Clarence Brown Theatre: Blue Window

Category: Theatre

By: Craig Lucas

A long running Off-Broadway hit by the playwright of Reckless and God's Heart.

A portrait of loneliness in one of the world's most densely populated cities. Libby, for her own private reasons, has invited six disparate friends to her apartment in New York for dinner and drinks. As their conversations drift, they begin to open up to one another...but how do you really know anyone?

Clayton Center for the Arts: Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers

Category: Film

The Clayton Center for the Arts is one of 8 venues in the Southeast to screen 6 films as part of the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers. One film will be shown per month in the Lambert Recital Hall. Screenings will be free for High School and College students with a student ID, and admission for the general public $5. All films will be shown at 7pm followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker.

“Through the Southern Circuit, we are reshaping the relationship between films, filmmakers, and audiences,” said Teresa Hollingsworth, senior program director with South Arts. “Our Screening Partners are developing thriving audiences who support independent films, and filmmakers have the opportunity to interact with audiences in each community at receptions, Q&As, and workshops. The Southern Circuit is about creating a deeper, more conversational approach to film. Instead of catching a documentary in your living room, audiences get to meet the filmmaker and discuss the creative process." In total, there will be 21 Screening Partners, 18 filmmakers and a total of 124 screenings spanning nine states.

Films to be screened at the Clayton Center are:
• October 25, 2017: Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four with filmmaker Deborah Esquenazi
• November 08, 2017: Jackson with filmmaker Maisie Crow
• February 14, 2018: Liyana with filmmakers Amanda Kopp & Aaron Kopp

The Public Cinema: Kékszakállú

  • October 25, 2017
  • 2 PM

Category: Film and Free event

Directed by Gastón Solnicki
Wednesday, October 25 · The Pilot Light · 7:00 p.m.

The beguiling third feature from Gastón Solnicki takes inspiration from Béla Bartók’s opera Bluebeard’s Castle for this tale about several young women attempting to make their way into adulthood.

"A gentle reminder that cinema itself is young and full of possibilities." -- Sight & Sound

"One of the best films of 2016." -- Artforum

"Despite some operatic flourishes, the overall feel of Kékszakállú is inviting and approachable, a pleasantly intuitive trip through changing times. It takes an uncommon talent to keep the mundane from seeming inert, and through Solnicki’s lens, the absence of outer conflict doesn’t mute the turmoil within. His subjects are not satisfied with the world they’re leaving and the one they’re growing into, and his film animates their dilemma like few others can." -- Variety

The Sheena McCall Young People’s Concerts’ theme this year is “Uncle Sam’s Symphony,” which compares the way the United States government is structured to that of an orchestra (Executive Branch/President = Conductor; Vice President = Concertmaster; Legislative Branch = Families of Instruments).

KSO Music Director Aram Demirjian conducts the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra in an educational and engaging program designed for students in 3rd through 5th grades, using visual elements such as video projections, props, lights, and costumes to stimulate the students' interest and plant the seeds for further musical involvement.

O'Brien Art Gallery: INEXTERIORS - Paintings by Marcia Santore

  • October 16, 2017 — November 30, 2017

Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event

Opening Reception: Thursday, November 2, 2-5 pm

Inexteriors is a series of paintings by artist Marcia Santore that address ideas of impossible architectural spaces. The series has developed over a number of years and has been inspired by visions of windows through doorways through windows, the patterns of light in interior spaces created by seen or unseen openings, indeterminate interior and exterior spaces, unknown houses seen from within and without, mysterious stairways and hallways and hidden rooms, figures that inhabit (haunt?) those spaces, and the potential for these spaces to tell or conceal multiple, unfolding stories. Some of these paintings are in oil and others in acrylic. Some include collaged elements such as recycled paper.

“As someone who has moved many times, both as a child and as an adult, houses have multiple meanings for me—they are places full of mystery and possibility, suggestive of many potential futures or outcomes.”
—Marcia Santore

A portion of the proceeds of sales from this exhibition will be donated to the Oak Ridge Art Center. www.marciasantore.com
