Calendar of Events

Community leaders, musicians, and volunteers are joining together to help listener supported radio station WDVX raise funds. The Fall Fund Drive celebrates the 17 years of presenting live music and specialty radio programs representing a variety of music genres.

Features live performances nearly every day and welcomes in-person donations from the community at these shows. The Blue Plate Special, WDVX's Monday - Friday free mid-day show, is scheduled to have performances by:

On Friday night, October 3, First Friday Live on the Knoxville Visitor Center Stage feature live music by David Mayfield. Adam Levy will perform on Monday, October 6 at 7:00 pm for the station's Tennessee Shines Radio Show. On Saturday, Nov. 1, Caroline Rose, Caleb Klauder Country Band and other artists anchor a day long party at the WDVX studio inside the Knoxville Visitor Center where donors may pay their pledge, pick up a thank you gift, and enjoy music and other surprises.

Some very important lessons in life aren't covered in school. Knox County Public Library is pleased to offer programs for teens this fall. Life 101 is a short series focusing on sharing knowledge on important issues for teens and their families. The free workshops will be held on Saturdays at 2:00 at Lawson McGhee Library, 500 W. Church Ave.

September 27 and again on October 18- Nutrition Basics for Teens.
Shannon Reynolds from the University of Tennessee Medical Center's "Healthy Living Kitchen" program will be talking about the importance of establishing healthy eating habits and showing teens how to make a quick and healthy snack.

The Knoxville Museum of Art presents the Latino Art Exhibit in the Corridor Gallery. The select works of nine local Hispanic artists will be featured including works from June Crowe, Susana Esrequis, Astrid Galindo, Angel Luna, Cecilia Stella Martin, Rosalina Tipton, Irene Torrealba, Loren Velazquez, and Luis Velazquez. The exhibit captures the diversity in styles of Hispanic artists residing in East Tennessee and of those who support the mission of LoLa Hora Latina.

Notes about three of the artists in the show:
Rosalina Tipton always tries to express beauty and spontaneity in her work even though her style borders on the abstract. She aims to have a connection with the real world and her personal life experiences. She primarily uses oils, mixed media on canvas, and wood and was influenced by the culture of her native Brazil.
Irene Torrealba, who was born and raised in Santiago, Chile, displays special interests in realism in water color and oil. She especially enjoys painting country landscapes that connect with her memories of her childhood, family, and travels.
For Susana Esrequis, painting is a time when her imagination and feelings come together and when she finds peace in genuine and simple things. Her works often depict pristine landscapes from both South America and North America.

Sam Venable, author, columnist, humorist, and naturalist will highlight points of interest in the GSM National Park. The 3 1/2 - 4 hour tour is $50 per person and will depart from the GSM Heritage Center at 9:30 am on the following Saturdays: May 10, August 23, September 20, October 18.

Drawing on the collections of the McClung Museum, the University of Tennessee Library’s Special Collections, as well as private collections, this exhibit explores the fascinating intersection of art and science in the tradition of natural history illustration and features over fifty rare books, prints, and objects.

From 16th century imaginings of fantastical beasts, to the extremely accurate 19th illustrations of plants and animals, the works on view highlight how increasing access to travel, technology, and books, as well as the evolution of the field of science, changed how these artful illustrations were created and interpreted. Alan Moore will be on view at the downtown Knoxville Tomato Head Restaurant from September 8th thru October 4th. He will then exhibit at the West Knoxville Gallery Tomato Head from October 7th thru November 3rd.

The Moores have recently embarked on their most ambitious exhibit schedule to date. Over 100 pieces of the Moore’s southern-fried folk art will be on display in three states over the next five months. Alan and his daughters Isabella (age 13) and Emma (age 11) have been creating their iconic bottle cap fish for their junk art tour they call “Catch!” – inspired by their two home states of Florida and Colorado. Recently the Moore’s went “paintless” in their folk art bringing all the color to their work through the medium of vintage soda/beer cans and bottle caps. The Moore’s new palette includes over 4000 soda and beer cans to choose from, all dating back to the 1960s and 1970s. Their studio also boasts of having over 60,000 neatly organized bottle caps-vintage and modern, domestic and international. It is not rare for Alan or one of the girls to make a fish with caps and cans from Germany, Russia, Canada, Thailand, S. Korea, the US and several other countries.

It is our immense pleasure to invite the community to the next First Friday Art Opening at the Blount Mansion Visitors Center. We are privileged to have acquired many wonderful pieces over the years, and now we are going to display them for our visitors. This exhibit will showcase some of the best art that the Blount Mansion Association has collected since 1926. These prints and portraits help to make the house truly an amazing experience and help to tell the story of Knoxville, Tennessee, and the United States. The show will include portraits of some of our most famous Tennesseans, such as Territorial Governor William Blount and his half-brother, Tennessee Governor Willie Blount, as well as Charles McClung and John Sevier. Visitors will also see great historical figures such as George Washington, Henry Knox, and Louis Philippe, King of France. Knoxville’s prominent citizens are featured here as well, with portraits of Charles McClung and Mary Boyce Temple. There is also a set of three John Catesby prints and other decorative pieces that will showcase the breadth of the collection here at the Governor’s House.

As part of the First Friday, the opening reception will be from 5:00 to 7:00 on Friday September 5th here at the Blount Mansion Visitors Center at 200 West Hill Avenue in Knoxville. There will be beverages and light refreshments available. This is a free event and all are welcome. Please come and enjoy the event and have fun!

The Omega Gallery at Carson-Newman University presents re[creation], a solo exhibit by 1995 Art major alum Jan Bridwell Walker, who is now an Instructor of Art at Anderson University in South Carolina.

The Exhibition in the main gallery is free and open to the public and includes 38 figurative sculptural works from Presenting and Invited Artists of the Figurative Association: The Human Form symposium, from September 10-13. This year, events get under way with the inaugural art exhibit at the Blount County Campus: “Quantum Confusion,” featuring the mind-bending artwork of Denise Stewart-Sanabria. The show runs Aug. 18-Oct. 18. The art will be on display in the lobby of the campus, 2731 W. Lamar Alexander Pkwy., during normal business hours, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. each weekday.

The exhibit will feature installations of large charcoal drawings on plywood that suggest the presence of portals, using existing walls and building spaces. Visitors and students will walk through the installation when they visit the Blount County Campus.
