Bijou Theatre: Sam Bush
Category: Music
Sam Bush at The Bijou, Thursday October 5 at 8:00PM.
If joy were a person, he’d bring both peace and frenzy. He’d be full of music, light, and energy that soothes even as it stirs us up. Eyes closed, wire-rim glasses in place, mandolin pressed against his ribs, joy would be Sam Bush on a stage.
That rapt merging of life and art fills Bush’s new album Storyman, a freewheeling collection that gleefully picks and chooses from jazz, folk, blues, reggae, country swing, and bluegrass to create a jubilant noise only classifiable as the Sam Bush sound. Many of the songs are stories’’several of them true’’and the legendary mandolin player co-wrote every one of them with friends including Guy Clark, Emmylou Harris, Jon Randall Stewart, Jeff Black, and others.
The Father of Newgrass and King of Telluride has long since established himself as roots royalty, revered for both his solo and sideman work, which includes time with Harris, Lyle Lovett, and Bela Fleck. But instead of kicking back and soaking up honors such as an Americana Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award and suite of Grammys and International Bluegrass Music Association trophies, Bush still strives relentlessly to create something new.
For Bush, a lifetime of channeling his energy has led to stylistic innovations that have changed the course of bluegrass and roots music alike.

Knoxville Writers' Guild: What Writers Must Know About Libel, Slander, and Copyright
Category: Classes, workshops and Literature, spoken word, writing
Every writer needs a basic knowledge of libel, slander and copyright law. Come to the Thursday, Oct. 5, program of the Knoxville Writers’ Guild to begin yours. Mark P. Crockett, an attorney with the intellectual property firm of Luedecka Neely, will speak at 7 p.m. on "What Writers Must Know About Libel, Slander, and Copyright."
This informal but expert presentation will be at 7 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of Central United Methodist Church, 201 East Third Street. Admission is a suggested donation of $2. Plentiful, free parking is available in lots to the back and side of the church, which is wheelchair accessible. Along with cookies and coffee, you’ll find KWG hospitality and community support.
Crockett will cover such questions as: If you write memoirs, how can libel laws affect you? When and how can you safely incorporate another person’s work in your own? How do you protect your own work? If you are reading your work aloud, what laws apply?
Crockett is a cum laude graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Law. Please note that while he will give an overview of writers’ legal rights and responsibilities, he will not address individual cases or give legal advice. He will tell audience members how to protect themselves and when to get professional help. Participants will learn how to save themselves a lot of trouble and protect their creative work. This program is essential for anybody serious about writing!
The Knoxville Writers Guild welcomes your participation! Membership is $30 and $15 for students. Visit www.knoxvillewritersguild.org.
