Center which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014, is one of ten outdoor laboratories located throughout the state as part of the UT AgResearch system. AgResearch is a division of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Institute of Agriculture also provides instruction, research and public service through the UT Herbert College of Agriculture, the UT College of Veterinary Medicine, UT AgResearch and UT Extension offices, with locations in every county in the state.

Oliver Guerguis is an 11-year-old illustrator, doodler and sketcher from Knoxville. This multi-talented, young artist is passionate about helping children with special needs, especially children with autism. You'll find his artwork in the Visitor Center lobby. Members of the Fountain City Art Guild will be exhibiting at Market Square Tomato Head through the month of August.

The mission of the Guild is to create an atmosphere that promotes, encourages, guides, supports, and informs artists in our guild. The Fountain City Art Guild began in 1979 as a group of women who met in the “Art Cellar,” the basement of Chloe Harrington’s home. Most of the Guild members were watercolor artists. For several decades, they were known as the Fountain City Watercolor Guild, and they met in various churches and homes in the community, holding exhibitions in local businesses. In 2000, the Guild voted to allow other 2-D media in their exhibits, and in 2015 members voted to allow nonfunctional 3-D work as well. In 2004, the Guild was instrumental in helping open the Fountain City Art Center at 213 Hotel Avenue, the location of the old Fountain City Library. They welcome creative, committed artists who will bring fresh ideas, energy, and enthusiasm to join the Guild.
