Knoxville Walking Tours – Shadow Side 2 Ghost Tour

  • October 21, 2017 — October 31, 2017
  • 7:30-9 PM

Category: History, heritage and Lecture, panel

At Downtown Grind Coffee Shop

October 21, 27, & 31 at 7:30-9 PM

Old City Ghosts – The lively entertainment section now known as the Old City wasn’t always so friendly. The neighborhood has a history of dark times and dark deeds, and the remnants aren’t just in the architecture. Formerly known as the Bowery, the district was home to saloons, dance halls, pool rooms, and bars, where famous gunmen, thieves, ladies of the evening, and troublemakers of all kinds bumped elbows with naïve travelers and honest working folk. Life here was violent—and often short.

Tour lasts approx. 90 minutes and will meet in front of Downtown Grind Coffee Shop. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children 6-12 (Group Rates Available). Visit http://knoxvillewalkingtours.com/gunslingers-html/ or call 865-309-4522 to book your tour now!

A portion of the proceeds will go towards funding the Knoxville History Project, the city’s only historical organization solely devoted to researching and promoting the history of Knoxville. Learn more at www.knoxvillehistoryproject.org

Autoharp

From his rather unglamorous beginning as a street singer, Bryan Bowers has become a major artist on the traditional music circuit. He has redefined the autoharp and is also well known as a singer-songwriter. Born in Yorktown, Virginia, Bryan Bowers was raised in New Bohemia near Petersburg of the Civil War’s Battle Of The Crater fame. As a child, Bowers would tag along with the field workers and gandy dancers and learned to sing old call-and-answer songs. He took up music seriously in the 1960s learning guitar and later autoharp after relocating to Seattle. In 1993, Bryan was the first living member inducted into the Autoharp Hall of Fame to stand only with Maybelle Carter, Kilby Snow, and Sara Carter. His critically acclaimed recordings include The View From Home, Home, Home On the Road, By Heart, Friend For Life, For You and Bristlecone Pine.

At Knoxville Visitor Center

Knoxville’s story has always been set to music, from the time when the poetic rhythms of the native Cherokee tribes still echoed in the hills and the ballads of the Scots-Irish settlers were sung around campfires on the riverbanks. Immigrants from all over the world brought new instruments and tunes to enliven the song and East Tennessee became known as a home to musicians of every genre, whether classical, jazz, R&B, rock-n-roll, Americana, or the avant-garde sounds of ska, techno, and whatever’s unveiled at this year’s Big Ears Festival.

Tour lasts approx. 90 minutes and we will meet in the Knoxville Visitor Center.
