Knoxville Horror Film Fest
Category: Festivals, special events and Film
At Maryville's Parkway Drive-In and Knoxville's Central Cinema
Drive-in tickets are available for $25 per night per person (online or at the gate) or as part of our $120 all-access Festival Pass. Friday's drive-in experience includes the fake film trailers of our annual KHFF Grindhouse Grind-out Filmmaking Contest, a 40th anniversary screening of Stephen King & George Romero’s Creepshow (1982), and director Tom Holland’s fan favorite horror comedy Fright Night (1985). We're back at the drive-in Saturday night for a 30th anniversary presentation of Sam Raimi’s Army of Darkness (1992) before spotlighting director Stuart Gordon with a double feature of Re-Animator (1985) and From Beyond (1986).
Friday & Saturday's drive-in programming is just a fraction of the horrific fun! 80 horror diehards will join us at KHFF home base Central Cinema (just north of downtown Knoxville) for a four day marathon of specialty programming and a hand-picked slate of this year's hottest horror shorts and independents! Our 2022 festival officially kicks off Thursday night with our FULCI LIVES! mini-retrospective, saluting Italian horror legend Lucio Fulci with a triple feature of City of the Living Dead, The Devil's Honey and a surprise film in between!
In addition to KHFF’s usual load of hand-picked short films, this year’s feature competition includes KHFF 2017 Best Feature winners Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead’s Something In The Dirt; KHFF 2018 Audience Award winner Eric Pennycoff’s sophomore feature The Leech; Clay Tatum & Whitmer Thomas' The Civil Dead; and Michelle Garza Cervera’s Tribeca sensation Huesera. Out-of-competition screenings include "The Langoliers" remix oddity The Timekeepers of Eternity and the Lonanothon, a program collecting the work of Atlanta-based short filmmaker and KHFF mainstay Brian Lonano. (Additional lineup & schedule info will be announced soon.) Then our weekend at the movies wraps up Sunday night with one final repertory classic in Brian Yuzna's Society (1989), followed by our awards party!
Launched in 2009 with a single evening program of local & touring short films, the Knoxville Horror Film Fest has grown into a four-night extravaganza of exciting features and unmissable short films, including special events like live podcasts, trivia sessions and our annual Grindhouse Grind-out filmmaking competition. We’re proud to be not only East Tennessee’s longest-running film festival but also one of the Southeast’s premier annual genre film events.

Heartbreak Express
by: George Lam & John Clum
October 20-22, 7:30 PM
Venue: Flying Anvil Theatre
Directed by: Marya Barry
Synopsis: Inspired partly by Tai Uhlmann’s documentary film “For the Love of Dolly,” the opera follows four Dolly Parton superfans waiting to meet their idol for the first time. Sisters Darlene and Luanne entered an essay contest and won the chance to meet Dolly Parton in person. Darlene thinks this encounter with Dolly will improve their lives, but Luanne is not so sure. Longtime partners Don and Travis have amassed an enormous collection of Dolly memorabilia. They poured their life savings into making a new Dolly doll and came to get Dolly’s blessing to manufacture the new dolls. The opera follows the four fans as they meet in the waiting room and ends in a quintet (with Dolly’s mysterious Assistant) as they describe their life-changing encounters with the superstar.

Adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher, from the novella Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
Directed by Tom Eubanks
A new and shocking version of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale of depravity, lust, love and horror. On the fog-bound streets of Victorian-era London, Henry Jekyll’s experiments with exotic “powders and tinctures” have brought forth his other self—Edward Hyde, a sensualist and villain free to commit the sins Jekyll is too civilized to comprehend. When Hyde meets a woman who stirs his interest, Jekyll fears for her life and decides to end his experiments. But Hyde has other ideas, and so the two sides battle each other in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse to determine who shall be the master and who his slave. With multiple Hydes portrayed by members of the cast.
