(Ages 2-3) Is the heat making you blue? Then join us as we explore the world of blue color around us. We might look at blue water or do a blue craft... whatever it takes to shake off those end-of-summer blues! The fee for this program is $5 for members and $15 for non-members. Join us for this terrific new program at Ijams Nature Center! Look for the Nature Fun Station sign to find a fun outdoor learning activity. Whether, we are catching bugs in the meadow or planting flowers in the garden, visitors can join us for a variety of outdoor discoveries. Follow the sign to fun! FREE. No registration required.

8 am FAMILY PROGRAM: Kid's First Canoe Cruise
If your kids are already complaining about going back to school, we have a way to hold on to a piece of summer. Bring them to the park for a fun, family canoe trip. The relaxed paddling on our lake is perfect for kids that have never canoed before, as well as families that want a relaxing way to explore the quarry. Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a paying adult. And maybe we will even find freshwater jellyfish that live in Mead's Quarry Lake. (Ages 12 and up) If you are looking for a way to make summer last just a little bit longer, then this program is for you. Whether it's the color of summer wildflowers or those last vegetables from your garden, we'll discuss ways to keep the warm weather with you into fall. We'll talk about drying plants and flowers, and even some ways to store your garden harvest. The fee for this program is $5 for members and $8 for non-members. September 15, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Internet Genealogy--Students use individual computers to explore the 12 major sites. Pre-registration begins September 3.

October 13, 11 a.m. - 12 noon. War of 1812 Genealogy--Find service, bounty land, pension, regimental information for your War of 1812 ancestor. Pre-registration begins October 1.

October 27, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Using County Records in Genealogical Research--Finding birth, death, court,deeds, divorces, probate, tax, wills to investigate your ancestors. No registration required.

November 10, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Internet genealogy--Students use individual computers to explore 12 major sites. Pre-registration begins October 29.

December 8, 1:15 - 4:15 p.m. Intermediate Internet Genealogy--Advanced techniques in genealogical research with special focus on primary resources. Pre-registration begins November 26.

Tuna Does Vegas re-unites the lovable and eccentric characters from the "third smallest town in Texas" as they take a rambling romp in Sin City. The hilarity begins when oddball-conservative radio host Arles Struvie announces on air that he and his wife Bertha Bumiller are heading to Vegas to renew their wedding vows ... but everyone in Tuna, Texas goes along for the ride! Written by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears and Ed Howard, Tuna Does Vegas features the favorite characters from the award-winningGreater Tuna productions with some new characters too!

Performances are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8:00 PM and Sunday at 3:00 PM. Tickets are $10 plus fees for Thursday & Sunday performances and $15 plus fees for Friday & Saturday performances. The UT Downtown Gallery is excited to present an upcoming exhibition from the Permanent Collection of the Ewing Gallery of Art and Architecture. August’s exhibition will feature figurative works on paper, including watercolors, drawings, photography, and printmaking. Notable works include: portraits by Chuck Close and Alice Neel, prints by Francisco Goya, Leon Golub, Kathe Kollwitz, Keith Haring, Luis Jiminez, and William Hogarth, and photography by Helmut Newton and Walker Evans. Also in the exhibition will be works from the UT School of Art professors, students, and visiting artists, past and present. These artists are, Baldwin Lee, Don Kurka, F. Clark Stewart, Ruth Weisberg, Eleanor Dickinson, Mark Steinmetz, Ruth Weisberg and Joseph Delaney.

Works will be on display August 3 - August 18, 2012, Wednesday through Friday 11am - 6pm and Saturdays 10am -3pm.

August 1-September 2, Art Market Galley of Knoxville is pleased to present an exhibit of recent works by Patricia Herzog of Knoxville and Francie Entz of Loudon.

Patricia Herzog, who holds a MS degree in ceramics from UT, will be exhibiting a collection of her recent clay works, some of which include fused-glass elements. She enjoys experimenting with colorful glazes and textures with an emphasis on whimsical animal imagery and the natural environment. Patricia is a member of several regional craft guilds and has been a studio potter since 1978.

Painter Francie Entz will be exhibiting a collection of her recent works in water media. She says that for her “the process of painting--the journey--is the important thing.” Francie aspires to create work that intrigues, captivates, puzzles and that also pleases both herself and the viewer. Member of both the Knoxville and Tennessee Watercolor Societies, her works have been juried into exhibits throughout the US.

A First Friday Reception for the exhibit is planned for August 3 from 5:30-9 pm with complimentary refreshments and live folk-style music performed by Molly Rochelson.

African Dance class will consist of African dances styles, techniques, songs, and culture. Classes are designed to educate, motivate, and inspire you about the positive awareness of African Cultural Dance as a Whole. Class will consist of a mild warm-up of stretching, cardiovascular endurance, and developing footwork/body mechanics.
