Tennessee Mountain Writers: Writing to Heal
Category: Classes, workshops and Literature, spoken word, writing
The artist Georges Braque wrote, Art is a wound turned into light, and the poet Mark Doty asked, What is healing but a shift in perspective? In this one-day workshop, we'll explore a specific set of writing exercises you can use to expand your capacity for helaing or simply to deepen your writing practice. Several of the techniques come from a course in Expressive Writing taught at the Duke University Center for Integrative Medicine; others are ones I've developed over thirty years of teaching fiction and memoir. Put together, the exercises allow us to experience both memory and the present moment in new ways and to discover how we can use shifts in point-of-view to transform our lives. There will be lots of in-class writing, so please bring pens or pencils and plenty of paper. Everyone is welcome--this is a class for wirters and non-writers alike.
Registration Fees: $85. Coffee, tea, soft drinks, and snacks before the morning session are included.
Abigail DeWitt is the author of the novels, LILI (WW Norton) and DOGS (Lorimer Press), and a just-finished collection of stories, THE SEX APPEAL OF THE FRENCH. Her short fiction has appeared or is forthcoming in Five Points, Witness, the Alaska Quarterly Review, the Carolina Quarterly, and elsewhere. She has been cited in BEST AMERICAN SHORT STORIES, nominated for a Pushcart, and has received grants and fellowships from the North Carolina Arts Council, the Tyrone Guthrie Center, the McColl Center for the ARts, and the Michener Society.
Location: Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN.

Knoxville Walking Tours – Gunslingers
Category: History, heritage and Lecture, panel
When Knoxville Was the Wild West – Knoxville’s history is colorful and the predominant hue is blood red. Take a walk on the wild side, from the Old City to Gay Street, down to the river and beyond. The now peaceful streets were once the scene of violence and mayhem of all descriptions—family feuds, duels, lynchings, and riots. Telling all the stories might take years, so this tour varies its route and local author, Laura Still is always finding fresh tales to share.
Tour lasts approx. 90 minutes and will meet in the Knoxville Visitors Center. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children 6-12 (Group Rates Available). Visit http://knoxvillewalkingtours.com/gunslingers-html/ or call 865-309-4522 to book your tour now!
A portion of the proceeds will go towards funding the Knoxville History Project, the city’s only historical organization solely devoted to researching and promoting the history of Knoxville. Learn more at www.knoxvillehistoryproject.org

Stephen Fulbright ‘s tales of a boy growing up in East Tennessee would make Mark Twain proud. Learning chemistry via snow bombs, physics with tater guns, he became a well known engineer, working for truth, justice and the American way.
