Clayton Center for the Arts: Community Theatre Festival

With performances by Athens Area Arts Council, Foothills Community Players, Theatre Knoxville Downtown, The Theatre Guild of Morristown and the Clayton Center for the Arts, the Festival will kick off at 5:00 PM August 5 with music and BBQ on the Plaza and performances in the Ronald and Lynda Nutt Theatre at 7:00 PM and the Haslam Family Flex Theatre at 9:00 PM.

There are many performers in the area who have, or could work professionally and chose to live in this area. The festival is homage to community theatre; the unsung hero of theatre artists and lovers in all times and places. At any community theatre performance you may see someone who has been on television, in movies or even on Broadway. All area community theatre groups are invited to the Festival and to have a booth for awareness or season ticket sales during the festival. The Tennessee Theatre Association will provide support by participating in a round table discussion for Community Theatres, promoting the Festival and offering information to participants.

The performances are: “Annie” with music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin, and the book by Thomas Meehan presented by Athens Area Council for the Arts; “Almost Maine” by John Cariani presented by Theatre Knoxville Downtown; “The Fantasticks” with music by Harvey Schmidt and lyrics by Tom Jones, presented by Theatre Guild of Morristown; Broadway: A Life presented by Foothills Community Players; “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” presented by Clayton Center for the Arts.

Smoky Mountain Blues Society: Riverboat Cruises

The Smoky Mountain Blues Society has announced the 2012 line up for the Star of Knoxville Riverboat Blues Cruise Series. Mark your calendar now for the best entertainment value anywhere around. The Summer line-up is:

August 5th-Sunset Cruise with Jenna and Her Cool Friends.
September 9th-Blue Mother Tupelo
October 7th-VooDoo Bone
October 28th-Fall Colors Cruise –Slow Blind Hill

Except for the two sunset cruises, loading starts at 2, boat sails from 3-6. The Sunset cruises begin loading at 5 and boats sail from 6-9. Tickets are $13 in advance and $18 day of cruise. Traveling by paddle boat on the river, while listening to a style of music with roots almost as old as the river, promises a nostalgic escape. Food and drinks are available on the boat.

Sequoyah Birthplace Museum: Sequoyah Remembrance Day

On Sunday, August 5, 2012 Sequoyah Birthplace Museum in Vonore, TN will be celebrating Sequoyah Remembrance Day and Sequoyah’s contribution to the Cherokee people, the Cherokee Syllabary writing system, with free admission to the museum from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Allen Fugate will be demonstrating silversmithing and Cherokee enrolled member Dawn Arneach will answering questions and guidance on researching your Cherokee ancestry. The 1809 Cherokee Blacksmith shop will be up and running with demonstrations all day.

Theatre Knoxville Downtown: Tuna Does Vegas

Tuna Does Vegas re-unites the lovable and eccentric characters from the "third smallest town in Texas" as they take a rambling romp in Sin City. The hilarity begins when oddball-conservative radio host Arles Struvie announces on air that he and his wife Bertha Bumiller are heading to Vegas to renew their wedding vows ... but everyone in Tuna, Texas goes along for the ride! Written by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears and Ed Howard, Tuna Does Vegas features the favorite characters from the award-winningGreater Tuna productions with some new characters too!

Performances are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8:00 PM and Sunday at 3:00 PM. Tickets are $10 plus fees for Thursday & Sunday performances and $15 plus fees for Friday & Saturday performances. August 1-September 2, Art Market Galley of Knoxville is pleased to present an exhibit of recent works by Patricia Herzog of Knoxville and Francie Entz of Loudon.

Patricia Herzog, who holds a MS degree in ceramics from UT, will be exhibiting a collection of her recent clay works, some of which include fused-glass elements. She enjoys experimenting with colorful glazes and textures with an emphasis on whimsical animal imagery and the natural environment. Patricia is a member of several regional craft guilds and has been a studio potter since 1978.

Painter Francie Entz will be exhibiting a collection of her recent works in water media. She says that for her “the process of painting--the journey--is the important thing.” Francie aspires to create work that intrigues, captivates, puzzles and that also pleases both herself and the viewer. Member of both the Knoxville and Tennessee Watercolor Societies, her works have been juried into exhibits throughout the US.

A First Friday Reception for the exhibit is planned for August 3 from 5:30-9 pm with complimentary refreshments and live folk-style music performed by Molly Rochelson.

Join us for this terrific new program at Ijams Nature Center! Look for the Nature Fun Station sign to find a fun outdoor learning activity. 6 pm FAMILY PROGRAM: Evening Canoe Cruise: Search for jellyfish!
Enjoy the evening summer breezes as you cruise around the lake at Mead's Quarry. This fun and relaxed outing includes an enjoyable tour of the lake with Ijams' naturalist Stephen Lyn Bales as he searches for freshwater jellyfish. Plus there will be a boxed dinner that we'll enjoy lakeside. The fee for this program and meal are $25 for members and $30 for non-members. 10:30 am FAMILY PROGRAM: Turtles and Snakes are Great!
(Ages 5 and up) Join naturalist Kara Remington at Smart Toys & Books for a presentation on reptiles. International Fine Arts Academy: West African Dance & Aerobic Class

Tennessee Stage Company: Shakespeare on the Square

An entertaining evening of the various writings of the Bard, presented during the summer in Market Square. An old blanket or lawn chair is all you need to view the free performances under the stars. Donations of $5 are always welcome. Performed on a rough replica of the new Globe Theatre in London (a reconstruction of Shakespeare’s original theatre), the plays will be presented in the timeless style of Elizabethan Theatre presentations. The Tennessee Stage Company encourages the audience to spend an evening on the Square: do a little shopping, have a nice dinner, see the play and maybe stop by a pub afterward. All of this and more is available on Market Square nightly. So come early and see the Square!
