Spiritus Knox: Breathing Under the Oak Tree

  • November 9, 2022

Category: Free event, Health, wellness and Science, nature

Meet under the Pavilion in Lakeshore Park (the structure with a roof and no sides, it sits close to Marble Hall and the newer playground). There will be signs to help guide you.

second Wednesday of the month

If you live in Knoxville or happen to be visiting the area, we'd love to breathe together under an old oak tree in Lakeshore Park. Engaging our breath in healthy ways can not only benefit our physical health, it can also help us attune to the Holy Spirit (the breath of God) as well as better connect to our own heart, body, soul and spirit. Breathing together in community can be a delightful gift of finding ease in our lives with others who are trying to do the same. So bring a camp chair, blanket &/or meditation cushion. We so look forward to breathing together under the oak tree.

Please email if you have any questions: caroline@knoxvilleascension.org
This is a free event and all are welcome. Registration is encouraged.

UT Humanities Center Public Books Circle: How to Do Nothing with Lisi Schoenbach

  • November 9, 2022

Category: Free event, Health, wellness, Lecture, panel and Virtual

Nov. 9 @ 7 PM via Zoom. Register at https://tiny.utk.edu/PBC_Schoenbach2022

Join Lisi Schoenbach, associate professor of English at UT, on November 9 for a lively online conversation about Jenny Odell's book, How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy, hosted by the UT Humanities Center. Buy a copy of the book or check it out from the library. Read, enjoy, and then join the book discussion online to hear an expert in the field talk about the major ideas of a text that you have read!

About the Book:
In a world where addictive technology is designed to buy and sell our attention, and our value is determined by our 24/7 data productivity, it can seem impossible to escape. But in this inspiring field guide to dropping out of the attention economy, artist and critic Jenny Odell shows us how we can still win back our lives. Odell sees our attention as the most precious—and overdrawn—resource we have. And we must actively and continuously choose how we use it. We might not spend it on things that capitalism has deemed important … but once we can start paying a new kind of attention, she writes, we can undertake bolder forms of political action, reimagine humankind’s role in the environment, and arrive at more meaningful understandings of happiness and progress. Far from the simple anti-technology screed, or the back-to-nature meditation we read so often, How to do Nothing is an action plan for thinking outside of capitalist narratives of efficiency and techno-determinism. Provocative, timely, and utterly persuasive, this book will change how you see your place in our world.

About the Speaker:
Lisi Schoenbach is an associate professor of English at UT. She works on twentieth-century literature and philosophy, with a particular focus on modernism, pragmatism, and political theory. She is the author of Pragmatic Modernism (Oxford, 2012) and is currently at work on a new book project entitled Modernism and the Democratic State. She teaches courses in modernism, the modern novel, and literary theory. In recent years she has served as Faculty Fellow for Curriculum in the University of Tennessee Chancellor’s Honors Program. She has been the recipient of a College of Arts and Sciences Junior Faculty Teaching Award and the Department of English Hodges Award for Teaching Excellence.

This event is part of the UT Humanities Center’s Public Books Circle series. More information about this year’s series is available at humanitiescenter.utk.edu/public/reading.

She performed in several bands – The Delta Flyers, The Jordan Project, Mojo, and The Leftovers, with whom she performed memorably at the 2000 International Blues Challenge in Memphis. She was also the creative force behind the concert, “Ladies Sing the Blues” at The Bijou Theatre in 1999 and the original “Blue Jam” at Sassy Ann’s, which spawned numerous Blues Bands around East Tennessee. This is always a fantastic night of music, merriment, fellowship, and love.

Dennis Sabo, Photography
Autumn in Tennessee
“As long as autumn lasts, I shall not have hands, canvas, and colors enough to paint the beautiful things I see.” -Vincent van Gogh
“Autumn foliage, streams, and forest scenes are a magical time for nature, a seasonal fairytale experience of color, light, textures, and patterns.” - Dennis Sabo
Dennis Sabo is an internationally award winning photographer specializing in contemporary fine art abstract, landscape, and seascape photography. His painterly and emotionally charged photographs are reminiscent of the best works of art by the legendary Impressionists while capturing light and its effect on the landscape with a contemporary vibrancy and energy. Most of his nature imagery is a microcosm of a subject so that collectors can relate to the artwork regardless if they are from Tennessee or elsewhere. Dennis's fine art has been included in solo and group gallery exhibitions, commercial installations and private home collections throughout the United States and internationally, and also in books, magazines, and in multimedia worldwide including NOVA, PBS, Canon U.S.A., Inc., Portfolio Magazine Florida, and Blue Planet.
