Calendar of Events

Guests attending the Tea are highly encouraged to wear fanciful and artful hats for the “Best Hat” competition. Tables will be set with china, tea pots, and roses. A “Best Table” competition will also be held for those who decorate their own tables. LeGrand Music Studio will provide a guitarist for musical entertainment. A small Live Auction will be held during the Tea. Men, women, and youth, ages 8 and up, are encouraged to attend. We can accommodate up to 60 guests. Tickets are $25 per guest, to be paid in advance.

Golden Dragon AcrobatsThe Golden Dragon Acrobats represent the best of a time honored tradition that began more than twenty-five centuries ago. The Golden Dragons are recognized throughout the United States and abroad as the premiere Chinese acrobatic touring company of today.

The company hails from both Hebei and Henan province, in the People’s Republic of China, and has toured the United States continuously since 1978. Its 29 members are athletes, actors and artists who have studied and trained for their craft since early childhood. The group has performed in all 50 states and in over 65 countries across the world. The Golden Dragons had their Broadway debut at the New Victory Theater in 2005, and were nominated for two most prestigious Drama Desk Awards for their performance.

Tennessee Children’s Dance Ensemble to hold auditions

The Tennessee Children’s Dance Ensemble will hold open auditions for new members at 2:00 p.m. on Sat., July 25th, at Dancers Studio, 4216 Sutherland Ave., Knoxville. Members are chosen by an independent panel of judges without regard to race, color or creed.

Any Tennessee resident between 8-14 years of age is eligible to try out at this very basic audition. Each participant needs to prepare an original one-minute dance composition without music demonstrating modern dance and ballet technique.

The Sundress Academy for the Arts is proud to present this workshop taught by visiting writer, Sam Slaughter. There’s no doubt about the connection between alcohol and literature. Any number of books and studies (The Trip to Echo Spring, for example) discuss these connections. This workshop will begin a dialogue with participants in a two-fold manner. First, they will use texts from famous authors (Ernest Hemingway, Dorothy Parker, among others) to examine how they write about and discuss alcohol in the context of fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. Participants will then use this knowledge and apply it to in-class writing on similar topics. Each hour will culminate with the construction of a classic literary cocktail, which will then fuel the writing for the next hour. This workshop runs from 4:00 to 7:00PM, and the ticket price of $45 includes instruction, booze, as well as a dinner served post-workshop. Sam Slaughter is the spirits writer for The Manual and also the author of When You Cross That Line, God in Neon (Fall 2015), and Dogs (January 2016). His work has appeared in a variety of other places including McSweeney's Internet Tendency and Midwestern Gothic. He's worked as a winery intern, craft bartender, and helped start a brewery among other service industry jobs. He once drank whiskey out of a muskrat skull. He believes firmly that Bloody Marys should be consumed on Sundays, and he frequently brings his own mini bottles of bourbon on flights. Sundress Academy for the Arts is proud to present this very special SAFTA Reading Series event featuring three former SAFTA staff members who will be leaving Knoxville to pursue their Master's in Creative Writing in Alaska, Mississippi, and Ohio! Join us in celebrating the works of Chris Petruccelli, Stephanie Phillips, and Luke Marinac for One Last Night in Knoxville!

Chris Petruccelli is the author of the chapbook Action at a Distance, available at etchingspress.org. His poetry has appeared in Blast Furnace, Connotation Press, Gingerbread House, Rappahannock Review, and elsewhere. In his free time, Chris likes to drink whisky and smoke cigarettes with older women. Stephanie Lee Phillips is a writer, photographer, and graduate student who can’t seem to stop being a barista in Knoxville, Tennessee. In the two years since graduating from UT, she has worked with Sundress Academy for the Arts and swiftly avoided questions about her future from her parent’s friends. She is pleased to finally get to say that she will be studying fiction at the University of Southern Mississippi this fall where she will finally try crawfish. Luke Marinac studies and works at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. His poetry has appeared in Polaris, The Siren, Unlikely 2.0, and North Central Review. He believes bike repair belongs in the living room, and enjoys the gamboling through the wild countryside of the Smokey Mountains.
